http://www.imdb.com/chart/top

Since I don't really have much to do this summer so I figure I might as well watch a bunch of top-rated movies.

I've never really been a huge movie person, but I do enjoy going to the theaters for the occasional movie. As such, I haven't seen a bunch of really famous movies that I really should see. I'm pretty out of touch with American pop culture, so this will give me a chance to familiarize myself with a bit of it.

USC has a VHS/DVD collection of every single major film ever created, and students have access to it. So since I won't have to pay for renting all these movies, cost isn't an issue.

Off of the list, I don't care for B&W movies--I fall asleep during them no matter how amazing people say they are. Please recommend me some must-see movies off of that list!

Thanks

Well dude it's kind of stupid question to be honest

they are all worth watching watching... at least first 100 for sure

anywayz personally i suggest that all three parts of the Godfather, Pulp Fiction and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest would be a good start ;}

enjoy

Everything on that list is awesome, if you want to avoid B&W movies, just avoid anything older than 1952-4, or hell, start from 1960 to be safe. Also avoid Schindler's List, that was made in 93 but B&W.

I went through and picked some favourites, then I realised the list would be 100+ by the time I was done.

seven samurai

omg imo public opinion sucks ass. The order of these films is fucking gay. Gladiator, gone with the wind and la vita e bella should blatantly be in top 20!

But most of the list is just weirdly ordered imo.

(the graduate, dr strangelove, schindler's list, shawshank redemption, matrix, pulp fiction, etcetc)

Man I also like the last samurai. When the warlord dies at the end is very emotional to me.

the list changes quite a bit with new releases, you should downgrade any film from the past few years by quite a bit, of course they're still pretty good. I've been doing the same thing for a few years and i've pretty much only got the really old ones left (well them and westerns but i've never liked the wild west so they don't count)

If you enjoy westerns I really recommend the good, the bad and the ugly, and once upon a time in the west, they're #4 and #18 listed with their italian names, simply incredible movies and by far my personal favorites on that list.

Films with a great story and plot twists (in not particular order):
1. The Sting (everyone knows it I suppose)
2. Pure Formality (Una pura formalita - Great Italian film by Tornatore)
3. Chinatown (Chandler's type movie by Polanski. Simply amazing)
4. House of Games (a must see! Both delicate and stunning)

Love stories:
1. Dangerous Liassons (tear-jerker with Pfeiffer and Malkovich. Good acting indeed)
2. Chungking Express (made in Hong Kong)
3. Je t'aime (French movie about perverse love. Starring J. Birkin)
4. Meet Joe Black (has some charm imo)

Westerns:
1. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (S. Leone at best)
2. High Noon (a classic)
3. Pat Garret and Billy the Kid (knock, knock, knocking on heavens door)
4. Missouri Breaks (With Brando and Nicholson. Peak of the genre)
5. Unforgiven (A must see, breaks all the westerns cliches. Starring and directed by Eastwood)

Comedys:
1. Galaxy Quest
I dont like comedys so no nothing comes to my mind now.

Other good:
1. Godfather
2. Pulp Fiction
3. Barwy Ochronne (polish movie by Zanussi)
4. Naked Lunch
5. Clockwork Orange
and many more...

Lock stock is probably the movie I've watched the most times, soooooooooooooooo awesome
Btw if you liked those two you should give Revolver a try. Not quite as good but still vvvv enjoyable.

I watched The Devil's Advocate recently. For most of it I was like "I can see what you're doing here and you're doing it very well but I'm just not interested" but I stuck with it anyway. I decided it was one of those things which is clearly very good but which for some reason just doesn't do it for me. And then the ending happened and I was in shock. I remained in shock for some time after that. I was stunned by how good the film was. Watch The Devil's Advocate.

My quote is actually from Snatch. One of my top ten movies.

IMO , you need to see Into The Wild. That movie was very inspirational.

Dogville with Nicole Kidman is must. It has great story even if at the first glance may seem boring, but when I started watching I was hooked.

Then movies like Godfather I & II are pretty good choices as well, so are Fight Club, Citizen Kane, A Clockwork Orange and Se7en.
