Reading your story brought back a lot of memories of my own life. To comment on yours first I do agree that teenage anxiety in females is a huge problem. There is so much pressure on these girls to look / act a certain way and I for one am glad I am a male.

My fiancee never got caught up in those types of pills but had a strong addiction to diet pills. She took them like they are candy and I for one am surprised she didn't die of a heart attack.

We met our junior year and she had just gotten out of another 4 year relationship about the same time I moved into town. We didn't even know each other existed for about the 6 months but then we met and blah blah blah. Fastforward to about half a year later and I start learning of her body image issues and her obsession with diet pills. She ended up having to be committed for anorexic behaviors for about a month and I got to visit her on and off.

When we came to college I hoped that that part of her life was at least subdued enough so that we could continue a normal life style but I was totally wrong. She did leave the diet pills alone for the most part but still faced the severe mental issues that went along with being partially anorexic and having very low self esteem. Worst of all, she didn't believe in psychiatrists and wouldn't even consider going to see a doctor for what she was dealing with.

She tried to commit suicide a couple different times over our first 2 years of college. One luckily she had no clue what she was doing. She is such a small girl that half a vicodin knocks her out, so she tried to take three to kill herself. I woke up next to her to find her crying and her kissing on me and telling me she loved me and she was sorry and that she just didn't want to be here any more. I knew something was off from the moment I was woken up but didn't know exactly what was going on until I counted her pills. Her miscalculation plus the fact that she didn't want me to find out what she was doing kind of helped her in round one. However whenever I called the campus paramedics about it she told me she hated me and that she wasn't going to tell the truth. They let her off cause all of her signs were normal and started questioning me as to if I had been drinking etc. After that she didn't even let me go back to her room with her because she said we were over.

The next time I showed up to her door to find that she had taken countless amounts of aspirin. I immediately made her go vomit and I called down to the complex director of the dorm. I for one knew that I was in no position to deal with this type of problem. The complex director immediately called the paramedics and she was taken to the hospital again. Once again she hated me and wanted nothing to do with me, but she got over that one too.

The last time was when she weighed herself earlier that day and the scale said she weighed 120 lbs. That night she had a severe break down and I did so many different things to try to talk to her. She also asked me over and over again if I could just kill her and of course I told her no. We tried to go for a walk but only made it less than a quarter mile in an hour and a half. I finally got tired of dealing with it and called the campus paramedics again. They took her overnight to the emergency room and kept her and told her she had to get counseling. She went maybe 1-2 times and then stopped going.

So, she's been locked away for a month, tried to commit suicide 2 times, wanted me to kill her another one. Tried to go to counseling but never stuck it out. I'm glad that not taking her to the hospital worked out for you flaccid, but I know that I wasn't going to be taken any chances.

Regardless, she is doing better now and is actually even starting to build confidence. You want to know what did the trick, what worked for her? Breast implants...but thats a different story time.

So basically this amazing girl that was so awesome, you decided that when she was totally fucked and trying to fuck everything up not to take her to the hospital yourself, then you decided you'd kind of ditch her, and then you blamed her for being pissed at you. I mean you cared so much about her you didn't even ask about how her prescription came about or anything, you simply blindly assume some stereotypical crap about how a young doctor blithely prescribed these terrible pills to a young girl. Of course if you didn't notice anything then there couldn't have been anything there.

i almost sent my overly (to me anyway) anxious and worrysome (spelling?) ex g/f to the psych guys a few years ago. she was so nervous all the time that i thought she needed help. and she kept telling me she wanted to go to the doctor. but everytime she brought it up to her parents, they just blew it off. i told her that if she really thought she had depression or an anxiety disorder, to just GO. after hearing this, im kinda glad she never did. granted, shes still pretty crazy, but i think pills would make her worse.

Wow. That really sucks. Stories where people are sent off to the shrinks never end any good. :/

And again, some story out of somebody's life gives me a whole new way of looking at the person telling it and several other things.

Drugs/Antidepressants don't cure depression. They just cover it up while the person taking them is still under their effect. Then the person goes back to the depressed state. Those drugs don't work. Period. They cover up the problem, making it seem like it's not there, but once you're off medication, you're now in a worsened state. They don't cure the core of the problem. It's like if a baby is crying because he's hungry, and you "solve" the problem by ducktaping the baby's mouth shut. Sure, you can't hear the crying anymore, but the problem is still there. The solution is to feed the baby.

Or maybe I'm just depressed....

Great story. Thank you for sharing it. I'm sorry to hear about it, though, as that must have been incredibly difficult at the time.

This is the main reason why I dislike psychiatry. Some of my psychology professors (I'm a psychology major) have said the same thing. Psychiatry offers a cookie cutter solution for a wide variety of problems, all of which can, and usually do fall under the same category.

What I mean is that, depression, for example, could be the result of a chemical imbalance. This itself could be caused by a multitude of things. Or maybe it's caused by genetics, or heredity. Or maybe it's caused by adolescent anxiety due to social and peer pressure. Or maybe....

ieatkids5 is partially correct. Psychiatric drugs do not, in most cases, correct the problem. What they do, instead is alleviate the symptoms of the problem. Is this bad? Not really, I think. It improves your quality of life. It allows you to operate normally, and get through your day without breaking down, becoming overwhelmed, or any other multitude of negative side affects of having some kind of mental or emotional disorder.

I know that it's a common criticism of psychiatry, but that's what all medications and prescriptions drugs usually do. If you have a cold, you take medicine to alleviate the symptoms and help your body fight the cold. It doesn't instantly make you better; it improves your quality of life.

I sincerely hope your ex is doing better. Unfortunately, suicide is a horrible topic. I won't go into it too much, but often that type of problem never completely goes away.
