Last night, I'm laying in bed after just watching Yoda get smashed by True. After about ten minutes, I start hearing this female voice yelling. I can't really make out what is being said; just assorted yelling. It sounds like maybe two woman yelling, but I can't really tell about what. It is one building down from where I live, so I can't actually see anything going on (and I'm not going to put on clothes and go look), but I can hear it reasonably well. Then eventually some male voices join in. I assume it is some sort of domestic dispute. Having lived in apartments for the past decade or so, this isn't incredibly rare. While I haven't heard any domestic dispute in the 6 months I've lived at this particular apartment, it wasn't incredibly shocking. Toward the end I hear a male voice say what sounds like "shut the fuck up." I figured it was one of the residents, informing the people involved that they should shut the fuck up. After that, it seemed to die off. Thinking it is over, I go back to bed (I was up at the window trying to hear what was going on).
Then about 2-3 minutes later, I hear it: the pop. It sounded like a loud fire-cracker. But I knew it wasn't, this was a gunshot (probably a handgun of some kind, maybe a 9mm? I'm not really a gun guy). I realize someone has probably just been shot, from about 250-300 yards from where I'm sleeping (great). I'm still not dressed, and I'm not the kind of guy that goes running toward gunfire, but I get up and look out the window to see what I can see. Two vehicles speed off. I hear someone running away. About a minute later, I see a black woman running away from the gunshot, and two white guys approach her (looks like college guys, I live near a college). One starts yelling at her, asking who she is. She says she lives there and doesn't know what is going on. Then I hear the guy who was yelling at her, start talking to his friend(?). He says he can't believe they just shot some girl in the head. He told him to get away from there and that "they weren't wanted over there (odd phrasing to me)." He asks if his friend wanted to get shot, too (I'm assuming he didn't). The residents randomly start emerging from their doors. The guy above me comes racing out of his apartment and down the stairs, like he has just realized what is going on or some shit, and wants to be a hero. Too bad he's like 2 minutes late. People start getting in cars, or just walking toward the scene. They want to know what happened, but I'm pretty damn sure I know what happened, plus I don't feel the need to go rubber-neck. A couple minutes later I hear the sirens approaching. I see a fire truck drive by. A few minutes after that, I hear more people talking. They are saying it was a "racial thing," I'm guessing it was a white and black woman involved in the fight. I hear someone crying hysterically above me.
This morning I check the news. The various local news stations all have the story, with slightly varying details. One said it was a "party." Another claims multiple gun shots (there was only one). I could link them, but they have some specifics about where I live, and I'd rather not put that on TL. They all agree that it was a "road rage" incident that somehow spilled into the apartment complex. I'm not sure how they came to this conclusion, but whatever. On my way to work, in the parking lot, I see a tow truck drive up, and some guy at his car with the back bumper all smashed, and indicating to the tow truck driver how someone drove into it (I'm assuming it was last night, but I can't be 100% sure). I see a local news van opposite the front gate when I drive out.
Here's the thing. I've lived in some sketchy towns in the past, and some equally sketchy apartments. I've heard fights. I've had people attempt to (casually) break in. I've had a bum rummage through my garbage, and someone was stabbed not all that far from where I lived in another town. I've never actually heard someone get shot in the parking lot. And this is definitely the "nicest" apartment I've lived in. What really gets me is we have two forms of security right at the front. The first is a gate that you need a code to drive through. Now, I'm not stupid. I know this isn't some impenetrable barrier of safety. I know a lot of people probably have this code, and that you can fit 2-3 cars in behind the first car entering the code. I have no illusions about this thing keeping out burglars, or even limiting it to just residents driving in. But it can't even stop "road rage" incidents from spilling into the parking lot? If it can't do that, does it do anything at all (besides annoying the fuck out of residents)? I believe the victim (and maybe even the suspect) live at the apartment, though, so that could explain how it got open. The second form of security is a cop that lives right next to said gate. This is also where the shooting took place. Like right outside his fucking doorstep. Now, I don't know his schedule. Maybe he was on a shift, or even out of town. But it seems like if you are there (and maybe he wasn't) and you are a cop, you'd respond to loud yelling that goes on for about 5 minutes. Even if you are off duty.
I never thought of my apartment as especially safe, and I know stuff like the gate is there largely to give the "impression" of security. But, it is a bit unsettling to know that all this can happen pretty close to where I sleep. Even with a gate and a fucking COP right there, ostensibly to prevent exactly this sort of thing from happening (I believe the apartment complex even pays the cop as a "security guard" on the side). I'm just surprised this happened in what is probably the "best" place I've lived so far.
(Also, please don't turn this into a "gun control" thread. As a side note, this happened in the town where "every land owner is required to own a gun," which pro-gun people like to cite as having low crime because of this law. I'm not going to name what town it is explicitly, but you can probably find it with some googling. It is also worth mentioning that this law isn't enforced at all, and was never designed to "make the town safer" back when it was passed in the 1970s. So the concept of more people around having guns, obviously isn't deterring some people from still shooting. That is all I want to say about "gun control.")
Edit: According to the news, it was an early 20s white female (I'm guessing a college student) that got shot in the head. She is in the hospital in "not good" condition. They are looking for a black female suspect, as well as the two vehicles I saw drive off.

I wouldn't be surprised if someone that was closer got the tag numbers, but I can't be sure on that.

I was on the ground-level. Like I said, I live a building down from the incident, so there are 3 buildings closer to mine. From what I could hear, there were quite a few witnesses. The college guy shouting at the black woman clearly knew there was a black female involved (and was probably the shooter). He might have even seen the shot.
If the police come around asking for more information, I'll tell them what I know. But based on what was released to the media, it seems like they already know a lot more than I do (I have no clue how they know it was a "road rage" incident, probably someone closer than I was heard what was actually said).
I do wish I could have seen the plates on one of the cars, as that would have been valuable information probably.

Well in that case. Just talk about it with someone outside internet if you are still in shock. You have to get out what you fear/think etc...

Rather, was it a sort of dual sound or just one sound?
If there was a loud bang and a crack, the round was supersonic so it's likely 9mm or .40; otherwise it's pretty much definitely .45. That's assuming it was a pistol, though.

Yeah, I told my firefighter/emt friend about it (who is used to seeing some twisted stuff). We were both pretty surprised it happened where I am living now of all places.

It was just one bang (no "mini-sonic boom"), so I guess a lower velocity round.

You don't hear a second/separate sound when a pistol fires a supersonic round vs a subsonic round. It does have a slightly different sharpness to it, but a non-expert won't be able to tell the difference as you are requesting.
Also, the police can quickly figure out what was used, so there's no point in the OP trying to troubleshoot what round it was. In fact, there are several revolver calibers it could have been... who knows.

Update:
The victim has died (it sounds like she was dead when she got to the hospital, not 100% sure). The suspect has also been caught and charged with murder and aggravated assault. It appears that the victim lived in the same apartment complex, while the shooter does not (she actually lives in town about 20-30 miles away, what she was doing out here is unknown).
They are still calling it a "road rage incident" that spilled into the parking lot.
