www.gamblersanonymous.org

That probably has more on gambling than those 3 bible links.

According to your bible quotation RH, then if you are playing for the thrill its cool, but if you are playing for cold hard cash, then thats not cool.

Just out of curiosity - so are the good and bad gamers separated into different kind of leagues - so say if you won a large sum of money, it'd probably be off someone who wins that much every now and then anyway so it wouldn't be so relatively bad for them?

ahh, thanks - i missed that part

Proverbs 16:33 says, if you are playing for the thrill its cool, but if you are playing for cold hard cash, then thats not cool. “The lot is cast in the lap, but its every decision is from the Lord.” Nowhere in the Bible is gambling or "chance" used for entertainment or presented as an acceptable practice for followers of God.

poker is a skill game as well as a game of chance (long term skill/short term chance)

definitely don't play the game if you do not plan on winning money because you'll only end up a degenerate gambler and lose money before you quit it altogether (it will affect your life negatively)

no the good players and bad players are not separated, and you have no way of knowing if the person you win money from is fine/hurt financially by it - poker players run the gamut from good, winning players, break-even players, random fish, and degen retard gamblers

if you're playing just for the fun / thrill of it, just stick to playing for playchips (fake money)

no comment on whether it's a sin or not

Is gambling a sin? --> Is it ethical to gamble? .. the latter is a harder to answer and the former is a little easier to answer, but not by much. These kinds of questions probably have no good answer if one does not narrow the group to which they might apply. They are classic debating questions; if people remain civil, should end up as a good thread.

Not only is gambling a sin, but so is playing guitar and diablo II. In fact, most fun things turn out to be sins. Your best bet for avoiding sin, entertainment-wise, is to read the bible for the stories. If you need a hobby, take up caligraphy and hand letter signs that tell blasphemers and heathens that they're going to hell (no drawings though... graven images and all that). And for God's sake, stop masturbating!

I think this is a very tough subject matter that really is just dependent on your interpretation of the bible and how you are willing to justify what you can do.

I for one have had to really think about this lately. My grandfather has played poker since he was 18/19 yrs old. In the last couple years he lost his job and turned to playing poker as a means of living. More recently he decided to get a dealer job because of his love for the boat and gambling overall. He has never been one to lose his house on gambling, he always knows when to walk away.

However, my uncle, who is a preacher and a total extremist has decided that my grandfather is now no longer allowed to see my cousins and such because of the job that he holds. He says that it is a sin and not one that should be kept.

I personally think that this is total bullshit, but of course my religion has faltered and I do not practice on an everyday basis. However, this is only my interpretation. Each to their own I suppose. I think in your own ways you will just have to learn to either justify it or decide not to do it.

In my recent thoughts, I have questioned religion and things of that quite immensely. I think that it should aid you in your life and be used to make that what we have be that much better. I don't think however that you should allow for it to hinder your everyday life. Is that to say that if you don't play poker that you will never be whole? Not exactly, but you do have an opportunity to try something new that might bring you enjoyment. What you are doing is not harming anyone (as long as you don't get to far into it and lose a lot of money). It isn't breaking the law (I assume).

Enough rambling. . . it comes down to personal choice.

I'd say that games of skill (poker qualifies, imo) with gambling aspects are acceptable. Gambling on the flip of a coin or the roll of a die are not. Perhaps I am biased, as I consider myself to be an amateur game theorist (i.e. I play poker), but as long as you display proper bankroll management, poker should never ruin your life, and should not be classified as a sin.

The only time it becomes a sin is when it becomes an addiction; something that you place higher than God.

In addition, if playing poker displays the attitude to other people that gambling is acceptable (amisconception many people are capable of making), then playing poker becomes ill-adivsed, at least if you're professing your belief at the table.

By the way, thumbs up on your new attitude at TL.

It's really not so different from any other competitive aspect of life, is it?

Would you feel bad that you won vs someone in a qualifier for some tournament (in whatever sport/game)? He might have invested alot into this and might lose a lot of money as a result of you beating him (let's use starcraft as an example: when you beat someone in the semi-pro license tournament, it means he won't be able to get picked up by a pro team and recieve a salary but will have to keep on waiting for another month.. should you feel bad?).

Or if you beat someone in the yearly Go professional exams, you might crush his or her dreams of going pro (especially brutal here as I believe several of these tests have an upper age limit..). Yes, I realize these are not exactly everyday examples but I'm interested in both these 'sports' so I choose them to demonstrate my point =]

Would you feel bad that you got the job you were applying for over everyone else, simply because you were more qualified/got lucky?

I dunno, I don't think you can function as a human being in our society without being able to deal with these things as they are inherent to pretty much every competitive aspect of life - someone has to lose. And in some cases, losing has serious consequences.

In the end, they choose to play poker, just as you did. It's no more your fault that they go broke than it is your fault that you got the job due to higher qualifications IMO. Maybe them not getting the job will lead to them losing their house and family, you can't know that and you can't feel responsible for it or you'll go insane.

My take on wether poker is ethical or not, I doubt you were after a logical response however, as religion doesn't seem to be big on that in these cases
