Is there no light at the end of the tunnel?

Is the tunnel just a tunnel forever?

Players often get sponsored at the top levels, in fact if you go to a tournament and are unknown but do well you will get offered a sponsorship deal for your broadcasted tables, I think. I just noticed it since some players start in T shirts and end in full Poker Stars regalia.

btw have you though about how to get ur money?

They keep playing to try an win their money back is one guess. The other is they see people on TV winning $200,000+ in a couple days at a tournament and think, "Hell, that looks easy I can do that too!"

At the pro level, they win with bluffs and luck. They're all capable of making the calculations for probability for the various draws available to them, but still... imo it's bluffs and luck.

"dumb people" that are bad at poker throw money at poker because it's fun and they really enjoy it.

That or they're addicted

I'm amazed the bubble hasn't burst yet. Poker still appears to be a viable career path!

edit: oh btw the title was a little over-general I think :-/

A lot of young and upcoming poker players start playing small. The next step is playing satellites and getting invitationals to small tournaments. Here's the payout list for the 2008 World Series of Poker Main Event
Payouts
1. $9.1 million 6. $2.4 million
2. $5.8 million 7. $1.7 million
3. $4.5 million 8. $1.2 million
4. $3.7 million 9. $900k
5. $3.0 million

Ridiculous at how much money that is.

This is why:

"Dumb person":
So the idea behind poker is to earn as much money as possible from dumb people who play bad hands.

So, I figure I'm not dumb, I can capitalize on dumb people.

No offense.

Playing poker against dumb people is unethical. Although they are willing participants, they don't know what's good for them.

Sigh.
You are making it sound like they are mentally handicapped, completely incapable of independent thought while a lot of the huge fish are probably very smart and very succesful people, seeing as how they somehow managed to accumulate enough money to play poker for a lot of money.

If we are talking lower levels, then who cares if the players are dumb or not? Nobody is going to get hurt from losing a couple of hundred playing some low limit games -_-

As for how the top level players earn money, well, I don't play nosebleed games but I suppose the really sick players feed off the slightly less sick players + the whales (such as Guy LaLiberte of Cirque du soleil fame, the 40 000, 60 000 and 100 000$ buyin tables fill up faaaaaaast when he's playing).

First one should become a psychical hardstone.
Then playing cash will make you grow your capital faster than s&g.
When your capital is big enough going for big sponsored tourney is a good way to go.

Cash -> Capital
Capital -> Tourneys
Tourneys -> Fame&Fortune

Don't want to be lame but i expect a whine blog soon :D
Grinding in Sngs is quite horrible imo. I know that i'm playing with horrible monkeys but after 600 games i only X2ed my br and i'm still being raped by the 20% rake of 1$ sng ...
Maybe with 300 more games i gonna have a br 90 euros and take a shot at 5$ sngs or cash games
Quite depressing life time graph:
[image loading]

As you can see even with horrible opponents ( the others guys stats ) downswings can happen :o. Maybe i suck a bit too.

I just ended my worst loss streak ( 12 short handed sngs without being ITM ) x).
-12 euros yea !

Never said i'm good, but i'm playing with people way worse and it is still hard to increase my br. ( thanks 20% rake on micro :O ).

I just wanted to say that downswings always happen, especially when u play sngs.

I agree with you. Variance is so huge in this game that you need a large sample of hands or sngs to know if you are really a profitable and skilled player.

I'm not good so if my advices are bad, more skilled players can correct me .

For low level sngs ( 6 players 1$ ):

- Play because you like poker. If you want to play poker because you are bored / you need money / you like to gamble, you will actually lose $. Only play when you are "ready" because you will need patience. If you just want to have fun, play bw.

- Respect Bankroll management. You need at least 30 buy in or variance will rape you soon or later.

- Respect position, it is very important.

- Ax X < 10 are crappy, i don't like them and i only play them if i'm in a desperate situation ( low on chips and i will shove ) or big stack. The problem with this kind of hand is that even if u get an A on the flop someone has maybe an higher Ax. Nearly auto-fold if you are not in position. You can play them if they are of the same color.

- Fold your AK / AQ / AJ / AA / JJ / KK / QQ if you feel that you are doomed. Any straight / flush own this. Beginners often think that this kind of hand is awesome but i fold them sometimes if the board is too scary.

- Bet big pre flop when you have a good hand ( when you are in hu you can slowplay ) because slowplaying is really bad early game when many players are involved in action ( except if you have a monster combo on the flop ).

- In sng i like to limp with small pockets when it isn't expensive ( early game ) because sets are real gold mines. But when the blinds are higher it is auto fold except if i'm short stack ( i will shove to get a coin flip ) or big stack facing a short stack ( same reason ).

- read stuff on Liquid Poker ( the best advice in my post lol ).

20-25 buyins is perfectly fine for low stakes, assuming you have tilt control and can move down when you drop below it (say when you drop to 15 buyins or something)
EDIT: I see you were talking about Sit n gos, I don't play those so maybe you need more buyins for that, I dunno.
