Just kind of getting into dream theatre. I hear one song I like, then I hear 2 I don't. They are, in my humble opinion, very pretentious and actually not very compositionally talented; though they are musically talented.
Pain of salvation...I'm in a band right now where we are covering like 3 of their songs and the guitarist's music sounds like them. I have gotten really sick of them. Labrie ruptured his vocal chords after Awake was recorded. In any case, I think that his voice is just fine and the difference between now and Images and Words can almost entirely be attributed to the song-writing. Indeed, when I saw them two weeks ago he nailed Surrounded.

Lol.. Yea well i know what you are talking about. But i am 17 and i have a pretty refined taste in metal, which does not include shitty mainstream lame ass "fake" metal bands. A7x sucks.. Atreyu, Shadows Fall and all those other terrible bands (Disturbed, Most of slipknot, anything like breaking benjamin or mainstream shit) are just not real hardcore metal... They are ripoffs of really original bands such as CoB, Dimmu or Naglfar.. Wintersun is awesome!
What bothers me is when great bands become terrible such as CoB's new album and Dimmu newest album. They just are not the same and its a terrible thing!
There is also another genre on the side, which is Hardcore. Now there are bad bands that are metalcore like a few i listed above (see atreyu and Shadows Fall and probably even bullet for my valentine. which suck.) But then there are really original Hardcore bands such as Bring me The Horizon, Arsonists get all the girls and Born of Osiris(thanks sanity). These bands incorporate originality with the sound of the genre whilst using keyboards and having very quality breakdowns.
Then there are bands that have a sound pretty unique to themselves such as Winds of Plague, which combines hardcore with symphonic death metal and melodic death metal. Abigail Williams is another example of a melodic black metal band.

Check out 'Tale from the deep woods' or 'Callisto rising' as well as insanely kevin sorbo as hercules-style orchestration of 'battle magic' xD
