Ya, the [R] stands for Rant.
I don't understand why everyone seems to be under the impression that SC2 is coming out soon? I mean, do you people forget who we are dealing with? It's Blizzard. The same company that took 40954309 years on Starcraft: Ghost only to end up throwing it in the trash. The same company who took about 1.5 years to release a simple bnet patch that would allow WGT to launch it's ladder (only to have some random bug fuck it all up). The same company who doesn't like to release products until they are 100% satisfied that it will live up to their really high standards...
Blizzard hasn't even announced a release date, and everybody's talking about it as if we're 3-4 months away from the best game ever. If they haven't even announced a release date, what makes anybody think it's going to be out even in the next year? Every time they do announce a release date, it always gets pushed back, pushed back some more, and pushed back a 3rd time just for good measure. Coupled with the fact that they are working on so many games right now: D3, WoW expansion, SC2, unannounced MMORPG... and we get a completely delusional group of people who think SC2 is just around the corner!
If SC2 is released any time before mid 2009, I'll be surprised as fuck... but even that seems like a generous estimate, I can't imagine it will be out before 2010.

yeah I find it funny how people are saying stuff like "October 12th" or "December 5th" or "December 31st." Their justification is that places like Amazon and Gamestop.com have those release dates. It's like, come on...

I don't know, I was in the Frozen Throne beta and they seemed to be in awful hurry to get that out when it clearly wasn't balanced or even close to it (in my opinion). Granted, SC2 isn't even in beta yet, but it might be closer than you suspect.

They're definitely not starting external testing until after Blizzcon, and alpha+beta will last at least 6 months. Unless huge redesigns occur, mid-late next year is a reasonable guess for the release, anything before that is impossible, and 2010+ is realistic.

Personally I don't really care when it comes out and I don't even know if I'll play it when it does. BW is good enough for the moment IMO.

The longer it takes, the better. I want a perfect game, or no SC2 at all.

Actually the fact they are working on so many games makes no difference since their teams to make these games are completely separate. Also if you are following progress of their games, the wow expansion should be out in January and some time after that Id imagine they would be done with the SC single player, meaning we might see a beta the start of early next summer.

You think it will be released in 2010 just because sc was delayed and ghost was cancelled? Listen to yourself. You are trying to compare today's Blizzard with Blizzard from 12 years ago. Blizzard is much more organized and punctual since they have become a powerful company as opposed to their 1990's start-up like phase.
Look at the game. It's at least 90% done (arguably 95%). All that's left is fixing some ugly graphics (such as the nomad, which is currently in progress), balance testing, creating the campaign (which may be close to complete), and some aesthetic elements such as tilesets. On top of that, I would bet that they have a private beta session going on as we speak. I bet a release date of early-mid 2009 will be announced at Blizzcon.

Someone I know that is in korea claims that beta is out there already which I doubt, and he says that the word on the street over there is december 13th...which only makes sense in that it would sell an incredible amount of copies due to holiday and what not.

Christmas this year strikes me as completely unreasonable. My best guess is they'll announce a summer 2009 release, and get it out Christmas 2009.
