this, If you're into JRPGs Bravely Default is a must play for 3DS owners.

otherwise I'd suggest playing Radiant Historia for the DS(at least there are emulators for DS unlike 3DS)

also Soul blazer trilogy(Soul Blazer/Illusion of Gaia/Terranigma)

Ultima IX, Arcanum, Final Fantasy 8.

I just bought Might and Magic X Legacy on steam, only 20 minutes in, too early to recommend, but it is interresting so far,
also Dark Souls 2 coming up for pc. Southpark Stick of truth is amazing if you are a southpark fan, but really too short to lose yourself in.

dont know if you'd play something like Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup i saw a post on TL, downloaded it and am delighted with it, it feels like an RPG to me and has brought many hours of fun, its extremely hard and deep, the class system is really good and very diverse. any off the fallout games from 1 to new Vegas i recommend 2 as my favorite, Zelda-link to the past can be emulated easily
Good luck on your mission and report back on how it goes
dungeon crawl WHHHAD a game

Witcher 2 was awesome, just saying.

Uh... sure, I guess, if you like adolescent fantasy games where you kill swarms of bad guys while buttrock plays and women flash their tits at you.

Dark Souls was great too, I loved how it told me to push the A button to do things... while I was playing on PC. But it was dark, which I guess is good enough for the masses.

What would you recommend then? Name it and I'll try it.

The Witcher books are also pretty good..

lol, "good enough for the masses" is a terrible way to describe Dark Souls... Masses are usually not pleased by games that don't hold their hand, aren't free to play, and frustratingly difficult. A true ARPG fan gets the most out of a game like Dark Souls, while a member of the "masses" realizes eventually that the game is way out of their league.
By far, Dark Souls was the best ARPG on 360 and PS3 (maybe until Dark Souls 2). The PC version is probably much better, considering you can mod.

If you're into repetitive mouse-clicking enemies down, linear travel and the illusion of choice, you might enjoy Jade Empire.

Ultima games have been historically quite good, for fans of classic games. Six, 7 & 9 are considered to be the best ones.

There are a wealth of great Final Fantasies, if you haven't played them all. They're pretty much all good, with the exception of X2 and for it's simplicity, XIII was also pretty bad, though the cinematics were pretty, and you're not forced to use the "easy button" all the way through.

-Jade empire is a solid game but nothing spectacular.
-Divine divinity is awesome
-Final fantasies are worth playing 6 through 12 (not including X-2, XI) XIII for visuals, PSP titles are amazing but not really RPGs (cept tactics, play tactics.)
-Fallout / Elder scrolls titles. Tell me you've played a good modded morrowind / skyrim? Might not be an "rpg" to some though.
-Kingdoms of amalur: reckoning is a reasonably good standalone RPG.
-Deus ex: HR has some RPG elements and is great.
-Pokemon, gen 1/2 remakes are my fave, some solid difficulty hacks out there (Liquid crystal, FireRed Omega, Blaze black / volt white + other by same author)

If turn-based tactical squad games can be considered RPGs, Fallout:Tactics is a good one. By far, it's my favourite Fallout game.

It's not really "turn-based", but the combat system uses Action Points. One nice thing about it is the ability to micro your squad like you would units in SC2. Stutter-stepping is totally legit vs melee enemies, or you could pack a humvee full of squadies and mow shit down while exploring the map.

Fallout Tactics and Deus Ex HR are at least as much RPG as Mass Effect 3. Also the Front Mission series could be considered linear RPGs, especially Front Mission 3 (which features the biggest plot twist in any game, and right at the beginning too).

Infinite Space is a good sci-fi RPG too, the characters are mostly likeable and customization is huge, although combat can get a bit grindy.

Baldur's Gate 1 remains my favorite game of all time, but about a year ago a discovered Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura and I cant recommend it highly enough. It broke into my top 5 games of all time after a couple days of playing it, despite the fact I'm not a huge fan of steampunk in general. If you have never played it, play it.

If you like tactic games (I'm a RPG fan and I also like tactic games so perhaps you'll like it too) get Dolphin (wii-gamecube emulator) and get the 2 fire emblem titles (radiant down and and path of radiance).
And get the wii-gaùmecube RPGs, baiten kaitos 1 & 2, xenoblade chronicles, the last story, skies of arcadia legends...

Dark Souls for PC is also amazing, even tho it's an action RPG it's a must play, and a must 100% if you like it (lot of optionnal stuff to do)

In general get a PS1, PS2, SNES and other emulators and gogo.
For instance the whole nocturne/persona (Shin Megami Tensei) serie is fantastic and is about 8 games or something.
Persona 3 (and 1 and 2), Nocturne (must play !), Devil summoner serie, Devil Survivor, Digital Devil Saga...basically if Atlus made it and it's a RPG, gogo.

Was mentioned earlier, but Chrono Trigger for SNES is, imo, possibly the greatest game of all time. If someone could do with 2015 tools what Chrono Trigger did with 1995 tools...the game was just way ahead of its time, though dated now.

I personally never played BG or BG2 so I'm finally just starting up a char in BGEE, looking forward to it very much.

I think most of the other games I would recommend have already been mentioned. Morrowind might be up there with Chrono Trigger for me, I definitely thought Oblivion and Skyrim were steps back in terms of everything other than graphics.

I tried the Gothic series of games but I couldn't get them to run smoothly on my laptop for some reason. A lot of the like 2005-2007ish era games (NWN2 also) for some reason give my newer laptops trouble and I never could figure out why. Gothic is supposed to be Morrowind-like though which is what made me want to try it.

If you have a PS3 Final Fantasy X HD remaster is awesome. Diablo 3 Reaper of souls comes out next week if you want to play that.

Age of Decadence is an indie old-school western RPG you might have missed, you can play about 2/3 of it if you pre-order, or play the first town for free. It's quite challenging, and basically the Dark Souls of turn-based RPGs.

Divinity: Original Sin is prettier than AoD but less challenging, and is similarly a turn-based tactical game with lots of player choices. Also there's co-op. Still in early-access mode though.

Pillars of Eternity is coming out this year and looks pretty good.

The Dark Souls series is more action than RPG, but still quite fun.

I enjoyed all of Troika's games. Arcanum has a brilliantly designed world with lots of secrets for the player to discover, Temple of Elemental Evil has fun tactical combat, and Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines is as close as a non Deus Ex game will come to capturing the feeling of Deus Ex.

I realize those are at least semi big titles and it sounds like you are pretty HC and old school and odds are you've tried those.
