By definition, a game expansion is a game that expands on an existing one. It is very difficult to view LoTV as an SC2 expansion from the beta and I don't get the feeling that it is one from the way Blizzard is advertising it.
Blizzard has changed so much in LoTV that it looks unrecognizable from HoTS. Now, I do not mind changing stats and costs in an expansion for the sake of balance, but some existing units and mechanics have been completely re-designed. Massive re-designs of existing elements does not qualify a game as an expansion, but rather a new game. That is what LoTV feels like to me: SC3. This puts LoTV in a weird spot; it is advertised as an expansion, but it feels like a very different game from the previous iteration. I did not get this feeling with HoTS. It felt like an expansion from WoL, and in contrast, WoL felt like a new game from BW.
This also begs the question of why Blizzard did not change them if they were design problems from the beginning instead waiting until now; the most reasonable answer that I can come up with is that Blizzard does not know what it is doing with the game, and I thought of this since 2011-2012.
At this point, I do not care about playing SC2 as a competitive game due to its poor design and me getting older and having more responsibilities. I only care about the campaign and how the story is going to end.

FYI, it's being sold as a separate game, not an expansion.

A stand-alone expansion is still considered an expansion.

i'm glad they are making it radically different. it gives us some choice in game style.

I still don't get what's your point. Why can't Blizzard market it as a stand-alone?

They can, but they shouldn't call it an expansion when there's going to be massive re-designs from the previous game.

As others have pointed out there were much bigger expansions for games than LotV. Actually, most of the stuff the community is talking about are pretty much hardcore issues that influence the hardcore metagame, but not so much the game at its core.
Having said that, I like that blizzard is trying to sell it as "Legacy of the Void" and not so much as "Starcraft 2: The next expansion". People have played SC2:WoL multiplayer. Many didn't even give the SC2:HotS multiplayer a chance because they knew how the game played out in WoL and expected it to be similar. Breaking with the history of the game would be a huge chance to refresh the playerbase. I'm rather afraid that blizzard isn't taking it far enough with changes and the game will be recognized as "SC2: The Last Expansion that had those interesting ideas but I rather just go play LoL again because who cares about Co-op vs AI or Archon=regular game so whatever".

Bigger in terms of what? Things added or things changed? I haven't played CnC, but I did play WC3. Yes, they added a lot of content, but not a whole lot was significantly or fundamentally changed.

You might be upset because of that, but it would be way more sketch to reuse all the assets and call the game new. There might be examples of people who've done that, but a company like Blizzard would get a lot of shit for that.
Plus Blizzard's campaign has always been to have two expansions since they released SC2. Isn't it one race per expansion in the campaign?
SC1 and SC:BW are very different games in terms of strategy, but the gui is the same, the sprites are reused, the gameplay is basically the same etc.
And everyone complained about SC2, so of course they're trying something dramatic. Just not so dramatic they cancel the last expansion and release an entirely new game.

I fully support Blizzard taking it very far with the changes. What do they have to lose at this point?

Couldnt have said it better or in less words.
SC2's popularity has absolutely plummeted in terms of popularity.
Obviously SC2 is not in a place where it can be left at, and expect it to flourish.
BW had a proscene that lasted nearly a decade after its creation... at this Rate, we have a bigger chance of BW becoming a major competitive title again, than SC2 ever getting more popular.
They need to drastically re-work some stuff, or this game will be completely dead in a couple years.
LotV is a VERY pivotal moment in SC history, because its release/success in the first 6 months will decide whether the game dies completely or not.
Its the time when people who have played the games will return to check out the new expansion, and its the time to get new players into a new title.
That being said: as hopeful as i was for SC2 back at its launch....after this many years and so little done in terms of fixing it (at least imo)... dont have much hope for it. Will check it out, but if its not drastically different, cant picture myself putting the amount of time i put in back during WoL/BW
