I wouldn't add people you only know online to facebook, unless you plan to meet them in person.
My page is very bland, just a wall because I don't expect to use it for entertainment. It's just an incredibly convenient way to keep in touch with people (relatives/friends you met on holiday, old school friends). And it's popular enough so that if you meet someone new you can say "add me on facebook", and exchange contact details later.
The people who see it as pointless probably have a very tight group of close friends that text or IM a lot. (Or they don't have many friends, but obviously everyone on the Internet is super-popular)

lol that's all i do when i'm at work. browse fb cuz .. i'm a slacker. but beyond that, i think it's a great way to keep up to date with people you normally wouldn't keep in touch with IRL. i have friends from high school i was able to find and keep in touch with - even if it's just sayin hi on their wall or something. it's a great method to notify your friends in similar proximity to events and such as well. and how else can i share pictures with people - for free? :D
for really social people, for those who travel a lot or move around a bunch, fb is a convienient medium to use to be able to keep in touch.
