Motivation for me is a very fickle thing. Sometimes i can be super motivated and get work done and study for hours before exams. Other times like this week, studying drags on incredibly slowly, and time passes at a snails pace.
I have a hard time comparing myself to my peers, because one can never be sure of how much time someone puts into work. While person A and Person B may both input 3 hours of work into studying. Person A could be browsing facebook and other social media while person B sits in solitary confinement hammering out problems.
Out of these two people, I fluctuate between person a and b quite easily. I would say that the major source of my lack of motivation lately, would be lack of passion. I don't quite know what i want to do, and throw out various job titles and fields of study as suggestions given to my by people i have met. None of them get my blood boiling, nor am i really that interested in any of them.
The fact that i have yet to find what i want to be is quite frustrating, it seems that everyone i know at college, has some goal, some pursuit, some endgame that they all are striving for. Out of the last 10 people i have talked to only 1 person has admitted to not knowing what he was going to study, and he was a freshman in his second quarter.
Next winter I will apply to several majors. They are all somewhat related in that they all require loads of science courses. I'm not very excited about applying, and i guess in the end i would be ok with any of majors i get into. The fact that i will be settling for something that i am only ok with is quite depressing. Growing up, I have always wanted a job that I would love to wake up and go to in the morning. However, the more i learn about people, the more impossible this dream seems.
Anyway i need to go to my ta's office hours. Hopefully i can motivate myself enough to be ready for my test in 2 days.

maybe just stop for 1-2 year for find what you want to do??
Travel the world, for example?? student got many ways for making it really easy now (aka no money required almost)
I'm saying that because that's actually one of the best way to find about yourself and what you want, what you like, what you dislike.
The main reason why you have a hard time find what you want for your future job currently that because of the above.
So yeah, nothing wrong with waiting if you don't know what to do, got many friends who just study something to go back study something again after, they wasted time because what they picked first was REALY not something for them.
So I'm saying try to be sure what you like, what bring you the pleasure of doing? What you enjoy? With people? Alone? Work with no boss? Outside?? Stressful job where you get your blood boiling? Calm job?
That's all about to know yourself....
Good luck!

When I run out of motivation I compare myself to other people and see how far behind I am.

Are you in college and just undecided in terms of major?
I feel much the same as you in terms of motivation.
