So in just over 24 hours, I'll be leaving my small hometown of Singapore, where I'll spend just over four months as an exchange student at the University of Toronto.

Now I've never set foot outside Asia and Australia, and I've never lived on my own for an extended period of time, so while I'm super excited for the trip, it's hard not to be worried about how I'll adapt to the different environment. So I would really appreciate it if my fellow TLers can help me with the following questions:

1) What's the culture like?
2) Student life?
3) Is there any BARCRAFT TORONTO?? :D

I'll put up more questions when I think of it, but many thanks in advance for any help and advice!

Toronto is boring as hell, you're missing out with Montreal man ):

1. Canadian culture has no identity and you'll soon learn there a ton of Asians & Middle-Easterns in Toronto. So if you feel ethnically-compelled to stick with your own kind, you'll fit right in (haha). The Canadian culture is similar to the American one where consumerism is quite popular and a lot mannerisms are found throughout the Western Hemisphere. Tons of jaywalkers (people who cross the street whenever they feel like it), tourists and beer-lovers. Also, tipping in restaurants in customary and everyone loves All-you-can-eat sushi. Toronto is a bit like Chicago, but I guess that's a debate to some.

2. Depends what kind of person you are. Clubbing is pretty popular, nerdfests as well.

3. Esports Canada is the homestead of Barcrafts and events in Toronto and all of Ontario, tons of events (: UoT even has a CSL team and I think a lot of eSports supporters are from U of T.

I live about an hour out of Toronto and every time I visit people there there's always a ton of options for things to do, as long as you can find some people who share your interests you should have a really good time The only issue I can remember having with U of T is the traffic

Toronto is a diverse place. It's much more of a soup than a melting pot. In the US people tend to assimilate the culture and blend into one liquid metal alloy. In Canada you still see the individual carrots, chicken, ant tomatos.

There were barcraft as of 2011-2012 but I'm not sure about it now.

There are however Game nights hosted by the UofT cs department where people go play a SC tournament and then maybe hang out afterwards if there's a stream.

Life is what you make of it. Are you living at CC?
I think in our modern age technology has evolved to become more addictive. The things that don't give us pleasure aren't used as much. Work was never meant to be fun, but doing it makes us happier in the long run.

1) Culture is a giant mix. There are a lot of asians at UofT so I think you'll fit right in. All of them love sushi, go karaoke and hanging out together and such. You'll probably experience some new things but I don't think you'll have any issues adapting.

2) Really depends on your program. If there isn't a lot of work to do, you can probably spend most time outside just going karaoke, sushi, concerts etc... so ya, depends on your workload.

3) I have no clue since I don't frequent barcrafts.

Hope that helps

I certainly knew barcrafts happened as of like a year ago, I'm sure they're still going on now maybe more / less often, I'm not very connected with SC2 anymore.

Also Toronto's pretty sick, but as people said, a little bland at times.

Don't forget that WCS season 3 finals are going to be in Toronto on October 26 and 27, so if you like Starcraft it would be a great chance to see it live.

Welcome to TDot, first things first, idk what Torte is talkin bout, Toronto is the sh*t hah :D

1) What's the culture like?
Very diverse. Toronto has different people from everywhere. There's a "Little _____" part of town for basically every different culture. If you're near the annex (which I assume you'll be cuz of campus), there's mostly a huge student/young people culture and you'll have tons of fun. Clubbing is very popular here, tons of stuff to see and go to too, there's always events, pretty much every sports team you could want, there's Wonderland, the city is amazing for foodies, etc etc

2) Student life?
Wasn't here as a student, but like I said, partying and clubbing is very popular, as well as concerts and tons of events. If you're in Canada, this is where you want to be.

3) Is there any BARCRAFT TORONTO?? :D
Not sure, but WCS Global finals is coming here :x
