Well, here's what I've been doing the last week or so. My friend told me that if I learned how to play each of the races (the basics) I would slowly learn the more advanced strategies and be able to discuss them. So, I have slowed my commentary production and am trying to play more. I will still be making some, just not as much. I still want to keep the enthusiasm that I have, I just will also want to add in some analysis.
If by any chance I was commentating to newbies, I would just revert to what I have now.
Over the summer, I am going to China, which is very close to Korea. Doing live shoutcasts should be relatively easy then, because I won't have to do them in the night. I will be in China for 2 months, and planning to bring all my equipment (microphone... broodwar... uh... and download the other crap I use)
So, I hope this combination of more playing and less talking will help me further improve my commentary. I know a lot more about zerg than any of the other races, so I suppose this will be the best route. Just like in the Korean commentators, lots of them were programers before they started commentating.

I definitely agree that playing more is essential towards improving the analysis in your commentaries. Unfortunately, all it takes is one incorrect comment for a commentary to get criticized. I'm not sure what level of play you should aim for.

personally i find it amazing you wanted to commentate without really playing at all
it's pretty difficult to commentate without knowing the matchups from playing a lot
