Hello all,

I have a question about naruto fillers but before I get into that I would like to give a quick re-cap of my viewing history.

A few years back I used to work with someone who watched anime. We got talking about Avatar because I had just started watching it. My co-worker had finished it and told me they really liked it and mention that Naruto is even more amazing and said they were watching Naruto Shippuden and talked a bit about the original Naruto.

Anyways, I ended up watching to about episode 100 + Show Spoiler [Naruto Spoilers] +
before the naurto vs sasuke battle
and stopped. I remember going to a starcraft lan and a bunch of people mentioned they don't even watch the anime because of the fillers but read the manga. I, however would prefer to watch the anime but reading the manga is still a option

Its now years later and I'm restarting it. I've reached about episode 100. Now I know that episode 135 to 219 are fillers and I'm planning on watching Naruto Shippuden after which I'm aware has almost 200 filler episodes.

I'm aware of some of the plot by random reading online and being spoiled in some conversations like + Show Spoiler [Naruto Spoilers] +
Naruto fighting Sasuke. Sasuke going to Orchimoro and becoming a criminal
so should I avoid the fillers; do they add to the plot or are they generally a waste of time. I've heard most Naruto original series fillers are horrible and a lot of useless ones are in Naruto: Shippuden and only a few are recommend.

Teamliquid, what do you advise?

Just avoid the fillers, they are almost a complete waste of time in my opinion. I've watched Naruto for almost 10 years now and can only remember a handful of filler episodes and even those are barely worth watching. I just want the series to stop at this point, it isn't even that good.

I check www.fillerguide.com (some of the episode names can contain spoilers!) once in awhile to catch up on episodes so I don't have to check every week if the fillers have stopped.

I watched every single episode from both Naruto and Naruto Shippuden (including fillers). Most of the fillers are waste of time, but some of them are actually related to story (like flashbacks and similar). If you have time, watch them, if not, watch only main episodes.

Be warned that some Shippuuden episodes have small amounts of plot mixed into filler episodes...

I only read the manga after episode 150. The fillers are no good at all. I would skip them.
I would also prime your expectations that shippuden/latter half of naruto is not as good as the first 130 episodes of naruto.

If you enjoy Naruto, and are looking for something shorter but honestly amazing, watch FMA: Brotherhood. 64 episodes. Rated 9.1/10 on http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=10216
Make sure you watch brotherhood and not the older (just 'FMA') series which is non-canon.

There's a manga of Kakashi's past, and in Shipuuden (the post-timeskip story), there's another one which bridges that distant past to the events of the first arc.

After the Naruto franchise finished, the author also published some really cool side-stories, and side-acs.

There's a thing of Itachi's past which will also be cool (it's a novel right now, and will be in the anime in March). Some of the arcs are really nice, and some of them are kinda blah.

I'd recommend just reading the manga realistically, unless you like the fighting style/animation.

Thanks for all the replies

@kuresuti:
That is the website I was using to find out how many filters were in Naruto.

@micronesia:
I plan on using the above mentioned site to find out which fillers have some 'canon' content or not because it seems it will say 'some canon' even if its a filler episode.

@IntoTheHeart;
I'm really thinking of reading the manga but I do enjoy the fighting style and animation lol

@joshie0808:
Thanks for the recommendation. I will check it out.

I watched all the naruto episodes but way back in the day as it was running weekly still and stopped around half way through shippuuden to just read the manga instead.

I'd say just skip the fillers, the worst thing that would happen is you miss a 3 second non-plot relevant joke or reference. If you're in it for just naruto enjoyment, go for the fillers, if you're there for the story, just skip the fillers and move on.

The filler with ninja cooking one and the shippuden ones that pull in random side stories are decent but avoid the rest.

Some of the fillers are good, but most are bad unfortunately.

I recommend skipping any filler runs that last 8 episodes or longer. Some of the short filler runs are bad too of course, but you should be able to tell they are terrible in the first few minutes, or from the title, and skip them.

I'm currently waiting for the filler to end before I pick up the series again. *sigh* that could be months. At least the end is in sight now though. When Shippuuden is good though, it's really good.

I'm interested in watching Natuto after I finish samurai champloo, what do you mean by fillers?

Are there two versions of Naruto Original (220 episodes) & Shippuden (450+ episodes)?

Fillers are non-canon episodes. At some points when the anime has covered the story from the manga so far, they have to air filler episodes until the plot advances in the manga basically.

The Naruto plot continues in Naruto Shippuden, a few years after (in the universe that is) the ending of Naruto. You could say Shippuden is "Naruto season 2". If you're going to watch you will need to watch Naruto before you watch Naruto Shippuden.

I can´t really advise you to skip the filler episodes since I never watched Naruto. Main reason is that it´s heavily censored in Germany (Which is weird cause there was a time when Animes where Uncut in German TV a good example would be Ranma 1 1/2 with the nude scenes that were all shown and this was in afternoon hours) the second reason is that it´s one of these what I call "endless series".

I stopped watching endless series like Dragonball or One Piece (altough some One piece fillers at least have still a good amount of humour) because of these fillers. If there are 500 episodes and 300 or even more are fillers, it really is wasted time. That´s why I only watch Anime series that have the usual amount of episodes/seasons ( 13/ 24 / 56 episodes or 2-3 seasons). And i only buy complete boxes where all episodes/seasons are there so i can marathon them. Sure these have their fillers too but it´s not as bad as a series with 500 episodes (sidenote: my rule for endless series also counts for real series that have like 10 seasons where 6 of them are useless). The only longer series I watched when I started with Animes back in the day was Sailor Moon which has 200 episodes.

So I can only give you a general advice: If you really like the show: go on watch them and have fun, maybe you can skip a few filler episodes if you still want to watch some of them. But I would not watch them all cause it is wasted time that you could spend with other great Anime series/movies. And trust me there are a lot.
