two earned bachelor and one with master in mathematics, but then in their job has nothing with mathematics thus they are teacher now in physic, informatic etc^^ (declined a job at airplane Lufthansa etc). I know a girl (from my class, she was the by far the best in mathematics) stopped mathematics after 4th semester, "Its boring, just stupid numbers".

Take some topology next! (Personally I didn't like point-set stuff thaaat much, since certain people convinced me that algebraic topology is the only nice thing out there... but it's really nice!) Also take some number theory and combinatorics classes; they're really interesting even at an introductory level @dingodile: numbers?? that ain't math

At University level most mathematics uses letters not numbers ;p

I know a girl (from my class, she was the by far the best in mathematics) stopped mathematics after 4th semester, "Its boring, just stupid numbers". The last time I saw a number was about a year ago. Mathematics is about ideas, quantity(numbers), space, distance, chance, change, etcetera. But we don't really work with the objects themselves(numbers) we study the relationships between them. the biggest downside on doing a math class is that you have to do a math class. its pretty cool otherwise I can assure you, whatever Math class you ever took. It's has zero resemblance to the classes I mentioned in my above post.

I don't know, somehow i always ended up annoyed after a class without apparent reason. Maybe i should indeed follow some of them, just to see if i can appreciate them more than some time ago. @zksa: which college are you going to?

+ Show Spoiler + Bachelor's in math, master's in math ed., getting my PhD in math ed., and I'm a college professor of mathematics I agree with everything you said. The hard part is motivating students who aren't in a math, science, or engineering field... getting everyone else interested

Math is very cool, but a lot of people I know seem to think it is just numbers T_T

Currently i'm in 1 year in in physics (the first semester we had 75% math classes (linear algebra and analysis seperately)) and i couldnt have been more surprised! I used to be pretty average-below average in i think it would be called middleschool or highschool. My father used to help me out a lot but it just sucked i mean i didnt like school math but i was all into physics and engineering. The last year i managed to get 13/15 in my math exam and i decided to just try studying physics instead of engineering because why not? I went in with the expectation that i would just fail horribly and math would bore me to death) because my university is considered rather tough... I have never been so wrong! I probably had the best math profs you can get and i can tell you (at least here) it doesnt compare to school at all! And i passed all my exams first try despite my grades in school were worse than the ones of all the people i've met here ^^ Long story short: Consider studying math or physics if youre undecided! ;D Next year i will probably take some nume)rical stuff and probably more linear algebra! (it feels really weird writing this because i used to hate it in school^^)

Also as an engineering/physics type, I"m going to go ahead and pass on Math classes aimed at Math majors. One thing I've noticed about the mathematician's classes is that they have to prove everything. They also focus on edge cases and boundaries and try to break their own theorems. That's all well and good, and somebody has to do it. But I view mathematics as a tool. Give me the formulae, tell me they work, and I'm more than happy to believe you

I already knew you were a college professor but just reading it again is awesome! TL is awesome

And people who say math is just a bunch of numbers are doing nothing more than stating their utmost ignorance of the subject. That's arithmetic, not mathematics.
