I'm involved in a linguistic academic research study that needs American native speakers to answer a few hypothetical questions. It is a little bit long, so I would appreciate if any one interested in taking it PM me!
The type of questions are like:
1. You are a CEO of a company, one day, one of your assistants comes to your office and talks about a marketing plan that he recommends. However, you totally disagree with him and you do not think it would work as well. Now you would say:
2. When discussing a new movie with your good friend, your good friend considers it very interesting. However, you deeply think this movie is too superficial. Now you would say:
Thanks a lot and I hope some of you have the time to take this.

I can help you if I'm allowed to be Canadian ;P I don't know if American encompasses western society, or literally just the U.S.A.

1. "Your proposal looks good on paper, I won't deny that, but you have to look at some of the flaws. THIS flaw, THIS flaw, and THIS FLAW" dude that's a horrible hypothetical question how can we answer it when it's so ambiguous? i would never just tell my assistant "no that's wrong and wouldn't work," i would provide legitimate reasons as to why his marketing plan would be less efficient than the current one.
2. that's way too vague. is it superficial because it's pretentious? is it superficial because it sends a similar message to other interesting movies but brings it way too close to the surface that it shoves it down your throat? is it superficial because it's that new hotttie or nottie paris hilton movie?
i hope not all the questions are this vague because it's just way too tough to answer without sounding like a dogmatic jackass

"Your proposal looks good on paper, I won't deny that, but you have to look at some of the flaws."
You didn't even look at it! Jackass! :D
"that's way too vague. is it superficial because it's pretentious?"
The question is fine, you just don't know what superficial means :X In this case I would say it obviously means a lack of depth in the movie: ie: sex, drugs, and explosions (or whatever you personally consider superficial) without a real story.

So, that includes all new Hollywood movies . Maybe yubee was trying to clarify why the movie would qualify as superficial!

These questions seem far to vague. How one would respond to them depends on a lot more information than what you provided.
|
Maybe they are intentionally somewhat vague. Maybe the study is seeing how the participants interpret the questions in different ways, and respond to subtle changes in the wording! Or maybe it's just counting the frequency of certain words when used in certain contexts... We don't know and shouldn't, or it would skew the results

1) YOUR FIRED!
2) How can you call me a friend and possibly like this movie???
just kidding
1) I dont think this proposal will work and here are the reasons why (list reasons).
2) Meh, I didn't like it. I think it was too superficial.

This is so fucking vague.
1. I don't like this plan.
2. I thought this movie was superficial.
I don't know how you can expect anything more without some background.

You're supposed to pm him to get all the questions. Maybe not everyone's like these?
|
1. I disagree with your assessment 2. I thought this movie was superficial

|
1. "I will seriously consider your plan. Thank you for your continued effort on the company's behalf" Then I would shove the report in a drawer (or a shredder)
2. "It was pretty awesome. Lets get Pizza and Beer"

Why do we need to PM him to get the questions? So those questions were just teasers? What the fuck.

Unless these are questions to find out our interpretation, they are pretty much impossible to give decent answers to. What is left out is your relationship with the person you are talking to. Is the worker someone you talk to every day or a random you dont even know's name. If you do know him well enough, what do you think of him. Is this something out of the ordinary?
If my 'good friend' was someone I was interested in, my response would be a lot different to what it would be if my 'good friend' was a drinking buddy. Your relationship matters a LOT to how you go about expressing your feelings to someone.
