I've played so many RPG's the past decade and every year there was plenty of new stuff to play.
But lately I found myself having to go back to play the old gems again, since I can hardly find anything new.
Thing is, you can always go back to play BG, Torment, Morrowind etc again, but after the Xth playthrough every game will get boring.
And it seems since Skyrim, Mass Effect3, Witcher 2 there haven't been many big PC releases at all. Every time I check game and RPG sites there are only new RPG releases for consoles.
Dragon age 3 is coming, and I hope they learned about the mistakes they made with 2. But that's still a while away. And I could use a big world to explore and spend way to many hours in.
My question to you guys is if you can recommend me some nice ones that I might have missed. No MMO's or Diablo kind of games, but the ones with and epic world, story line, immersion and char development. Graphics are less important.
Maybe there's some nice Indy RPG I might have missed?

Although you probably played it already, you didnt cite Kotor. It's not recent but it's still one of the best Star Wars games out there. Kotor2 is also pretty good, so if you actually somehow missed them go get them asap.

Kotor surpasses most RPG's of recent years. The only game that I came to love more than it was Oblivion.
The most recent indie RPG I've played on Steam is Valdis Story: Abyssal City

Bravely Default is a lovely 3DS RPG.

I've had some fun with Skyborn last couple of days. Retro-style game with, insofar, interesting characters and a good story development. I haven't played more than 2 hours though. The game doesn't seem to be too long either.
Bought it off steam for like 1,5 euros on sale.

Yup played Kotor of course, at least 5 times
And The Stick of Truth too, it was fun but way too short

this is a remake of the exile trilogy, which was an old but extremely huge shareware game from back in the mid 90s. this is a turn based classic rpg. 4 chars, lots of classes/create your own class, big world (especially the third one) huge story, etc
it is also on steam, but i think it is more expensive. there's also avernum escape from the pit, which is a remake of this remake with more updated graphics.

Sounds like you need to go play Vampire: The masquerade - bloodlines. Just remember to get the bug fixing patch.

Thanks for posting guys And yep played them both, Avernum and Vampire, great games indeed for anyone reading this.
Seems I've played them all so far, I've really ran out Do I really need to buy a console.... keep them coming though, I've still got hope!

You should be able to play quite a lot of console games on emulators just fine, especially for the older ones.

Witcher 2 was awesome, just saying. I'm looking forward to Dark Souls 2 when it comes out. PC is in April, console has already been released. Agree with you on DA2, was horrible and hope they learnt from their mistakes before releasing DA3. I also enjoyed Mass Effect 2, number 3 wasn't that good.
Let us know what you decided on and how it is for you.

Dark Souls 2
I heard that shit was both amazing and cringing due to difficulty.

Icewind Dale 1? I guess you have already played everything in the Infinity Engine.
|
I like mount and blade warband a lot, but that's really not that story heavy. Deus ex maybe? Fallout 3/New Vegas?

Uh... sure, I guess, if you like adolescent fantasy games where you kill swarms of bad guys while buttrock plays and women flash their tits at you.
Dark Souls was great too, I loved how it told me to push the A button to do things... while I was playing on PC. But it was dark, which I guess is good enough for the masses.

I personally enjoyed Shadowrun Returns and Dragonfall. Arcanum was also not mentioned yet. Neverwinter Nights was also not mentioned but I assume you know that title already.
It sounds like you've basically exhausted the history of western CRPGs so I'll mention some titles outside that genre that I've been (re)playing recently. Tales of Graces, Golden Sun, Chrono Trigger, Seiken Densetsu 3. All Japanese, so you might not like the genre, but excellent in their own department.
Tabletop RPGs also unlock amazing new worlds, but again that's a different genre.

some good advice here on the Japanese games, all classics!
have you ever played Divinity II? it's not a GREAT game but it's fun, though it definitely won't hit you as being a classic. Also, though I don't know if i'm allowed to post it because they're technically illegal AND you have probably played them all already anyway, have you played the SNES classics through and through? personally, the classic SNES RPG's (Seiken Densetsu 3 included) probably gave me the most enjoyable experiences in video games I've ever had.

Divinity 2
At least I enjoyed it more than I expected, unfortunately while the game is pretty ambitious I don't think it had the biggest budget which causes some obvious shortcomings.
Oh wow the above poster ninjad me pretty hard, well 2 votes better than 1.

Divine Divinity Fallout 1 & 2 Jade Empire Neverwinter Nights 1 & 2 Maybe Drakensang, haven't played the games but their scores are usually fine Risen
