I'll start with some random semi popular bands. Is atreyu metal core or heavy metal? With their latest album can they be considered just gay? I liked a couple songs, for example, When two are one; and their cover for Epic by faith no more was just hilarious; but their new album didn't really represent the band I used to know. Is nightwish symphonic metal?
Is avenged sevenfold metal?

There are so many amazing metal bands that a thread like this is impossible. But I will list several you may not have heard of
The Forsaken Arcturus Skeleton Witch Borknagar Ulver Hate Forest (Extremely ridiculous, my favorite album is Battlefields. The most crushingly brutal and dark music ever)
And some you probably have but should listen to more! :D

you have to be quite young because you list bands that young people often listen to in those genres. Btw youth in metal = ignorance, always . Although megadeth and metallica will always stay there.
You always have to divide death metal into the three elements: grind, melodic and technical. JFAC, who are for kids btw because they are shit (imo), are grind, and devildriver (who are piss poor) are melodic. Better melodic death = wintersun, children of bodom.

A7X I used to listen to, but they are basically semi-christian emo/heavy metal.
Anyway, if you like these bands, chances are you just need to progress, like we all did at your age, to better bands. Don't worry, everyone's music taste is like yours when they are like, 16 or 17 (which you better be- if older, LAME). You just need to discover proper examples of those genres.
Ancestral listed proper bands btw. But I disagree with norther, who are ripoffs of CoB, who are pretty shite themselves (wintersun are better); I also disagree with behemoth, thier songwriting is uninspiring at best.
Check out necrophagist, emperor, opeth, dimmu borgir, rotting christ, pantera.
And for power metal, there is absolutely no way you cannot listen to rhapsody. Best power metal band ever (imo best songwriting in any genre of metal). Listen to their breakthrough album, legendary tales. Sick as!

oh machinae supremacy is quite nice, i got a album like 2 months ago, let me throw out some bands from various genres that i like, listen or die !!!!!
Power and Heavy Metal
Avantasia (you have to listen to the metal opera I and II) Helloween King Diamond (most people are put off by the vocals at first but its amazing music) Gravedigger (excalibur is a amazing album) Iced Earth Stratovarius (major influence on sonata arctica) Iron Savior Lost Horizon (great band, HAVE TO LISTEN TO)
Melodic Death metal (here il list some bands that might not fit the MDM description people use today, but to me this will always be MDM over bands like norther and bodom, crushing death metal with heavy metal melodies and solos)
In Flames (The Jester Race, Whoracle) Dark Tranquility Nightrage Dismember (my fav <3) At The Gates (more death trash in sound but have inspired a ton of MDM bands) Carcass (especially the album Heartwork) Mercenary (amazing amazing band) Amon Amarth Arch Enemy (older albums, i dont like Angela) Wintersun (a combo of a few genres, but still more MDM than bodom)
Black Metal (here il just list some of the softer more melodic ones, i dont wanna chase anyone away with burzum or marduk ^^)
Dimmu Borgir (not that black but very nice, symphonic) Bal Sagoth (some people dont like them, i love them) Old Mans Child (very much like Borgir) Naglfar Graveworm (kinda goth black, but still very nice) Immortal
Doom metal (il put some melodic doom bands here that could easily fit other categories since they mix a lot of genres, but il put them here just because of the atmosphere and lyrics)
Swallow The Sun Daylight Dies Opeth Draconian Katatonia (older stuff is doom, newer more rock orientated but still good)
those are the basics id say ^^, if you listen to these bands im sure you will find stuff you like and it will help you broaden your metal horizons, i didnt put down one of my favorite genres, goth metal, if you want il throw some goth bands out too, gl ^^.
