I never thought I could be so apathetic and unenthusiastic about a Star Wars trailer, but here we are.
These are my thoughts about Episode IX's trailer. Dumb name, unoriginal premise, generally unenthusastic about all of it.

Did Vince Mcmahon let Hulk Hogan, Bruno Sammartino, or Stone Cold Steve Austen lose badly? NEVER. You give the people what they want. And the people want their heroes to be strong, noble and courageous. This is how you build a hero.... At the WWF's signature event, Wrestlemania, the main event would star Hulk Hogan or Steve Austen. They'd always win. They would struggle, endure suffering, have to beat long odds... and in the end... they'd win.. and they'd win big. Do you know how many Stone Cold Steve Austen t-shirts the WWF Sold? Hulk Hogan Shirts in the 1980s? Vince Mcmahon took his old man's failing business in 1982 and turned it into a billion dollar money making machine because he developed heroes properly. Are there people who want to see Luke Skywalker lose.. and die a total failure? sure there are. The problem is these people won't spend money. They won't buy the over-priced Merchandise... they won't buy the over priced replica figurines. They won't buy a video game that allows them to re-live Luke Skywalker's journey to total failure and abject loser-dom. On the other hand, the fans who want to see Luke Skywalker overcome long odds and win ... those fans will spend money ..They will buy the Merch, the Toys, the video games, and the comics. They will spend so much money you can build a $4 Billion empire on those fans. George Lucas painstakingly crafted a hero's journey. And monetized it for every last nickel. I have no clue what Disney thinks they are doing. I'm not sure Disney themselves knows what they are doing.

this is the first of the sequel trilogy trailers that i've ever watched... I think Lucasfilms knows they are slowly losing guys like you who love Star Wars... and Lucasfilms doesn't know what to do about it. I think the general advice you give in your video is a plausible path to redemption. Leadership is so scared they don't know what to believe though. Furthermore, I don't know if the financial arm of Disney will allow them to take a 10 year break from making giant-profit large-scale movies. This Kathleen Kennedy interview is revealing ... in just how non-committal she is about so much of Star Wars future. twitter.com On April 20 2019 10:03 JimmiC wrote: + Show Spoiler + How you can crow bar the wwf into anything is quite amazing. Pmease stop glorifying him especially in threads completely unrelated to wrasslin. To not further derail. Then don't derail it and stick to the topic. By picking a different art form unrelated to big budget movies I am illustrating the money making power of building a strong hero set wiithin an epic universe aimed at a general audience. Its a universal formula for multi-billion dollar success. Both Mcmahon and Lucas did a great job in this area and profited accordingly. Both guys built their massive money making empires from almost nothing. Disney's hero building in Star Wars is poor. Its wrecking the franchise's #1 profit source. Iger acknowledged this when he announced Disney is steering away from the big budget movie.

To not further derail. + Show Spoiler + Vince McMahon has paid for dozens and dozens of stints in drug/alcohol rehab for wrestlers, including for wrestlers years after they stopped working for him. He paid for people like Brutus Beefcake's very expensive surgeries and physical rehab after horrible accidents that had nothing to do with wrestling. He paid Beefcake to basically be Hulk Hogan's travel companion while he was recovering so Beefcake would have an income when he was unable to do any kind of real job, wrestling or not, at all. He gave guys like Jim Neidhart and the British Bulldog chance after chance after chance to work when they'd repeatedly got into deep holes with drugs and been fired for not showing up or because they were unable to perform because they were so trashed. After years of Jeff Hardy struggling in multiple wrestling companies with drugs and booze, Vince brought him back and didn't fire him or anything when Jeff was arrested for DUI last year. Still on the payroll, still on TV. He's never fired or punished a guy for having to take off work because of a family emergency. Vince McMahon is a lot more complicated than you're saying and yes he is a genius businessman and entertainment promoter. There's a lot of white to go with the gray and the black and there's a lot of gray and black too when it comes to him. There's hundreds of examples of him being a good guy alongside the hundreds of examples of him being a dickbag.

Luke Skywalker is a typical example of problems you get when you do sequels to fantasy stories. If your old main character/power fantasy is around, you've got to cripple him somehow to stop him from solo-ing the BBE better than your main cast could. The normal solutions are age, traps, going rogue, betrayals, sometimes overconfidence with Luke arguably falling to the latter two. Half of the problems with the Luke Skywalker arc in SW8 are that people expected him to be a perfect human because he stood at the peak of a hero's journey/Bildungsroman at the end of 6. Luke isn't the hero of the sequels though, he's the hero of the OT, which means that they have to write him out of the story in the sequels or disempower him enough that he becomes a very minor factor similar to Yoda and Obi Wan in the OT f.e..

Disney/Lucasfilm has done a lousy job of hero building with the last few movies. This while also doing a poor job transitioning Luke Skywalker into the background grandfatherly type role. Han Solo was killed and Carrie Fisher is dead IRL so Disney has an uphill climb from here.

Its up to Disney/Lucasfilm to do the same thing with teh Star Wars franchise. So far, they are failing. The new set of Disney/Lucasfilm hero action figures are languishing in shit-hole discount warehouse Malls for 10% of their original price. How many video game players want to be one of the heroes in the new trilogy in a video game? Even if they wanted ... which they don't .. but if they did.... it doesn't matter because Disney/Lucasfilm has fucked the video game franchise into the ground. Its pretty hilarious watching Disney hide all their Star Wars merchandising #s. They can't hide their revenue from video games though.. because there is nothing to hide.

So, he created and then slowly developed Dwayne Johnson and Steve Austen into larger than life heroes or anti-heroes. He used Bollea and Sammartino to pass the torch to JOhnson and Austen. While doing this Mcmahon had the tricky task of keeping the italian working class interested in wrestling. They formed the foundation of his customer base. He had to do this while removing his #1 italian from the championship title mix. The process took a few years and eventually Johnson and Austen exceeded everything Bollea and Sammartino did in the past. Its up to Disney/Lucasfilm to do the same thing with teh Star Wars franchise. Those action figures aren't selling because the characters behind them are terrible. I'm sorry I missed/ignored the latter part of this thread's conversation because it was actually very great, it started off lousy (see the above two banned posts) so I kind of just forgot about it. The thing is, I think it's just becoming increasingly clear that the people at LucasFilm just don't know what they're doing outside of Dave Filoni. He seems to be the only one that consistently understands what Star Wars is and how to tell the story right, which is why I said that I want the Mandalorian to be good. If Mandalorian is good, that would make him 3 for 3 with hits on the smaller screen for Star Wars while everything else LucasFilm has put out including that Resistance show that I don't give a shit about, flops badly. (besides Rogue One which is starting to look more and more like a fluke occurrence) It just doesn't make sense WHY they wouldn't put Dave higher up after all of this mess. It doesn't make sense why he gets relegated to small screen material while Rian Johnson supposedly (and I still doubt it's actually gonna happen) gets a new movie trilogy. It screams arrogance and complete disconnect with the fanbase.
