Hi everyone,
As many of you may or may not know, I lead the BW team on Teamliquid, and have done so for almost 3 years now. I make the final decision regarding what gets covered and how, as well as take care of formatting, editing, covering, and writing standalone articles. I also take care of a lot of miscellaneous tasks that only a few are aware of. Essentially, it's my job to manage the team, make sure things go out on time, and that our coverage continues as smoothly as possible.
Looking back at all the years as BW editor-in-chief, I'm pretty proud of what we've managed to accomplish for such a hardcore community. Even during dire times, every BW staff member has kept giving it their all. We've managed to keep our coverage quality high, and we have even increased our output, covering 2 tournaments simultaneously while providing other articles such as a power rank, map analysis, and interviews. I've also personally sacrificed sleep, and a lot of time for a game that I'm madly in love with, but it's not something that I've ever regretted either. Nothing beats the feeling of knowing that you are helping keep a community going with your work.
However, this is the reason I write to you today. Come 2019, I have decided to step down from my role as EiC, aka retire due to other obligations. I have thought long and hard about this before making this decision. With ASL currently on hiatus, and the prospect of some top BW players leaving to the military sooner than later, the timing was right for my exit. In my stead, we can hopefully get someone who's even more motivated, and can provide more content for the community. At this point, I have also started to identify with my online id which is both interesting and bizzare haha. The last tournament that I will lead coverage on will be KSL2, which is currently in the Ro16, and has had good games. Hopefully, Last manages to win this one too in order to validate my last article!
There may be another article or two in the works, so if you're someone who appreciates these articles, look forward to reading them one last time. I haven't decided what I'll be doing afterwards, and may just fade into the shadows as I once did. Maybe I'll give casting a try for the fun of it, but my days of leading staff, and potentially writing, will be over.
I will write one more blog on this closer to the actual quitting date. With all that said, thanks for the good memories everyone.
BW fighting! ~

Thank you for all the effort and time you have put in BigFan, people like you are what keep BW alive for me. I don't personally know anyone from my country who is still interested in our beloved 20 year old game, and here is where I come to join the community of like-minded people

Thanks for all the work you've put into Brood War on TL BigFan. Hopefully, the next EiC is as motivated as you were for Brood War.

Your contribution to the Teamliquid Starcraft community has and will continue to be appreciated. Thank you.

Yeah, thanks boss. All contributions to Teamliquid or Broodwar are appreciated no matter how small and your contribution could not be described as such.
Good luck with the things that are now filling your time.

Thank you BigFan. For everything.

i'm not even a massive Brood War fan any longer, and, in spite of that, i think the coverage you and your team provides is great.

To be fair, I never read much of your articles, mostly because the topics didn't interest me too much. However, the few things I did read seemed to be top quality, so you did an excellent job. Besides that you seemed like a fair and very polite person overall, so I'd hope you still stick around the community and not only TL. That being said, sad to hear someone stops (has to stop due to RL?) doing good things. For your time, thanks, for you supporting others thanks even more.

Wow 3 years already, time flies. Thank you for your contribution, much appreciated, see you around!

Thanks for all the nice comments. TL community best community!
Currently working hard to find a cool capable replacement who will keep things moving forward. This shouldn't really affect how things get done, hopefully, so you guys can keep expecting the same great quality as always

A lot of people probably don't realize that I have been one of the most active mods in the last 2 years, alongside Seeker as well on top of the other stuff. I'm going to try and stay active, post in some discussions or LR, maybe cast some games if I can, etc... but it may also be somewhat difficult having gone so all-in with BW for the last 4+ years. So, it's mostly a wait and see how things pan out approach.

This was slightly depressing to read.
The game has always thrived on the passion of its fans. I am grateful that contributors like yourself exist, providing invaluable coverage especially in the current age of streaming. In other words, good job and thank you for your efforts.

Sorry, but there wasn't any other way to put it unfortunately. I only made this statement because there was a lot of rumours about Jaedong going to the military back even during the ASL4 days, and there was a comment made by the commentator after Flash's defeat in ASL6 about his heath condition, and military service coming up. From that perspective, I can easily see Flash decide to go after ASL7, but I'm not really sure what's keeping Jaedong tbh considering his health conditions, and the fact that KSL was his last serious run imo.

I do feel a sense of pride for what we've managed to accomplish. It also feels just really odd, you know. Feels like I lost, or I'm about to lose something important. TL and BW coverage has been a part of my daily routine for close to half a decade now, so the idea of stepping back still hasn't fully sunk in yet. Probably will once the next tournament starts and I'm no longer trying to keep things flowing anymore. I just hope that whoever takes over doesn't feel overwhelmed, and doesn't try to push as much as I did.

That's exactly why you keep losing and keep losing important battles, you don't keep your macro flowing and you routinely push out with small armies and go for sunken busts unnecessarily, and in the end you get overwhelmed the zerg army. There's nothing odd about that!
Also, I've got some breaking news from the hot sheets! https://www.teamliquid.net/blogs/539743-the-real-reason-why-bigfan-retired

I would say the nature of the beast is to push though, and that is part of what it makes it so satisfying. Steering the ship is a challenge, and it is rewarding, but at some point everyone realizes that there is a shelf life to it. It took me a while after I stepped back to really let that sink in.
Personally I felt a lot of guilt after I stopped being a regular contributor, so if I have any advice for you it is to take pride in what you have accomplished. It is great if you can help find the next person to continue, but once you tell yourself you are done, don't beat yourself up if you feel like you should be "doing" something.
edit: Except for Plexa, he isn't human. He is a machine.

He is a machine. Yes, of course, but I also feel like there's a limit to just how much you can push. For instance, I don't know Korean, but if I did, I could've tried doing interviews personally, or at least translated relevant Korean posts/information for the community. Instead, I have to write up questions, and rely on a translator to get answers. That creates an additional barrier whereby I can't push any further. This also means that I can't push out content as much because I need to wait to see if we even got the interview. Not to mention that I need gfx so I have to wait to get those, and find time to put it altogether etc..
On top of that, I also had to take care of other stuff like helping with social media, or keeping track of compensation etc.. The best thing that could be done was to keep coverage going and write articles to keep people interested or get some new members especially with RM release. The steering was a challenge indeed, but it's been fun and I have no regrets about my time on TL or what we've managed to accomplish.
I'll probably feel a bit of guilt too, but it took a while to decide on this, so my resolve is there. Hopefully it holds up when push comes to shove. Yes, I'm helping to find the next person to continue, and hopefully we'll have someone capable sooner than later. I think at this point, the best I could hope for is to write an article or two a year when I manage to find some time so that I'm still 'contributing', but it's not something that's sucking as much time. Seeing as the military calls for several players like Flash or Jaedong, a farewell article feels like a must (ex: https://www.teamliquid.net/forum/brood-war/536265-hero-farewell-to-a-consistently-great-zerg).
Edit: haha ya, I hear you. Plexa is a machine indeed
