I liked a couple songs, for example, When two are one; and their cover for Epic by faith no more was just hilarious; but their new album didn't really represent the band I used to know. Avantasia (you have to listen to the metal opera I and II) Helloween King Diamond (most people are put off by the vocals at first but its amazing music) Gravedigger (excalibur is a amazing album) Iced Earth Stratovarius (major influence on sonata arctica) Iron Savior Lost Horizon (great band, HAVE TO LISTEN TO)
Melodic Death metal (here il list some bands that might not fit the MDM description people use today, but to me this will always be MDM over bands like norther and bodom, crushing death metal with heavy metal melodies and solos)
In Flames (The Jester Race, Whoracle) Dark Tranquility Nightrage Dismember (my fav <3) At The Gates (more death trash in sound but have inspired a ton of MDM bands) Carcass (especially the album Heartwork) Mercenary (amazing amazing band) Amon Amarth Arch Enemy (older albums, i dont like Angela) Wintersun (a combo of a few genres, but still more MDM than bodom)
Black Metal (here il just list some of the softer more melodic ones, i dont wanna chase anyone away with burzum or marduk ^^)
Dimmu Borgir (not that black but very nice, symphonic) Bal Sagoth (some people dont like them, i love them) Old Mans Child (very much like Borgir) Naglfar Graveworm (kinda goth black, but still very nice) Immortal
Doom metal (il put some melodic doom bands here that could easily fit other categories since they mix a lot of genres, but il put them here just because of the atmosphere and lyrics)

those are the basics id say ^^, if you listen to these bands im sure you will find stuff you like and it will help you broaden your metal horizons, i didnt put down one of my favorite genres, goth metal, if you want il throw some goth bands out too, gl ^^.

Also, once you've listened to Legendary Tales, start listening to all their other albums in order (Symphony of Enchanted Lands, Dawn of Victory, Power of the Dragonflame, Symphony of Enchanted Lands 2, Triumph or Agony), because each one gets better than the last. You won't believe that's possible after listening to the first couple, but somehow they do anyway.
Other good power metal choices I didn't see listed are Freedom Call and Kamelot. Kamelot is AFAIK the only US based Power Metal band, and one of the best in the world. Epica and Black Halo in particular are sick albums.

Furthermore, yes I am passionate about music especially metal. I'm so completely passionate about metal and I so much LOVE to be 'in the style' of metal (divisive and elitist) that I LOVE these sorts of arguments.

Now what I was saying about rhapsody that makes them impervious to 'cheese' and ridicule is that, they are completely free with their taste in music. They just do what they want to, totally unbound by social coercion. They let their music (and their slightly suspect fashion sense) do the talking.
Whereas fagass, dickface bands like atreyu rely entirely on their membership to a specific scene of teenagers. They are outclassed in musical ability, compositional ability, and passion for music by hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of bands.
I'm just telling you what the general, proper metal scene thinks of atreyu and bands like that. You will never find a different opinion (although you might find one more diplomatically voiced) in a gig of a true metal band.

Just kind of getting into dream theatre. I hear one song I like, then I hear 2 I don't. They are, in my humble opinion, very pretentious and actually not very compositionally talented; though they are musically talented.

Labrie ruptured his vocal chords after Awake was recorded. In any case, I think that his voice is just fine and the difference between now and Images and Words can almost entirely be attributed to the song-writing. Indeed, when I saw them two weeks ago he nailed Surrounded.
Progressive Metal is my favorite genre (in all kind of variations). I would recommend the following bands for all who are interested in progressive (there are few bands who are not prog)

Lol.. Yea well i know what you are talking about. But i am 17 and i have a pretty refined taste in metal, which does not include shitty mainstream lame ass "fake" metal bands. A7x sucks.. Atreyu, Shadows Fall and all those other terrible bands (Disturbed, Most of slipknot, anything like breaking benjamin or mainstream shit) are just not real hardcore metal... They are ripoffs of really original bands such as CoB, Dimmu or Naglfar.. Wintersun is awesome!
What bothers me is when great bands become terrible such as CoB's new album and Dimmu newest album. They just are not the same and its a terrible thing!
There is also another genre on the side, which is Hardcore. Now there are bad bands that are metalcore like a few i listed above (see atreyu and Shadows Fall and probably even bullet for my valentine. which suck.) But then there are really original Hardcore bands such as Bring me The Horizon, Arsonists get all the girls and Born of Osiris(thanks sanity). These bands incorporate originality with the sound of the genre whilst using keyboards and having very quality breakdowns.
Then there are bands that have a sound pretty unique to themselves such as Winds of Plague, which combines hardcore with symphonic death metal and melodic death metal. Abigail Williams is another example of a melodic black metal band.

Check out 'Tale from the deep woods' or 'Callisto rising' as well as insanely kevin sorbo as hercules-style orchestration of 'battle magic' xD
