Well, it wasn't Socrates who said that, but it was Mill, and he said that in the context of arguing against Bentham's non-qualified pure hedonism. This is important because in that context, Mill's statement made sense, although it wasn't too much of an argument - it was more of a fancy illustration of his point. Taken out of context though, I wouldn't know what to do with it.

But let's take your post at face value. You ascribe Socrates a certain desire, namely to be x rather than y. You ascribe other desires to pigs. From this follows that different people (and animals) have different desires. This doesn't have anything to do with values, and in fact, it's neither interesting nor does anything interesting follow from that. You'd have to fill in a lot more to get to your desired point about values. Sorry if this post was a bit negative.

Cortza made a post that he intended to be about values and perception, saying that it was all ultimately about perspectives and saying that Socrates dissatisfied might have been, from the perspective of a pig, equivalent to a pig being satisfied, insofar as dissatisfaction might be part of what it means to be human, just as (I presume) vulgar satisfaction might be part of what it means to be a pig, so they are both equivalent insofar as both cases are but mere expressions of the fulfillment of a thing's nature - or at the very least that is what I assume he was trying to say. It was clear that he was standing in the shadow of a thought that was not at all trivial, but lacked the means to express it properly, so I criticised his post maybe a bit too harsh. Unfortunately he did not take my reply as an invitation to continue the discussion, but instead went off-topic and eventually deleted the posts. Such is the way of things.
