Yeah, I have a really big problem ever since I was a kid. I used to bite my nails, but several years ago I gave up that "phase" and began chewing on the skin around the nail. Disgusting? Yes. But I can't help it.

Does anybody have this same experience as I do, but were able to cure this? I'm seriously sick of looking at fucking deformed ends of fingers because I keep biting the shit out of them.

I'd post a picture but then everybody would like turn to stone lol

put something gross tasting on your nails and psychologically you won't wanna bite your nails after tasting that stuff a few times

I now bite the skin above my nails. It went from biting my nails to the point where they hurt to biting the skin around the nails to the point where it BLED and now it's just biting the skin above the nails... and for some reason, I only do it a few times.

I've almost broken the habit! :D

I'm actually so skilled at biting my nails that I never need to cut them anymore. They look perfectly well trimmed as well. You just need to work at it more until you've perfected the art.

i used to have this problem in elementary school, i'd bite my nails and the cuticles and stuff but i just grew out of it

i think i stopped when i started guitar and i needed to start taking care of my hands. i read somewhere this is a really widespread bad habit and a good way to get rid of it is to do what yogurt suggested. nail polish, paint, dirt, soap all work.

Yeah I sometimes get sick at how bad my teeth trim that shit and I instead use a nail clipper to make it look nicer -_-;;;

Same thing happens to me; I bleed like a mofo lol

Anybody have a specific technique apart from putting something nasty on it?

I mean, I've been chewing gum all day to keep my mouth busy, but it still doesn't stop me sometimes. I think a good method is just to distract my mouth or something?

Maybe I'll ask my girlfriend to like make out with me forever or something so my fingers won't go anywhere near my mouth -_-

Pick up another nervous habit, like cracking your knuckles or something. Well thats not the best idea...

Man i don't get the whole nail biting thing; i've never done it. I did try it, but nothing seemed to be happening to my nails

I have a tendency to put my pen in my mouth while I'm thinking, but I've managed to reduce the occurrences tremendously by pulling it out of my mouth the moment I noticed I was putting it in over and over again. It's a slow transition but you should be able to do it if you keep at it.

Nothing's ever really broken the habit for me. As I've gotten older and less stressed I've stopped doing it more and more. But sometimes when I'm nervous I'll do it without realizing.

I know what you're talking about. I really notice it when I get out of the shower and the area around the nail is all messed up. When I catch myself doing it I make a conscious decision to stop, but quitting completely I haven't done yet.

Dip your fingers in Tabasco sauce. Problem solved. If that's too gross for you, think about how gross what you're doing right now is, and it won't bother you that much. Or think about the fact that people will look at your weird if you're gnawing on your fingers. Another possibility is to place this bad habit, with a good habit.
