It’s been a long and dangerous journey up to this point, but they have nearly done it.
“We need a border fence!”, he shouts as the masses applaud. “We build a fence around our property so that no one can come in uninvited, so why don’t we just build one around our House as well.”
The House Austria is what he propagates. A cozy home to everybody who is nice and a living hell to the naughty. And no home to foreigners and refugees at all. The house is already full, all the rooms are taken.
“It’s the European Union that doesn’t protect us from them.”, he tells his followers. “The EU…” If Austria is a house of the righteous in his analogy, then the Union is the palace of the oppressors. Their restrictions are the roots of our powerlessness and their propaganda is what makes them come.
The audience applaudes again. And again. They feed on his strong words, on his righteous hatred and the way he calls them “my dear friends”. He is the leader that they have been waiting for. “Not that kind of leader of course”, an old man says. “That’s just the lies of the leftleft winged people.” Another one of his endless word creations, catchy phrases and rhymes.
Just a few hours away they are marching. Having already reached the promised lands of the European Union they want to find a new home. “No water or food until Germany”, a sign of the past days said, held out from a stopped train that they told them would bring them to Vienna. One step closer. But the train was a trap, created by the Hungarian authorities. It was never supposed to breach the border.
Another one of those righteous guys: Keeping Hungary clean. But in this case he is legally secure. Hungary does what they are supposed to do in the EU. The refugees arrive in Hungary and thus, given the European laws, they are responsible for them. Those people, trying to get to Germany or Sweden because those countries promised to take them, promised to provide them with a new life, are now stuck. They don’t want to be “held hostage” in Hungary they say. They didn’t come to stay in Hungary. But the authorities are doing what they have to.
Now they are marching again, their journey goes on. Hungary is letting them pass. Or not. But they are leaving anyways.
One of them says he has lost his mother. But he has found a new one, and her name is Angela. The hope is glistering in his eyes, just like his tears. “Why don’t they just let us go? Germany wants us and we want Germany, it’s a perfect match! ”
“They don’t even speak English here. This isn’t Europe, this is Russia!”, one of them says about the Hungarian police. Russia, another one of those players that somehow doesn’t feel responsible for those people. But whose pro-Assad policy is a major part in the system of triggers that have led to the misery.
Today another few thousands will arrive in Austria and border trains towards the "promised land". With their European flag held high and their German hopes. Meanwhile all across Europe the self declared “caretakers” are rallying. Rallying to their crusade for power, rallying against human rights, rallying against the dignity of a people on the run.
And the old Europe is following.
