All the photos of the crash. Our car and the other guys. It's double lanes on both sides of the road. I had just moved to the left lane because I saw some state troopers had already pulled over another vehicle up ahead. I was also slowing down because we had entered a really icey stretch of highway.
The other driver was, I believe, trying to pass another car? Or maybe he was just going too fast regardless... He was in the opposite lane, heading towards us when I saw him fishtailing. I checked to make sure my right side was cleared and I started heading into the right lane, not a quick turn because I didn't want to fishtail myself.
We might have made it if I had sped up instead but having slowed down prior, there was no where to go when the other vehicle went from fishtailing to a full spin. His front swung around and his passenger headlight area rammed right into my rear driver tire.
We spun into the embankment, I asked Anna if she was okay to get out of the car. She said yes. I didn't realize airbags released so much powder in the air, i thought maybe it was smoke. I had her get Luka. I got out to get Makeah but I couldn't. I climbed back in and took her out my door. After checking everyone for injuries or concussions. I ran to the other vehicle because nobody had emerged yet.
Just before I got there, the driver and his passenger emerged and they said they were okay. I let them know that at this time, I thought my family was okay too.
I had a firefighter double check everyone to be sure. I didn't get a photo but the inside of the car is crushed in right behind where Makeah was sitting. If the other car had hit her door instead the wheel..... I don't know. It could have been really bad.
We did end up taking Anna to the ER to make sure she was okay. Her arm was hurting pretty bad afterwards. Doc cleared her with bruises and sprains.
The kids both have some bruises on their necks/heads from being tossed around a bit but no concussions or anything like that. They are pretty sore but acting normal so far.
So yeah. That was my first major car crash. I've had some fender benders but nothing like this. It was scary.
If the crash had happened in another half mile, we would have taken out about 5+ people including the State Troopers that had already pulled another vehicle over.

Oh wow, glad to hear everyone is safe. You guys might experience a bit of shock/delayed backlash as a result, so, just a heads up. That's a pretty nasty hit though. The bumper is completely crushed...

Glad all of you are okay!! Been in a few myself and that airbag dust smell always shocks me. Yeah, don't be surprised to feel it more tomorrow.

I'm glad everybody's fine. Hope I won't go through that.

You know, I narrowly avoided what would have been a serious head-on collision this weekend myself. Car came full speed round the bend at midnight and veered into my lane. The driver was probably drunk and had little control over his car at that speed. I swerved off the road into a ditch and he missed my car so narrowly. So yeah, I've spent the last 48 hours rather afraid of getting back on the road. It isn't nice. I'm sorry yours involved actual damage, but glad you guys are alright.

Thanks for the well wishes everyone.
Everybody is pretty sore, especially this morning, but we're alive and recovering.

Glad to hear nobody was seriously injured, go do something with the family and count your blessings !

Scary. Glad no one was seriously hurt. Driving is going to feel weird for a while, I was paranoid anytime I got onto a highway for a couple weeks after I had an accident a few years ago.

Woah dude :O
Cars are fun to drive, but oh god how I hate having to trust others around me in such a dangerous situation.
Glad you are okay man, really!

Two things i remember from my two car wrecks: 1.) They are FUCKING loud 2.) If you are able to see them about to happen, time really does seem to slow a bit. Heightened perception and all that. I remember distinctly having enough time to say to myself "this is gonna suck" and then experience it both times.
Rear ended while stopped once (the guy was a piece of work, going some estimated 60-70 in a 35mph school zone and hit a signalling, stationary vehicle in his own lane...) and the other I was being dumb as teenagers are apt to be and went off the road into a telephone pole.
Sounds like everybody is more or less ok less some pain/discomfort at least, so that's good. I don't know if it applies to this scenario with anybody involved but generally I've found from personal experience that lane changes are really bad ideas during inclement weather conditions on the highway. Traffic on the road tends to keep the running tracks of their collective tires cleaner than the rest of the lane, which can cause loss of traction when moving out of these "ruts" and crossing the collected ice/slush/whatever. Though it seems like you were doing all you could for safety's sake on your end, it may have happened to the other guy.

Only been in one serious car accident thankfully. Also noticed the same thing with the air bags and dust/powder it releases. Tried to pull out in a shitty blind spot leaving my community college years ago where someone was speeding and just ran into me, no brakes nothing. Lucky it hit where the tire was and not the door, I remember looking afterwards and being thankful for that, if I had gotten hit where my door was I wouldn't have been walking out most likely.
Also remember the whiplash being bad. My whole body was sore for days afterwards, pretty freaky. Thankfully you and everyone else seems to be ok besides some minor injuries. Nobody got seriously hurt/killed and that is by far the most important thing.

My daughter is still experiencing some trauma from the event. She was asleep when it occurred so she's been having night terrors and very high anxiety in the rental car coming home and taking her to doctor visits. Slapping herself or banging her head into the car seat/window. Throwing up due to the anxiety of being in the car, etc. We may have to take her to a behavior specialist to help her cope if the at home therapy they told me to do does not work.
My son is happy as a clam now, he was sore for awhile. My wife and I are still pretty sore, my lower back has been hurting quite abit. I'll probably go see a chiropractor but yes, we're all alive and getting better.
