What's the best way? Working out doesn't work, reading books will MAKE me want to stay up, and I won't read anything not interesting to me, I keep staying up at 5AM to sleep and this is killing my days, anyone have suggestions?

Force yourself to wake up really early I guess, even if you get like 2 hours of sleep the first night. After that it should fix itself since you will be tired at normal times.

Insomnia really sucks. Fortunately I only suffer from it occasionally.

Join Fight Club.

No, seriously, I find regular workout / sports work well. But you have to commit yourself to a hard and challenging schedule. It doesn't help if you just work out when you can't sleep, you have to do a full program to see any effect.
At least that's how it works out for me.

Wake up at the same early time every day, take no naps, and do a challenging workout every day for a week. After that week, 8 hours prior to your wake-up time, do nothing that'd excite you. 7.5 hours prior, get in bed. If you can't fall asleep by 7 hours prior to your wake-up time, then seek extra help (sleep aid, remedies, doctor, etc).

Oh and some more things you should strictly follow: no caffeine or other stimulants after mid day and no food close to your bedtime.

And note that if you fuck up one day by sleeping in late or by staying up later than your bedtime (once you establish your bedtime) then you will be fucked for a few days and will have to stay strict and be patient to get back on course.

Not sure exactly what level of insomnia you're talking about here, but when I had it in college to the point where I literally couldn't sleep for a couple weeks, the student medical center gave me normal over the counter antihistamine (diphenhydramine I think?). Apparently the stuff makes you drowsy enough to cut through the insomnia so you can start sleeping.

From what I've been told, there's nothing you can really do about insomnia other than wait for it to pass naturally; all you can really do is use something to help you sleep - luckily it doesn't take full scale sleeping pills or anything.

I believe it's usually induced by stress, odd sleeping habits, and maybe one or two other similar issues. I'd recommend trying to get yourself on a consistent sleep schedule, and cutting a little stress out of your life if possible.

I have the same problem, can't go to bed before ~5am or i'll just lay there and stare at the ceiling. if you force yourself to wake up early every day and manage to not take a single nap during the day (this is where i always fail) you should be able to go to sleep earlier after a week or two.

I find that if i grab a beer and go watch some TV i usually get sleepy as hell after a while, maybe try that.

An example of how bad is... I went to bed at 7AM on Saturday, I woke up at 4PM. But during school days it's 5AM-(depending on schedule)10AM/12PM.

Oh, and I never take naps. Is it possible to just lay in bed and just, stare at something? Or what? Because usually I just lay there, without doing anything, then I just think. And thinking keeps me awake.

try not to stress about it

if you really need to sleep, go to bed in a dark room, with no computer or tv on and close your eyes.

keep your eyes closed, avoid moving unless you develop a cramp for some reason, and just let your mind flow.

Dont try to block out thoughts, but dont try to actively steer them either. You just sort of observe them without attaching to them. Eventually when youve worked through all your stressors, extra thoughts etc it gets easier to sleep.

if its not crucial to go to sleep on time, dont worry about it. stressing over it just makes it harder.

i don't understand how people can have insomnia. it's just one of those things that don't make sense, like a laptop battery that doesn't die. wtf? that's not possible. if you have a lot of energy, then deplete your fucking batteries. whenever I'm out playing table tennis or swimming or soccer and i push myself really hard I always get back and i can barely keep my arms up and i sleep like a sack of shit.

so many people i'm with always try to act tough and cool after we play sports like "wow omg can you believe that i'm not tired yet?" well yea dipshit you didn't fuckin run HARD

if you really are indeed superman and can run for like 6 days straight then get on a fuckin dynamo and start help create electricity. until then take your insomnia and shove it up your ass.

i mean, most people I know that have insomnia... what do they do? nothing. they just sit around waiting as if expecting a big cup of sleepiness to slap them right across the face. if you're sitting around doing nothing well then you're not getting tired. if you're not getting tired no shit it's not gonna help you get to sleep.
Yea that looks just like Kang Min... amazing game sense... and uses mind games well, but has the micro of a washed up progamer.

no
I mean
if you really want to listen to a song a couple times before you go to bed, or have a song stuck in your head go for it.

but you should turn it off after like 20 minutes max
and dont use it as a sleep aid

Its more stress and repression than physical exhaustion I think.

lol wtf?
how is sleeping from 5-12 insomnia? that's a perfectly normal amount of sleep just at the wrong time. wake up at whenever you need to wake up every day (gonna guess its something like 7) and dont take naps.
if you wake up at 7 everyday and still can't fall asleep by say 1am, even though you take no naps, are energetic whole day, and it's been over a week, then props to you. use that extra time to get some work done.

Yeah, this isn't insomnia. This is just you having a screwed up sleep cycle. My advice for this would be to just skip a night of sleep. Pick some night where you don't have much important you have to do the next day and just don't go to bed. Try to stay up until like 9-10pm if you can, then get up at 7-8am the next morning, and try to get yourself used to a schedule similar to that. It's probably not the best method to fix your cycle exactly, but it's definitely the fastest.

You're not describing insomnia here either. Not being tired because you haven't done anything == silly, it =/= insomnia. Insomnia == you are tired as fuck but can't actually fall asleep. Insomnia is when, after a normal schedule of activity which makes you tired, you go to bed but can't fall asleep. It's typically stress induced and lasts 1-2 weeks. After a couple days your life just sucks, because you're completely drained physically and mentally, and no matter how many hours you lie in bed for you can't fall asleep. Going out and running or something doesn't help - believe me, I tried. Getting yourself more exhausted doesn't help anything. You get all the wonderful effects of sleep deprivation and such, and it basically turns you into a total wreck until it runs its course.

Exercise. If you can afford to put in a couple of hours hiking or jogging in the evening, that'll do it every time.

Get Tom Clancy books. Not the novels (most of which are actually interesting in some places) but the military technical/organizational nonfiction. Two to five pages will put you to sleep, guaranteed.

Listening to Gregorian chant also does wonders.

I have that problem too sometimes, the thing is to not "try" to sleep.
Just relax, like you were taking a nap and you suddenly fall asleep.

go buy some sleeping pills. The kind with diphenhydramine. I suffer from insomnia, and thats usually what I do. If I screw up my schedule by staying up really late the next night I take 50mg of that stuff and fall right to sleep. Then force yourself up early the next day, and it should help you get on a better schedule. Also, try to avoid having bright lights around like playing bw (this always keeps me up), watching tv can help but sometimes keeps me awake, or I don't know what else. Try reading something also after taking the diphenhydramine that usually works also. Exercising during the day helps as well. Eventually, just try and taper off of the heavy dose and switch to benadryl, which has half the amount and then nothing. Lastly, recently I tried some muslce relaxation meditation stuff. I'm sure you can just google something, but
its probably the best night of sleep I have had in awhile. I'm rambling, but this should make sense. Gl.

yes they are. my mother took them and slept well but later on she could'nt sleep without them. finally she decided to not take the pills and could't sleep for 15 consecutive days, they are extremely addictive

I think forcing yourself to wake up early is the best, but mostly just do something during the day that will be tiring such as school or work

There's nothing really doctors can do it about it, it just has to run its course. The times I've had it I just take benadryl when going to bed for a week or two, it's enough to help you start sleeping. Actual sleeping pills are unnecessary, I'd avoid them. As long as you're sensible about it there shouldn't be any risk of getting addicted to benadryl.

lol wtf?
how is sleeping from 5-12 insomnia? that's a perfectly normal amount of sleep just at the wrong time. wake up at whenever you need to wake up every day (gonna guess its something like 7) and dont take naps.
if you wake up at 7 everyday and still can't fall asleep by say 1am, even though you take no naps, are energetic whole day, and it's been over a week, then props to you. use that extra time to get some work done.

Lol, this is this semester, past semesters were 2-3hrs of sleep.

that's still not insomnia lol? my roomate got by on 4hrs of sleep somehow with an occasional nap every other week. props to him, but for me it's more efficient to sleep 2-3 extra hours and then be wide awake and work much faster throughout the day.

let me clarify: if you sleep, you're not insomniac. you sleep because you're tired, to regen. if you have insomnia, even if you're tired you cannot sleep. it sucks, it blows, and you think the whole world is against you. then you stop giving a shit about what was giving you a hard time (some bitch decides to break up with you for instance) and the stress goes away since you don't care anymore and then you sleep fine because a lot of it is stress based.

i think someone already said something similar to this.

This may sound like fucking bullshit, but I will guaratee you this works or your money back. Simply have a very intense masturbation session where you orgasm at least 3 times. If you find it hard to orgasm the 2nd or 3rd time, shove your middel finger or a pencil with a smooth tip into your arse hole. This will induce an ejaculation as you push on your prostate.

I will be exhausted from the session that you will fall asleep.

But what if the person is a chronic masturbator whose also an insomniac?

Typically I close my eyes and lay there, and don't allow myself to move at all costs. Also, turning out the lights is helpful, this includes all your night-lights.

wear sunglasses before you go to sleep, this will put you in a sleepy mood and so your eyes can slowly adjust to the darkness. (Like an hour before you go to sleep)

Just sleep at regular times and your clock should reset itself and get use to a normal sleeping time

I do the same thing, but I really enjoy it. Except I can fall asleep, too. I just take naps during the day for some reason.

Stress always fucks with my sleep schedule. As others have mentioned though, a good evening work out helps relieve stress and wears you out.

exactly what I do... and fuck who put those college lessons at 8 am, I hate that. never been to them. xD

I kinda like laying in the bed and pondering, but it's baaaaaad. have to go back to normal sleeping habits. I've had this problem like half an year now, can't remember last time I slept at night for 2 or more days in a row. it really kills your life.
