so, some of you know about my ninja training.

anyways, I kinda got bored of that I really don't care about winning that anymore. the reason is I found something else I care about, I would like to be a professional climber.

bouldering is soooo fun, and it's like the best way to get strong ever. like, you can get insanely strong from bouldering and all the strength is functional, as well.

I built a climbing wall so I could train in my back yard, here it is !

The wall is 8' by 8' vertical and then 4' by 8' at a 45 degree overhang. If you can't tell, I make paths and mark them with tape.

and I might as well post a short video of someone bouldering a hard route.

This is Chris Sharma (probably the best in the world) doing a very difficult route:

ok, the end

it's ok, you'll quit being a professional climber and be a professional quitter soon.

Wow, that's insane.
You'll have to post your own climbing videos once you get good, that shit looks crazy hard. He was holding himself up with his fingertips at some points.

What'd it cost you in materials/time to put up that wall anyway?

So you were going for ninjawarrior? That's a pretty nice wall.

The one thing that is disappointing about high level climbing is it's more about finger/grip/forearm strength than actual skill. But it's all well and good regardless.

Good luck sir.

It costed me about $200 for materials for the wall.

It was maybe 20 hours of work including going to town and brnging back the wood and stuff, but that's by myself. Certain parts I had to have help (like standing the wall up).

But I had never built anything before I could probably do it faster and better the 2nd time around.

The holds costed maybe $300 including shipping, for what I have up there. I will probably order more in the future. Actually, in a while I am changing locations so I might just build a bigger and better wall.

*edit - i said 30 hours of work, meant 20

Wow, a pretty big wall for a few hundred bucks, that's actually a totally worthwhile investment even if you aren't *that* into climbing.
How did you go about making it? Did you copy the design from someplace or just kind of made it up and then built it?

I asked my dad some questions because he's built stuff, and I did some research online, but my final design I ended up just randomly making because I ran out of money and materials lol, and I didn't want to wait for my next check to arrive. It ended up working, because I did some evil genius moves to strengthen it, but I know my design isn't very good.

The most important steps are to build strong frames for each sheet of plywood (I used 2x6s with 2x4 slats for added strength). Then drill holes through the plywood, and install evenly spaced t-nuts into it. Then, bolt the frames together. Then, build the stand/bracing for the frames so that they can stand up without falling. They have to be very sturdy. hang from the frames, even try to jump from one part of the frame to another. It has to be very strong because if part of the wall suddenly broke (which won't happen if u build it right), you could break your neck.

Once it is ready, screw the plywood onto the frames. With a properly built brace(unlike mine) you should be able to use the full length of the wall, instead of cutting the top off halfway like I did. But if you are going to go that high, you are going to want a high-impact crash mat to protect you underneath the wall.

Once the wall is together it is easy to install holds wherever you want them.

If anyone actually wants help building one of these I have no problem with going into more detail or answer any other questions.

Sorry if I bump this old blog, but it was the only thing about climbing (mountains, not the ladder) that I found on the forum.

I live very close to the Dolomites in Italy, and I'm very often up there for some trekking, but the area is full of climbers aswell:

https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/iDvSbEMqDFy05KpJLQD9IA?feat=directlink

https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/Wxe2G7L748bMil3-04IH1w?feat=directlink

https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/M3jVmt8jZ8bIU2U3XMxesg?feat=directlink

This is a natural training center on the mount "cinque torri" (Five towers) This is an overview:

https://picasaweb.google.com/Wazabo41/GitaMontagna14_06_09Nuvolau?feat=directlink#5347211847149366834

But there are also really difficult and technical routes in the area like this one, on the "Tre cime di Lavaredo."

Some dudes after climbing those mountains like to take the fastest possible route down:

Many others prefer to do artificial climbing on the "Vie Ferrate" like this one:

While I did in the past few easy and short climbs I mostly go for some trekking, also in the off-seasons, this is a small video of some pictures I took last autumn!

A flat land is a boring land. Keep walking, keep climbing!

I'm climbing for about two years now, still a rookie really but it got to me. Every weekend at least two trips to do some climbing out in the open. Loving the lifestyle. I wonder if the TL community ever gets so big that we could actually set up a climbing event somewhere in the Central Europe or something... I would definately sign up for that.

Envy of climbing. It's so fun, I really wish there was a place closer to where I live though, currently it's a 50minute drive downtown which is quite inconvenient for me right now =(

Keep at it mate, I hope it worksout for you! Climbing is great

I wanted to make a bouldering wall last summer too, but I started to draw some waaay too advanced shit cuz i always go in over my head :D Scrapped the project.

Think like this:

I really like bouldering/climbing, its the only form of workout i can do without getting bored easily.

Wow, i didn't realize this was such a necro bump by the guy over me. NVM i guess

I see your necro and raise you a year necro.

In all seriousness, I would REALLY like to see if there are any other climbers on TL. Climbing, lead and bouldering, has become my passion and main hobby for almost a year now. It would be really nice to find people on TL to share experiences! I'm going to Getu He, China next year
