B- has been a goal/rank that has always been elusive for me. I've got C+ before, in fact, I even made a blog post about it on TL.Net long time ago--> www.teamliquid.net

However, I've always stopped at C+ and never progressed past that. I've always had the intention to mass game and get B- but have never found the time or just quit after a bunch of frustrating losses. This time is different. This week is different. I've been waiting for Fighting Spirit to be Map of the Week on ICCup.

I've been playing on two iccup accounts.

iccup.com
iccup.com

I'm going to start playing again on sGs.Yaqoob and play as much as possible till I get B-. I'm not a cheesy player and I usually play standard so I will be doing standard Protoss builds and might switch it up if I'm not high C+ by Sunday.

Why is B- so important to me? I've played Starcraft for a decent time. I guess 8-9 years. I think I've been on Teamliquid for about 10 years. When I was on USEast, I started to hang out with a group of people in op SWBK. I was also in Clan SCC.

During the years, some left op SWBK and some joined. There was a group of people that I used to play with a lot. We use to talk on vent everyday. We played on PGT and Iccup together.

Some of the players and their ICCup rank that made up op swbk:

gNs.I-Ahzz (I think B/B+/A-). He also goes by the name gigant and made some zerg guides here on teamliquid. He played ZvT/PvZ/ZvZ as far as I remember

sMi.Suppy (or as he is known now eG.Suppy). I think he reached B rank in ICCup before SC2 came up. Me and him almost had a type of rivalry because he would do turtle ZvP (sunk/lurk/Spore) and I actually remember telling him to do that when he was learning ZvP but I have no patience and would always attack into it lol

Salv (I think he was in sMi at some point but not sure). B- Protoss. He played Chill in that SC2GG vs TL showmatch

Gladstone - He had a gNs.I name that I can't remember. B- Terran.

Sharpie C-/C Terran. I would go reaver against him and always lose my shuttle and suicide into his army when he did spilt map scenarios.

They all reached B- (especially Suppy, Salv, Gladstone) cause Ahzz was always just better from us lol and I always wanted too but didn't.

Also, I really wanted to make B- when I was in sMi. because there was a bunch of guys from tl.net that I played with that achieved it while like sMi.Frozen and others (I still do his Nexus First PvP build on FS)

Well, I'm going to fix my mistakes in PvT and PvZ and reach B-. I have a problem of attacking into Terran armies all the time but from recent VODs and replays I've watched on Teamliquid, I've seen a lot of high level Protoss just avoid the army in general and recall or attack everywhere the army isnt and just expand all over the map.

As for PvZ, I never really got into the neo Bisu Build (+1 sair /w speedzeal) and when I used to play seriously, I would do the sair/4 gate speedzeal/archon build. I've been practicing the new build and trying to work on my multitasking.

I'm going on a long vacation in 2 weeks and won't really be able to play Starcraft a lot so I have to get B- this time or its probably never going to happen.

I do kinda wish Iccup hadn't changed their rating system because I find their a lot of C+/B- people that only play lower ranks but I understand its hard to get games. Personally I just make open D+ to C+ games and play whoever joins and most people that do join that are D+ have achieved C+ or B-/B last season or earlier.

I'll try and jot down my progess in new blogs possibly doing a Day 1 to Day 7 thing.

Also, wanted to say thank you for everyone involved in sGs for having a clan for new players/people returning to Starcraft and the Amateur by sGs.Shimy/Fox.Shimy for bringing back my interest for improving my Starcraft skill.

Good luck man! It makes me laugh thinking back to when we all played iCCup. I remember B- being the consensus spot to where you were no longer just another average Starcraft player, but a slightly above average player haha. Many people didn't consider anything under B- to be impressive, but B- was at least deserving of a little respect. I forget the map name now, but the first time I got B- I was only 300-400 away and there was a map you could proxy double gateways and win pretty easily as long as they didn't scout it. One of every two people might sniff it out, but it was enough to still ensure you would gain enough points.

A funny story since you brought up the SC2GG & TL showmatch. The admin forum for SC2GG was discussing who would play who - I can't remember everyone's rank but I remember no one wanted to play Chill on Andromeda - it was an unorthodox map and I think we all thought Chill was their best or one of their best. I wound up getting that position and I practiced my ass off - playing a pile of games on Andromeda versus Z. I remember hearing that the best strategy was corsair and reaver, but with my mechanics there was no way I would be able to pull it off.

The weekend of the showmatch Yaqoob is down at my house. It comes time to play the match and at that point we had lost every single match - I wasn't listening to the commentary but people were messaging me telling me SC2GG was getting skewered, haha - so that I needed to win in order to save face a little bit. I remember I didn't have a particular strategy, I was just going to play a regular game. If memory serves, Chill winds up opening with 6 or 9 mutalisk and then going straight into hydralisk, and then ultralisks. At the time, no one I played like that on iCCup - people went mutalisk or hydras - not both and no transition. I remember making dragoons and having a clear moment in my head where I blanked and was like, "I have no idea what to do right now", lmao.

So I wind up getting wrecked - I have getting a ton of PMs telling me the commentary is brutal and that I let everybody down. So right in the moment where I just lost a game I practiced a lot for; people are telling me how much I let SC2GG down; and the commentary is apparently killing me, Yaqoob turns around, looks at me and says, "Wow - you really sucked". THANKS YAQOOB, THANKS A MILLION, REALLY GLAD I INVITED YOU OVER HERE TO POINT TH AT OUT TO ME! Hahahaha :D

I'm pretty sure the map your talking about is Destination lol

Yaqoob...I recognize your name from the SC2GG days.

Good luck with B- I've actually been playing on iccup a bit more recently myself, maybe we will run into each other at some point.

Nope, not destination. It was a four player map if I recall correctly and the bases were on raised space tileset platforms. I'll try and find it.

EDIT - Cant find it. I looked through the TLPD map section and this map is close to it: http://www.teamliquid.net/tlpd/korean/maps/536_Neo_Electric_Circuit

The only difference is, if I remember right, the bases were raised in the same style as neo forte - they had raised platform from the space tileset. Anyway, you could proxy the two gates at the bottom outside their base on the low ground and the entrance was far enough away that they wouldn't see it regardless of the direction their scout took. It was a cheesy strategy no doubt but I was desperate at the time for B- lol.

Haha all the East dudes will come out of the woodwork now. Good luck Toss.

Also Salv lol I never knew that story but, pretty awesome. You haven't lived until you've been emasculated on stream for your play... in my case the person you lost to was the one who shat on me in the commentary, and there were a LOT of viewers :p

edit: Also my opponent was very strong

How many games did you lose due to having to shut your computer off when your parents came home?

Also good luck getting B-! I don't know if we ever played each other but I remember seeing your name a lot. As someone who used to post blogs exactly like this, it's cool to see them still going.

Also a couple months ago I logged into iCCup to see what was going on and some random guy started messaging me asking for a game. It turned out to be Frozen, so he's still around, hiding in the shadows... Probably trying to get numbers on how many people still use that build he posted.

It never really was and that's why I don't fully get the intention behind his goal. It's really only a symbol. If you manage to get a steady C+, you also get the B- icon, regardless of old or new ranking. The trick was to maintain a B-. Really, there's not a difference. There were plenty of people in Clan leagues with B-, which were beatable. If you looked closer it was one-time B- with a peak of maybe 61xx. However, people with a 63xx rating were an entirely different issue. From what I saw on one of the OP's akas he already managed to get beyond a point range in which there actually was a difference between C+ and B- icon people. Mission already achieved.

... then again I get why you want that symbol so hard. Even though it makes no sense.

I don't know how the ladder works anymore but I think getting B- is a pride thing. Like someone else said earlier, for whatever reason B- used to be the first "respectable" rank. Getting to join the Ladder A-B channel for the first time and seeing all the Koreans in there was pretty sweet. Of course there were a bunch of different types of players who got that rank: there were the people who played during Korean hours (by far the hardest way to do it, but the most rewarding), there were the people who would only play foreigners, and there were the people who just brute forced it by playing a bunch of games and only winning like 30% of them but since wins gave more points than you'd lose by losing, you could eventually hit the rank. But regardless of how you got there, the shiny blue rank next to your name on iCCup does look pretty compared to that ugly yellow.

I don't really like the new system since before if I was C and i played a C+ and won I would get like 162 points on a MOTW and lose only -37. Nowdays, if I am even C- and play a C+ then I only get +130 on a motw and lose -50 as if its the same rank.

A C+ can play a D- and I think the gain 97 points if they win on a motw and only lose 62. So Yes, B- is more or less meaningless if you abuse but however in my opinion the ladder seems harder now especially against a lot of C+/C players.

Its still a personal goal lol.

Update:

I haven't been playing as much as I want but I'm 7-16 lol since starting to game again. A lot of the games are because of decision making mistakes that I am making so I feel that I will start winning more. I think 9-10 of those losses are too people that were B-/B/B+ at the time of playing them, are B- now, or were last few seasons so I don't really mind losing these games. On a plus note, I also manage to beat some B- players.

I got a rocky start during this season, too. Mainly because I hadn't played in awhile. Don't get frustrated, though. You can do it! SO JUST DO IT. NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE.
