Hey Guys!

I just wanted to share with you the video I created on Women in eSports. Khaldor gave me the idea, and I think I have a pretty fresh and different perspective of understanding for both sides.

I broke the video down to 6 parts, and an ending to shout out to some of the women who make eSports great!

Part 1: A Woman's Experience

Part 2: The Community's Point of View

Part 3: Society and Sexuality Stigma

Part 4: Why Women Get More Attention

Part 5: Women Joining Pro Teams/Companies

Part 6: Suggestions and Hopes for the Community

I hope you guys enjoy this and get something out of it. It's one of my first completely serious videos, but the ending isn't without some Zerg puns.

Khaldor's Reddit post:
http://www.reddit.com/r/starcraft/comments/1j7h2n/women_in_esports_view_of_both_sides_by_tara/

Thank you!
Tara

Me thinks Khaldor want in ur pants... Men only do the "women perspective thing" when they want to get layed.. haha

As i see it, the more women the better! Its wierd that there only is 1 girl performing really well in sc2 esports and the rest are guys... That not a good and balanced representation.

Judging by the comments on reddit, this is generating some controversy. Also, lol at destiny saying, "no comment" XD.

Haha, the Destiny reply was quite funny yeah.

To be honest, I've gotta look at this and agree on most points. Some very good points were raised that we as a community SHOULD improve but will be very hard to actually get done at any point in the near future. Because as you said, we're a 'tight-knit' community. We'll need a bigger community for stuff like this to go more smoothy and acceptable in general.
I feel whenever I watch a girl's stream, they're either incredibly unskilled & looking for attention really badly (Because why would you stream at a low level if you have nothing else to add..?) or genuinly interested in the scene. Then again, those people mostly don't stream. I guess it's to do with the fact that I've been brought up the way that people who invest so much in their looks & attention, mostly don't have the best intentions. Even though this is not necessarily always true. It's really about consistency, staying in the scene, and slowly, little by little you'll gain enough respect.Just like Megumixbear, I think she was pretty unpopular at the start, but gained respect over time (atleast by me.)

Usually people fall into the super professional persona or latch onto something that they know resonates with the 'fans' (sometimes that means putting on a fake front) but in terms of exposure they need to do this to stay relevant.

Like male casters, reporters, players if women show an aptitude for their job then they should be rewarded. Its a male dominated field, eSports, pretty much the same as mainstream sports and its shows as there are less women in 'higher' positions in basketball, soccer etc. Maybe its a case of the main audience being familiar and comfortable with male figureheads, maybe the industry is archaic in its outlook or maybe there is not a big enough sample size of women entering the 'scene' to facilitate growth. Personally a tournament does not change regardless of the male/female ratio working on the event.

Nice video, its difficult to dismiss it on a whim seeing as you clearly put work into it and enjoy esports so much.

How is that weird?
No woman have shown the dedication/skill to perform at any decent level except for Scarlett.

People who get more attention than they deserve from their results get negative reactions. This applies to the majority of women due to their scarcity, but also to male community figures to some extent (eg: destiny, incontrol have gotten flak for not performing well despite being major figures).

Women will have more position in the scene when they earn in the same way any man does. I have immense respect for Scarlett because I learned about her by hearing she was winning games and beating Koreans, rather than part of some 'omg girl joined X team' announcement. Similarly, January of Khan got shit done and can't be disregarded for her achievements.

You got my respect for that Tara. I personally encountered your work from the "dark" site of the internet aswell, while most people would probably hold that against you, for me that gives you instant credibility. If you were in it for the money, there would be more to grab, faster.
I really enjoyed the video, especially because it was more serious, yet your lightheartedness keeps it entertaining. I hope to see that side more often from you! Keep up the good work girl.

I think the Part:3 of this video goes into all aspects of (American?) life, not just gaming. Being sexual on either side is looked down on as crazy/bad/not right.

This needs to be changed! I think this kind of discrimination is stronger than anti-race or anti-... anything else kind of prejudice.

Looks aside, you seem like a genuinely happy and positive person. That's a really rare quality, and makes me root for your success. TotalBiscuit made some good comments on reddit. I agree that you seem very stiff on camera and talk far too fast. Hope you continue refining camera presence and editing.

Personally I don't agree with the "I'm only expressing my sexuality and deserve no criticism for it". I do think there are lines to cross where it becomes intrusive and disrespectful to others, and it is unfair to the girls who recognize those lines to insist that there are or should be none. It's a tough issue though and hard to pin down.

Anyway, I enjoy your presence in the community. Good luck.

Just watched your vlog, and although I've never seen your stream before it seems like you've got a down to earth and reasonable argument here. I think it's only a matter of time until things start to settle down and we see more women being treated respectfully and less as a novelty in the community. Like you said in the video, good looks alone probably won't sustain long-term twitch viewership and anyone who is trying to capitalize on that is either going to have to adapt and create quality content or run the other way.

That being said, there will probably always be obnoxious trolls getting in the way of progress (as there are for most things in life) so the sooner we can collectively ignore and shut down those voices the better. I remember hearing about Maddelisk once getting bombarded with requests to turn on her webcam only to respond by pointing the camera directly at her feet. I'd imagine that the trolls probably turned off her stream pretty quickly after that.

This is a spectacular vid. I agree with all the arguments except I feel like the haters/trolls will not go away anytime soon.

Thanks so much for watching and replying, guys! I really appreciate all of the feedback and the support, as well as the criticism! I definitely respect everyone's opinions and will take them into consideration.

I hope just a couple people who were a bit in the dark about the situation and how to handle it now understand the other side, and maybe even the side of the community, a little better!

You guys rock, never stop!

I just looked at Tara's reddit profile and it's honestly crazy how many downvotes all of her posts are getting when they are all reasonable. WTF. This community really disappoints me. I have a couple friends who are girls and play dota here at my school, I've played with them (sometimes they use voicechat) and it's insane how much shit they get for absolutely nothing.

This is not an issue with trolls, on a lot of levels it's straight up bigotry. It doesn't stop at the attitudes against women, (though it's probably one of the worst problems) but homophobia, xenophobia and just plain racism are also huge problems. Until all the big and influential members of the community actually step up and consistently dissuade this type of behavior the community is not going to see any serious change I don't think. It comes down even to simple things like language use. Half of the things people say online they would never consider saying in person, simply because they are insulated from the consequences of such actions through the relative anonymity of the Internet.

e: as a good (read: disgusting) example of this, read any of the top comments on this video on youtube. Youtube comments are generally shit, but in this case we know that the people commenting on the video almost certainly play Starcraft.

Yeah the comments were like 100% positive on the video until it hit Reddit. IMO, Reddit is terrible when it comes to downright unexplained hatred, especially toward the content I post or produce. TL is more mixed, and of course my own subs are more supportive.

Most of the people posting negatively either did not listen to the video at all, or just decided to disregard anything I say and continue to be the examples of things I talked about in the video. Hahah. -.-'

I think these videos are often speaking to the lowest common denominator in esports. Trolls tend to be a great deal more vocal, and get a lot more attention, than the majority of people whom I think overall behave in a rather mature and respectful way.

I also think the kind of attention a girl gets in esports depends a lot on how she presents herself to the community. If a female gamer presents herself sexually, like tara babcock, then she can expect people to respond to her sexually. Everything she does will be framed in that light, the same way that popular/infamous streamers like idra, destiny, and avilo have all of their content framed in a certain light as well. I think the best example of a female gamer being treated reletivaly (and surprisingly) fair by the community is Scarlett. Considering her rather unique circumstances, I think overall the community has been very mature and respectful to her. It could also be said that, do to her unique circumstances, she hasn't been sexualized nearly as much as other female progamers, and the community reactions to her might have something to do with that. I think its because she behaves exactly like a progamer and performs like one too, making her largely indistinguishable from her male peers.

I'm not allowed to express my love for such a sexy KHAN uniform? Whatever I don't mind a mod note. I hope OP didn't misunderstand though.
All I meant to say was: Wow the uniform. Pics pls. Pretty good vid. Make vid about the uniform pls.
If that wasn't clear enough I'm sorry, I was merely trying to be a bit 'clever'.
