Last week Jaedong and Much faced off in the Semifinals A of the Arena MSL. Jaedong being the ZvP powerhouse he is and with a previous victory over Much in proleague made him seem to be the most likely victor of this series. However both players are playing some of their best games currently, and this being the case, may lead to an exciting series of games.
Game 1
The first map was Athena a 3 player map that is relatively untested with only 2 ZvPs played on it.
The first set begins with Much warping in at 6 O’clock while Jaedong spawns at 2 O’clock. The game looks to be a standard one with Much opening with FE and a 12 pool from Jaedong.
Much, scouting the 12 pool, opts to warp in a forge before his nexus to help defend against any early game zergling aggression. Knowing that his nexus will be late due to early forge/cannons Much begins to harass Jaedong’s drone at his natural to prevent a hatchery being laid down. Jaedong is eventually forced to place his hatchery off to the side.
Shortly after the hatchery is placed Jaedong’s zerglings pop from their eggs and proceed to kill Much’s scouting probe and Jaedong lays down his third hatchery at its proper place at his natural.
Jaedong repeatedly denies Much’s scouting with his zerglings which allows him to tech to lair without Much's knowledge. Once his lair pops Jaedong immediately lays down a spire and sends a drone to expand at 12 O'clock and shortly after to the main at 8 O'clock
Meanwhile, Much has teched to a stargate and has his first corsair roaming around hunting overlords. Much also scouts the spire tech and quickly lays down a couple cannons to defend and continues to pump corsairs.
While defending against potential mutalisks Much sends out a couple dark templars to scout for expansions and hopefully deal some damage. Soon Much finds Jaedong's 12 O'clock expansion and proceeds to kill the extractor and a couple Zerglings with 2 DTs before being forced to run away by a sunken.
About now Jaedong's mutalisks have popped and he begins to harras Much's main dealing little damage and eating a couple storms. In response to Jaedong's mutalisk harass Much warps in a dark archon in hopes of maelstroming the mutalisks. And that's exactly what he does as he moves out with a large Dragoon/Zealot/HighTemplar army to kill 12 O'clock.
After dealing with the mutalisk harass Much proceeds to raze both expansions at 12 O'clock. Eventually Jaedong cleans up the the remnants of Much's force but is left with only 3 bases to Much's 2 and a warping in 3rd.
Noticing Much's 3rd being created Jaedong hurries to stop it and takes out the main pylon disabling all the cannons. Jaedong then proceeds to deal more damage with his harass in Much's main by sniping high templars and another dark archon.
While Jaedong is destroying his expansion Much decides to move out but with some excellent harass Jaedong snipes the high templars in Much's army allowing him to attack it head on when Much begins to attack Jaedong's 8 O'Clock expansion. Jaedong quickly takes down Much's army then rushes to stop Much's second attempt to take a 3rd base.
Much begins to flounder and panic and is sending out small forces in hopes of killing one of Jaedong's expansions, but due to the mobility of the mutalisks and Jaedong's quick reactions each small attack is quelled before it can do anything.
Much tries one last ditch effort to get back in this game and attacks 8 O'clock again but Jaedong is on top of this and with another impressive bit of mutalisk micro snipes the high templar and then cleans up Much's army.
Much realizing he's defeated GGs.
Jaedong 1-0 Much[gm]
Game 2
The second set was on Tiamat a 2 player map that like Athena has been relatively untested. Jaedong was one of only 2 Zerg players that had ZvPed here and he had walked away with a victory over YoonJoong.
The second set begins with Jaedong spawning at bottom right while Much warps in at top left. Immediately Much opts to FE again and Jaedong decides to go a 12 pool/speed build. Much scouting this lays down a forge to defend against the zerglings.
Jaedong realizing he won't be able to do much damage against Much decides to deny scouting and tech towards a 2 hatch lair build. Much still expecting a zergling attack lays down a 3rd cannon and places probes to defend against this.
As Much begins his core Jaedong's lair pops and Jaedong promptly lays down a spire. Soon after Much's core finishes he places a Stargate in his main.
Much sensing something dastardly afoot starts a cannon at his main and natural but Jaedongs mutalisks arrive right as it finishes and kill it quickly.
Not being able to defend his main against Jaedong's mutalisks Much types out.
Jaedong 2-0 Much[gm]
Game 3
The third set was on Colosseum, a 4 player map, which statsitically favors zerg. Jaedong having gone 2-0 previously on this map was once again the favorite in this set.
The third set begins with Much warping in at top left while Jaedong spawns at bottom left. Much opens with 1 gate at his choke while Jaedong opts for a 12 hatch at his natural. Once Much's gateway finishes he immediately begins a zealot that he sends out when it has finished to pressure Jaedong.
Much's harass proves to be ineffective and Jaedong quickly dispatches Much's zealot. Meanwhile Jaedong had taken his 3rd with his 3rd hatchery giving him immediate access to 3 gases.
Now both players settle down for a little and get their macro on. Much decides to tech towards a +1 zealot speed build while Jaedong starts a lair.
Once Jaedong's lair pops he lays down a spire and realizing what Much is doing proceeds to mass zerglings and add a couple sunkens to defend against the +1 attack.
After defeating Much's first attack Jaedong then sends his mutalisks to Much's main in hope of wreaking some havok but Much's cannons and archons prevent Jaedong from doing much damage.
Soon after deflecting Jaedong's harass Much moves out with an army consisting of 3 archons a hand full of zealots and a dragoon. Much immediately pushes towards Jaedong's base in hopes of inflicting some damage but is promptly turned away by a large force of sunkens, hydra, zergling, and mutalisks.
After deflecting the attack Jaedong proceeds to set up a lurker contain at Much's 3rd base. The high ground and amount of units Jaedong had on the ramp spelled trouble for Much but with some great storms and impressive observer management Much cut a path through the contain.
After breaking out Much takes his 3rd base but by now Jaedong was on 4 bases and had teched to Hive. With swarm and a decent sized army of lurker/ling Jaedong was able to stop Much from killing his 4th base.
After cleaning up the remnants of Much's army Jaedong sets up a contain outside the back door to Much's 3rd and the takes bottom right's main and natural. But Much totally ignoring the contain runs around it to kill Jaedong's 4th base and is successful.
Despite killing Jaedong's 4th Much was in trouble because his natural and main were mined out leaving him with only 1 active mining base.
Much hoping to even the base count some heads to bottom right and manages to kill the main's hatchery before losing his army.
Despite this small victory Much was about to be in a world of hurt only having 1 mining base compared to Jaedong's 5 and recently started 6th.
Much in an act of desperation sends out a small army to hopefully kill the bottom right bases, but Jaedong, deciding it's worth trading those for expansions for Much's main, counters and begins to raze Much's main.
After losing his last army trying to kill Jaedong's 4th Much realizes he's lost and types out.
Jaedong 3-0 Much[gm]
Final Notes:
Despite it being a 3-0 victory for Jaedong I think Much showed some impressive play and did very well considering he was facing the #1 ZvPer at the moment.
