I"m thinking driving across US near the canadian boarder along highway2 Or maybe on highway 20. Overall the drive is from portland/seattle all the way to Boston. My question is we'll be crossing many states in the northern middle part of the U.S. I just want to make sure they're not some racist guys that will kill me. So northern middle US is cool? I went from New Jersey to San Francisco by way of New Mexico, so I can't speak for your whole way, but from Indiana eastward you'll be fine, and I'd assume folks west of that are hospitable as well. So much of that trip is through nothingsville. Personally, driving through endless plains was surreal for me in its own way. There's nowhere around where I live that you can see for 20 miles pretty much all around you. If you can find the odd hill in the middle of those plains, you can even start to see the curvature of the earth. | ||

i mean, i know it is a tired trope, but i could at least understand being a little hesitent about the south if you are not white... but to be afraid of that about areas you dont even know at all?? might wanna rethink who is being a bit unfair (or even bigoted) here... | ||

the south is scary af dude when i was little and we drove across mississippi, it was always lock the doors, drive all night so we wouldn't have to stop there. especially in the smaller areas you can see some scary things up north on the other hand, kinda meh. But don't be fooled into thinking that it's not a valid concern | ||

The south isn't some super-hostile hellzone where everybody and their mothers fly Confederate flags and drive big trucks with a shotgun and white cloak in the back. If you're Asian, people will stare at you because there are no Asians there for some reason. Sometimes you'll run into a lone idiot who will chew you out for being "un-American" or some shit if you have an accent and you aren't white, but that's about it. Maaaybe you'll run into a gang or a racist that is actually dangerous, but that's like running into a bear up north or something. Just stay out of the obvious bad places and you'll be fine. | ||

It's safe. And although there is a lot of nothing in the middle e.g. Kansas and Wyoming, it's still pretty fun if you are with the right people. EDIT: Plan your trips well so you are not sleeping in some sketchy town out in the middle of nowhere. I stayed in St. Louis, Denver, and Salt Lake City. | ||

I'm chinese. thanks. People in Idaho/North Dakota are questionable folk (maybe a little weird and overly-secluded), but other than that, it's not like you're in the South or something. Once you hit Minnesota, you'll have smooth sailing from there. A few tips on traveling in the north: Wyoming can be pretty beautiful, but once you get into the eastern part of the state and into North Dakota, there is fucking NOTHING there, so be prepared. When you're in Idaho/Wyoming/ND/etc, you need to fill up at every gas station you hit. If you're traveling in the summer, it'll quite hot and, once you get into Minnesota/Wisconsin, quite humid. Be prepared. If you're actually traveling in the northern part of the states, watch for animals. Deer are most likely, and you'll probably see a lot of 'em. Will fuck up your car worse than you fuck up the deer. Don't fuck with a moose, and don't gawk at a bear, either. Random fact: Minnesota has a very large bobcat population and the biggest Timberwolf population outside of Alaska in the country, so there are actually dangerous animals in the northern part of the state. Once you get out of Minnesota and partway through Wisconsin, you'll be out of the "middle of nowhere zone where there's a gas station once every 200 miles". Well, that doesn't even happen in Minnesota, but once you're in southern Wisconsin, you're in a generally more urban area. | ||

I doubt you'll see those anywhere except southern California, the Northeast, and maybe a few other highly urbanized areas? Won't see any of those in the northern part of the country. | ||

I'm chinese. thanks. my girlfriend did a similar drive from vancouver, WA to milwaukee, WI. she did it in 3 days and that's including stopping in pullman at WSU from some famous ice cream shop, taking photos in front of mt rushmore (which i guess is a little underwhelming? lol). and a couple other minor stops. like others have said, once you get into minnesota you're fine. also, i was surprised at how populated milwaukee was. just watch out for the left lane exits. for some reason they are all over the place in the northern midwest. | ||
