My first blog is about Physics... i feel like such a dork. Anyways, i am totally stumped on this one problem. I have the general gist of it, but i cant figure out the difference between a C12 and C14 carbon ions. I'm pretty sure they are both +1 in charge but i believe the masses are different.

On a side note, how do you calculate the velocity final of similar charged ions going through two capacitor plates with a potential difference of 1000v?

Damn this Physics E&M class is kickin my ass, can anyone help a brotha out? For the glory of the overmind/Aiur....

add 2 neutrons or whatnot

C12 and C14 means the total number of particles composing the nucleus. Since they're both carbon, the number of protons is the same, so they have 2 neutrons difference. The charge difference beetween non-ionized atoms, therefore, doesn't exist. The difference in mass is 2x neutron mass. The difference in charge is the difference between the number of times each atom had been ionized (i.e. how many electrons it is missing). The mass difference based on loss of electron mass is neglible because electron's mass is only around 500 KeV, while hardons top 900 MeV in mass.

Figure how much times each of your atoms had been ionized. The difference between their behavior in the capacitor is obviously because of the mass difference and difference in inertia. As much as I'd love it, I'm not gonna provide you with formulae, learn to work plz.

This is chemistry.
C 12 and C 14 are isotopes, they have the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons, 2 in this case.

Well ok the second part is probably Physics.

rofl, this is chemistry you newb

And yes, what BluzMan said, the difference in the numbers is because of the total number of particles in the atom-core

Assuming particle initially at rest:

Kinetic energy = Work done by the plates
(1/2) x (M) x (v^2) = V x Q

where
M = Mass of particle
v = Final velocity of particle (since initial velocity is 0)
V = Voltage
Q = charge of particle

Link what I said here to what BluzMan said about finding the charge and the mass and you'll find your answer. I have a feeling this is a homework thread disguised as a blog. Lol.
