It's a bit ironic that i found the way to make time for myself to watch vods, when i won't be needing it anymore. Through most of the year, i have worked from 9am to 5pm and the i'm off to the university, with some classes finishing up to 11pm (rarely though, usually they end earlier). With this schedule i have to either watch vods at work, possible but not practical, or not watch at all (too lazy to do it on weekends). I was without watching for a long time, and didn't missed it altogether. But when the vicio* calls, i had to come up with something.
Vods + Ipod
So, the simple solution was to watch Vods while i was travelling either to work or university (30 min aprox).
The first program i came across, in yakii's small vod thread times, was Videora. It's a good software, easy too use, that can convert most movies (.flv too) to the ipod format, MP4 and H.264.
The pros it has is that you can select the type of compression you want (video, sound quality, etc.) and it gives you an idea of the time and quality the resulting video will have.
A drawback it has is that for some features, like queue list, you have to pay (hey, it's a free software, it's awesome what it already does). The other drawback is that it consumes quite a lot of resources while it compressing.
So, the trick was simple, download the vod, let it convert it and then upload it with itunes (i think you have to have the paid version for automatic upload thingy to work).
MP4 vs H.264
Using Videora, i always chose H.264 because it's has a better compression suited for Ipod. Files are smaller (not an issue with 30 min max vods and a 30gbs ipod) and it consumes significantly less battery than MP4 (less processor usage). On the other hand, MP4 never had compression glitches while H.264 has some even with the best quality picked (which still beats MP4 file size). Only little annoying things, mostly when in the vods they switch from in-game to players (player shape/movement, game colours).
Youtube
AFter some time the glory of DCinside was diminished from us non-koreans, i looked for an alternative. I found a program with such an original name i couldn't believe i didn't came across it before: DVDVIDEOSOFT's Free Youtube to Ipod. With direct links in the TLPD for the games, it was a piece of cake getting games downloaded and converted. And if given the youtube link, you can let it download for you.
Mayor drawback for DVDVIDEOSOFT is that it only supports MP4. The fact that it only converts youtube videos it's a feature IMO.
Conclusion
Comparing Videora to DVDVIDEOSOFT, Videora has better options for compression (and if the paid version should be even much more superior) while DVDVIDEOSOFT is a much more practical to use it at work and while having other programs working.
Given that now youtube is the biggest source for vods and almost all other videos worth watching (series, other video games vods, etc) it's the weapon of choice to make my routine travels more entertaining. So, instead of waisting time at work with any youtube thread, i just let save it for later, update my ipod before leaving and make the most out of my time.
PS: the ironic part is that i'm finishing attending university this week and have a lot more free time. Though, i'll have to study for final exams...
edit: a link and just that this are my experience with the free software i came across for ipod videos, if you know of other and better soft, shoot!
