Today I went to my first live premier tournament in Toronto, the city I’ve recently adopted and now call home. Today was a great day, and it gave me a new perspective on Starcraft, on esports, and on life. It sounds crazy to say, but it helped me reflect quite a bit on these subjects.

There’s a lot of negativity surrounding Starcraft. The main stickler being it’s popularity and the whole « Starcraft is dead » bandwagon. Then there was this Reddit post. Then there was last day’s StarCast Podcast with Tasteless. Then there was the WCS Season 3 finale at the Toronto Conention Centre and the amazing crowd.

The thing is, it was the first time I experienced gaming with nothing being negative. Nobody complained. Not at all. Nobody boo’d anyone. Nobody said Starcraft was dying and how horrible things are. No. Everyone cheered for everyone. Sure there are fan favourites; everyone wants Jaedong to do well. But that doesn’t stop us from loving incredible plays and cheering on the winners. This is no ordinary sport, like baseball or other team sports where there are "good guys" and "bad guys". This was sheer positivity. It was amazing to experience this. I was able to cheer for players from all three races just because I love them and their stories. What a wonderful experience.

This was esports at its purest. There were no trolls. There was no sexist Twitch chat or any misogyny (amazing!) There wasn’t any whining about balance or about how dead this game is. Nobody was bitching about how they hate xyz caster (in fact, I was at first unhappy with the caster lineup, I am now fully converted). There was just a few thousand people who love this game and show just how alive it is and how beautiful it can be.

Today was a good day. I didn’t experience anything negative. To the point that when I left the venue, I chatted with strangers, had a smile on the hour-long bus ride home, and felt as though a burden had been lifted. I can’t wait for Saturday and Sunday. I’m going to have a blast.

****
I promise not to make a tasteless joke.

Yep. Extremely negative people on the forums don't realize that they would never say in a real conversation what they write on forums (because it would make them look stupid and embittered). Which make them objective idiots (not being aware of reality is a form, more or less, of idiocy). So next time you read a forum, just ignore those people, not because you don't like what they write, but because they're idiots, and spending time arguing with idiots is a form of madness (unless you get paid for it).

Just enjoy !

I would say it is stagnating in person. Why wouldn't I? What would possibly happen to me?

The fact is, brood war was the top dog for a while. Now, because of a number of different reasons, starcraft 2 is stagnating. It's incredibly disappointing, because it has an effect on the future competitive community and events that will happen for it. I think a lot of people are sad at the state of sc2 because of its enormous potential, and the fact that it has a solid niche for itself feels like selling the starcraft brand short.

I don't know if the twitch chat is so much misogynistic as freaking stupid.
The game is balanced. We just suck.

Nice post, dude. I hope you enjoy Saturday and Sunday as much, if not more, than Friday!

Don't worry about the moron minority. Just ignore them and carry on. They ain't ever going to be happy with SC2.

I totally agree with you. At the beginning of the tournament on Friday, I joked to my friends how funny it would be if the audience started sports chants like "De-fence! De-fence!" and then that actually happened! Everything about the live experience was fantastic, then I went home and looked online for pictures of the event and saw several threads of people whining about the most trivial things and being negative for no apparent reason.
