Hi, next year I am going to be attending Texas A&M University and chose Engineering as my major. However, I'm not very strong in math and I know that you'll have to live and breathe calculus if you want to become a successful engineer.

Another area that interested me was Dentistry as I find the worst that can happen is a patient with bad breathe and the pay isn't bad either. I knew I couldn't be a doctor as just thinking about opening someone's chest open made my feel my heart was geting ripped open(im a pussy i kno)

Anyways I'll stop boring u guys and basically my question is what exactly do u do in Dentistry. Like an engineer your gonna learn alot of math in general so what's general about dentistry? I asked a friend and he says I'm going to be learning about biology and some other things. I'm pretty decent at memorization and reading and answering questions is okay for me unlike engineering where when u take calculus i have a hard to understanding how to do it and therefore can't do homework problems and not becuz i'm lazy but because i don't understand how to do it so i can't start it.

Mainly in biology class i just remmeber taking notes, answering questions on worksheets, doing labs here and there..and if denistry is anything like this then i think i will enjoy it..but seriously feel free to correct me anytime lol cuz im so ignorant about anything related to the medical field. I'm sure it's more difficult or maybe engineering is more difficult and dentistry just makes u do more schooling? i dunno..engineering just seems difficult for me cuz i find calculus hard so..meh

What I want to do is both but thing is I know the basis of what im gonna be doing during engineering but i don't know anything about what kind of work one must do in order to be a dentist so I can't just dismiss the dentistry field yet as im still not familiar with what types of work that must be done in order to become a dentist.

Ok, I study Medicine at uni, where we basically sit alongside the Dentistry students. There is a lot of overlap so far (im still in early years).

If your squemish about cuttin people open, then I really cant recommend dentisry to you. Dentistry involves surgeries in which you have to do a lot of cutting and there will be a lot of blood.

What you will basically be learning is a lot of chemistry and biology. You will learn a good portion of human biology before then specialising in the anatomy and physiology of teeth. You will also do a lot of chemistry where you'll learn about the chemistry of certain medicines and stuff.

Now you should really sit down and think about what you want to do. You have to really judge how much you hate calculus. Because its going to make up the bulk of your studies if you do engineering. Howveer its not smart to just pick a degree with no knowledge of what your getting into either. I would go and talk to your local dentist, because they will be really helpful and wont bullshit you around with what its all about. In the end just be confident in your decision because theres nothing like starting a degree and deciding a few years down the track that you hate it.

At my uni, Dentistry is a lot harder to get into than Engineering as well, so you can keep that in mind as well when making the decision.

I wish you good luck in your endevour.

I'm studying dentistry and it's basically two entirely different field. One is as fen said chemistry, and biology. First you learn the basic levels of how the cells work, then you learn how the body works as whole with organs and stuff and then you learn anatomy of the head and teeth.

The second part is the practical stuff. There's some psychology with patient interaction and there is a lot of practical work. Dentists usually consider themselves more like artisans than doctors. It's not like you have to have perfect hand eye coordination because you'll learn that but you should be aware that if you compare it to medicine it more like surgery than anything else and you'll need those APM for sure. Also there will be blood. People bleed like crazy and you'll see all kinds of bodily fluids.

But seriously, DO NOT let that stop you. We had people faint the first few days but now even the most squemish persons just shrug it off because you'll get used to it incredibly fast.
So definently don't pick dentistry over medicne because of that. If you just want to wander around in a lab I'd pick medicine for sure because there are more diverse specialities and I'm sure there will be something you can choose that fits what you like.
Otherwise it's a pretty fun profession, especially if you enjoy working with your hands. (and 600.000 RPM drills).

being a doctor isn't about ripping people's chests open. only surgeons do that, and they are like, the very minority. you can do neurology (look at scans of people's brain), radiology (scans of people's body to look for cancer and stuff), dermatology (skin doctor), general practice (just family practice), and the list goes on.

avg entry gpa for dental schools in the US is 3.4, 3.5 ish. for med schools in US is about 3.6ish.

med school is 4 years after college, and 4-7 years after that for residency. residency is 60k/yr for about 50-60 hr weeks. then after residency, you make somewhere between 160k/yr and 300k/yr based on your specialty. avg debt of people coming out of residency is 250k. avg age is like, 34.

dentistry i think is just 4 years of dental school. dunno what the debt is. salary is around 130k/yr i think?

going into medicine is mostly about the time of your life spent studying 60hr/week in the library. that's a lot of commitment if you ask me. if you fuck a girl every week, that's 500 girls you could have fucked, but instead you chose med school so you can help other people. then when you graduate, you will have a wife who you are too busy to fuck since the avg workweek is 60 hrs. when you are gone, your wife will go to a bar and get fucked by some random bastard who rides a motorcycle. fuck this shit world, i'm going to australia.

doctors need more loving than that. what is this? the righteous pray for the wicked. the wicked prey on the righteous? fuck!!!!!!!!!!

be an orthodontist

its like being a dentist in the fact that you have to work with peoples' teeth
the difference is you basically apply braces to every single kid in town, so you generally don't have to do as many surgeries. Also the pay is ridiculous if you go to the right setting (i.e. suburbia)

No it is being a dentist. It's just a speciality. Still has to go through dental school (at least here).

if u really wanted to make some money, you should be a fake dermatologist.

go to the med school library and read everything you can about dermatology. then go to your dermatologist a lot and memorize what he does. then print out a license and start up shop. make 300k/yr ez

by the time they find out about you in 2 years, it's already time to retire and move to a cute mexican fishing village so who cares.
