Interestingly enough I would say Fallout New Vegas is somewhat of a spiritual successor to the Gothic series, in that it's an open world that can be shaped by player choices, as opposed to the Bethesda made games where the world is mostly static and the player is meant to explore it rather than shape it.

I've only ever heard good things about the Gothic series. Apparently, they're quite heavy on learning curve, too.

You'd have a job finding it but Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance for Gamecube/PS2 was a pretty good mix of hack n slash with rpg. Obviously being a D&D game, the rpg element was very well done. It plays a bit like Diablo III, in fact it plays a lot like Diablo III does on the xbox lol but the story, gameplay, etc etc is waaaaay better.

the only issue i ever had was how easy it was to completely abuse the import character feature to boost your gold and buy all the best items well before you should be able to by playing legit. I was even more pissed off that I hadn't figured out that I could abuse it, until I had already played thru the game 4 times!!!!!!!!

I forgot to give a shout-out to Mount and Blade: Warband which was mentioned earlier in this thread. It's a fantastic game, especially for the price, and there are tons of mods to give it replayability.

In and of itself, it's more "true-to-life" in that there is no magic, but there are mods that include those elements if that's what you want. There's also a really popular Game of Thrones mod that I've never tried because the specs to run it are a lot beefier than the native game, and my current machine is far from beefy. It's on my list of games to play when I splurge on a new rig.

If you do try it out, I would look into getting the "Pre-Battle Orders and Deployment" and "Diplomacy" mods, which add better AI and more realistic features to the native game.

Vagrant Story is a great game for the playstation that you could emulate.

It's not an rpg, but if you want a game with amazing immersion and characters, The Last Express is awesome. It's like a graphic adventure I suppose. Like an RPG without the grinding. I always try and bring it up because I think it's the most amazing game.

Bravely Default is a lovely 3DS RPG.

this, If you're into JRPGs Bravely Default is a must play for 3DS owners.

otherwise I'd suggest playing Radiant Historia for the DS(at least there are emulators for DS unlike 3DS)

also Soul blazer trilogy(Soul Blazer/Illusion of Gaia/Terranigma)

Gonna give this a second shout out. Both Bravely Default and Radiant Historia are amazing games for the 3DS and DS respectively. I recommend them both =).

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning (what a title, eh).

It's not super polished but it's fun to play, though my playthroughs were 60 hours. It's a little grindy and money is useless late game unless you wanna shell out huge money for repairs (when you can just buy repair kits for chump change and repair yourself).

If you abuse the game's crafting, respecing, potion/power stacking (potions that, for instance, increase fire damage 50%) you can trivialize tons of the game even on the hardest difficulty, which isn't that hard. I just try to play and have a more normal experience. Sadly, that normal experience is likely to include an onerous inventory management system. Maybe you don't like to wiki games on first playthroughs, but I'd wiki the backpack locations. It's not much of a spoiler.

This reminds me, I just played through the original KotoR once more, and it got my RPG juices flowing too :/ Witcher is what I anticipate the most, but like a previous poster criticized, I find the women throwing themselves at the main character a bit of a drawback from an otherwise mature story (mature audience required and mature story are two potentially very different things both put into Witcher).

If you don't mind bad gfx Ultimas IV and V from the 80's far surpass most modern RPGs in terms of story and an imaginative, original game world.

When I was a kid I used to drop rubbish in front of the king and then laugh hysterically whenever it disappeared thinking the king probably ate it

good times, Ultima, even though that's the only memory I have of those games

Witcher 2 was awesome, just saying.

Uh... sure, I guess, if you like adolescent fantasy games where you kill swarms of bad guys while buttrock plays and women flash their tits at you.

Dark Souls was great too, I loved how it told me to push the A button to do things... while I was playing on PC. But it was dark, which I guess is good enough for the masses.

What would you recommend then? Name it and I'll try it.

The Witcher books are also pretty good..

fuck him. that guy is an ass. witcher is amazing and dark souls does not pander to the masses.

im playing vampires right now, fucking amazing. My advice is to pick up the game called...holy shit you played all the great ones already.

Judging from what you said in the OP, we have a very similar taste in games. A recent game I've really enjoyed is Might and Magic X: Legacy. It really sucked me in and has great character development, I highly recommend it. However, you should check out some video's on it first, it is a throw-back to the first few MaM games, which are 20-25 years old. The only negative thing about it is the optimisation/performance, gameplay wise it's superb. Also, if you decide to play, do so on the highest difficulty.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. I've played most but not all
gonna try Might & Magic first then.
I saw some bad reviews, but maybe it's just not for all. I quite liked the old ones.

Parasite Eve, if you can get over the dated graphics. It's Resident Evil turned RPG-ish, complete with a bonus 99-level dungeon to boot. Parasite Eve 2 is also decent, although it's pretty much a straight action game.

if one brings up Risen and Gothic 3, Gothic 1 and 2 should be mentioned as well. Both titles surpass part 3 and Risen (aka unofficial successor to the Gothic series). They create a wonderful dark and dirty atmosphere with well written and witty dialogues. for their time, they were truly amazing. I don't know how the English version is though, since they were initially made for the German market and thus have been produced in German. Translations can kill an RPG :S

Gothic 1 has some pretty bad translations and voice acting, Gothic 2 is fine.
