I played the original Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney a few years ago, got to case 1-5 and gave up around the beginning because I was getting bored of it. Don't know wtf was wrong with me at the time, but I went back and replayed it, and I'd count it as one of the greatest games of all time. I'm just about to finish the third game and I have nothing but explosive praise for it.
The original trilogy ported to 3DS, as well as the two newest 3DS games, are on sale for a few more hours on Nintendo's website, don't miss them: http://www.nintendo.com/games/sales-and-deals
For those unaware, in this game you play as a defense attorney who needs to vindicate their client mid-trial, by finding contradictions in the prosecution's witnesses/evidence. It's essentially a visual novel with logic puzzles. Also, an absolutely mind-blowing OST, on the same level as Chrono Trigger's.

Is the iOS and Android game any good from your view as a fan? I will get around to getting a 3DS someday, but that isn't really in the cards right now. I have seen it in the store and thought about picking it up, but I wasn't sure if it was any good.

Couldn't tell you, haven't tried them unfortunately. Might be better to lawfully buy them in some way and then emulate them on a PC.

I remember this being one of my first games on the DS and having a blast, though I did get stuck at one place and had to consult a faq for finding the next story trigger.
The jokes and references that the English translators added were funny (we probably wouldn't have gotten the original jokes anyway, the Japanese love their play on words). Plus, you get some pretty funny responses from the prosecutor and judge if you get something wrong during a court session in the later games (Godot telling you to "Suck it down!" while downing coffee, and the judge following up with "You will suck down this penalty! And you will like it!")
Might also want to check out Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective, made by the same people. I liked that one as well, don't forget to replace the bullet with something big and watch the ensuing hilarity.

Awesome games! And the music! Nerd chills!
I played 1 and 2. I borrowed 3 from a friend, but accidentally got his save games as well, so I played the final case without realising it was the finale. Bit of a bummer.
+ Show Spoiler +Remember your friend in the game, Larry Butz? "Whenever something smells, it's usually the Butz"
ROFL

Like the metal hat :D
On that note, Ghost Trick is a fantastic puzzle game with a really cool story and execution.

but have you played the edgeworth spinoff games though?
they're pretty good especially the second one, unfortunately it was never released in the west so you'd have to get the fan translated one.

I've finished all the games but I think the original trilogy was quite a bit better. The last two games, while have added a lot of new great quality of life improvements, don't quite have the big impact that the original trilogy did and I think it's gotten rather corny to be honest. I think the 5th case of the 1st game was probably the best single arc in the whole series but overall, I think the 3rd game was the best in terms of overall arc. Just super well crafted.

You start off just trying to get your bearings straight, but stuff start to get crazy pretty fast as you progress through the story. The last chapters were epic.
I think I might just play the game again, it's like rereading a book that you've really enjoyed and remember fondly.

So the canonical order you're supposed to play the games is:
Ace Attorney -> Justice for All -> Trials & Tribulations -> Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright -> AA Investigations -> AA Investigations 2 -> Apollo Justice -> Dual Destinies -> Spirit of Justice
I'm just finish T&T today, so I'll play AAI after that. And yeah, I'm aware of the fan patch for AAI2.

btw you can play it on Andriod using an emulator like nds4driod and by loading in the images, like I did.
I absolutely love it too!
Send me a PM if you still need help making it work.
