Almost finished the first year of my Bachelor in Mathematics. And this shit is awesome. I knew I would learn some cool stuff going in but not this cool. Real Analysis, Abstract Algebra, Logic/set theory, Linear Algebra. All of it. Awesome. Really I advise all the engineers and physicists/chemists etcetera. To take a Math class aimed at Math majors. It's so bizarrely different than your calculus/linear algebra (for engineers..) courses. I think Algebra and/or Real analysis are the coolest. Go do it, you won't disappointed. There are like zero downsides. I mean it's challenging, awesome, and all your other math classes will seem incredibly dull and easy afterwards. Maybe the challenging thing can be a downside. Because you will feel like the dumbest idiot to ever grace the earth for a couple of months. But it's worth it.

I heard mathematic is boring because is too monotonous.
two earned bachelor and one with master in mathematics, but then in their job has nothing with mathematics thus they are teacher now in physic, informatic etc^^ (declined a job at airplane Lufthansa etc).
I know a girl (from my class, she was the by far the best in mathematics) stopped mathematics after 4th semester, "Its boring, just stupid numbers".

Take some topology next! (Personally I didn't like point-set stuff thaaat much, since certain people convinced me that algebraic topology is the only nice thing out there... but it's really nice!)

Also take some number theory and combinatorics classes; they're really interesting even at an introductory level

the biggest downside on doing a math class is that you have to do a math class.
its pretty cool otherwise

At University level most mathematics uses letters not numbers ;p

Next year topology is one of my classes Reading on wikipedia it certainly seems awesome :o Already took a probability/combinatorics and number theory course ^.^

The last time I saw a number was about a year ago. Mathematics is about ideas, quantity(numbers), space, distance, chance, change, etcetera. But we don't really work with the objects themselves(numbers) we study the relationships between them.

the biggest downside on doing a math class is that you have to do a math class.

I can assure you, whatever Math class you ever took. It's has zero resemblance to the classes I mentioned in my above post.

I can't remember seeing any numbers in the pure math classes i took a few years ago.

I don't know, somehow i always ended up annoyed after a class without apparent reason. Maybe i should indeed follow some of them, just to see if i can appreciate them more than some time ago.
@zksa: which college are you going to?

Bachelor's in math, master's in math ed., getting my PhD in math ed., and I'm a college professor of mathematics

I agree with everything you said. The hard part is motivating students who aren't in a math, science, or engineering field... getting everyone else interested

I'm a rising senior in high school, and I think this blog basically confirmed what I thought about getting a math degree. I love math, and I'm actually starting a math summer program in a few weeks that goes over the basics of some of that college-level stuff. Super cool!

Nice try maths professor!
I think in our modern age technology has evolved to become more addictive. The things that don't give us pleasure aren't used as much. Work was never meant to be fun, but doing it makes us happier in the long run.

I took some calculus courses at a local college during my junior and senior years. Extremely fun stuff.
Math is very cool, but a lot of people I know seem to think it is just numbers T_T

I was thinking whether i should blog similar stuff some days ago ;D
Currently i'm in 1 year in in physics (the first semester we had 75% math classes (linear algebra and analysis seperately)) and i couldnt have been more surprised! I used to be pretty average-below average in i think it would be called middleschool or highschool. My father used to help me out a lot but it just sucked i mean i didnt like school math but i was all into physics and engineering. The last year i managed to get 13/15 in my math exam and i decided to just try studying physics instead of engineering because why not? I went in with the expectation that i would just fail horribly and math would bore me to death) because my university is considered rather tough...
I have never been so wrong! I probably had the best math profs you can get and i can tell you (at least here) it doesnt compare to school at all!
And i passed all my exams first try despite my grades in school were worse than the ones of all the people i've met here ^^
Long story short: Consider studying math or physics if youre undecided! ;D
Next year i will probably take some nume)rical stuff and probably more linear algebra! (it feels really weird writing this because i used to hate it in school^^)

Interesting to me that you're Real Analysis and Abstract Algebra in your first year. At my University you generally don't take that level of math until third year.

Also as an engineering/physics type, I"m going to go ahead and pass on Math classes aimed at Math majors.

One thing I've noticed about the mathematician's classes is that they have to prove everything. They also focus on edge cases and boundaries and try to break their own theorems. That's all well and good, and somebody has to do it.

But I view mathematics as a tool. Give me the formulae, tell me they work, and I'm more than happy to believe you
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It's so cool that we have so many kinds of talented people on TL. I already knew you were a college professor but just reading it again is awesome!

TL is awesome
That's the 2nd time in a week I've seen someone sig a quote from this GD and I have never witnessed a sig quote happen in my TL history ever before. -Najda

Try math at a top 10 school. bunch of crock and university professors don't give a shiot if you learn anything. They only care about their own research and expect you to learn it yourself (I guess cuz you are at a top 10 school)

I just finished my BSC in math& bio and would echo what the op said about mathematics being super cool - albeit challenging at points. As generalstan mentioned it's pretty weird you're doing real analysis in first year though (is it an intro class?). Personally I've never enjoyed those kinds of math courses and have preferred less logic and more applied math in my degree. For me, math is kind of cool as a major since you do have some flexibility with what areas you prefer. Employment is kind of rough, but the major also opens some doors to alternative schooling post-graduation. Overall not a terrible choice imo and enjoyable.
Try hard or don't try at all.

Yeah, it's pretty awesome. I've got a BS in math. All those fantasy fanatics should pick up a math/science text for $60. It's like an actual book of natural magic, like real-world magic. No joke.

And people who say math is just a bunch of numbers are doing nothing more than stating their utmost ignorance of the subject. That's arithmetic, not mathematics.

Just wait, bro. Just wait. It only gets better from there. And once you take Topology, get a coffee mug that says "doughnut " on it and watch the Hitler dub where Hitler learns Topology. Also, Complex Analysis, Number Theory, Combinatorics all will gove you some pleasure it sounds like haha
And then you know what happened all of a sudden?
