it's not about mastery. it's about endurance.

can I ask... what field?

Being self-motivated is also one of the key factors, as it will help ensure you're not in for 10+ years =P

I always have respect for people who can put in the hardwork required to get a phd, regardless of how intelligent they might appear or what school they got it from.

If I could be in for 10+ years, I would, being a PhD student is really great But the legal limit is 9 years and is sadly approaching fast

There's a legal limit? Is that a school limit or a country/EU limit? In the US, since University's are essentially corporations, you can stay in as long as you want as long as you keep paying (though your advisor has some sway on making sure you graduate in a reasonable amount of time).

well, in the US there are limits to how long a program will fund you, or for how long you will be able to secure external funding. that said, I am on something like the 9 year plan

The fact that there is a limit and some general bounds are Czech law, the specific number varies from University to University, but it is generaly 7-9 years.

Today we learned that some students are willing to do almost anything to get their PhD. This photo of a first-year PhD student (technically on his second day on the job) was taken at the premises of the Institute of Physics during actual astroparticle-physics-related work activity.
