Good job. If she's anything like any of the girls I know, she's probably fully aware of what she's doing to you but won't admit it (to anyone or to herself). Girls do this type of thing because for some reason, they always tag some poor guy as the eternal backup who they toy with but secretly aren't attracted to. It's partially because once you show interest, they know they can set their sets "higher" and have backup just in case.
But they'd never admit it, and they'll feel wronged in the process. You did the right thing - I wish more guys did, because I know so many guys who end up pining after those types of girls and writing emo poetry to them.
