They can be a pain. Or so I've heard. To be honest, I don't even know where to start when it comes to these things.
What should I do? Where should I go?
Do I go to my school or search for some on the internet? Will I even have a chance of getting something? What if I do everything it says and all I get are ESPORTS Dollars? How do i tell they are legit? What if they turn out to be a scam and use what was sent to do home work assignments or do something silly like paint a horse's mane the color of the rainbow?

I seriously am going to need any money I can get, and I'm not someone who always gets A's and B's so I can't use that to my advantage for things like this. I'm a good writer when I am given a subject that I can get creative with for an essay, but I would probably make a terrible journalist. I have started learning some programming, but I'm not very far yet. I did well in my biology and us history classes getting A's and B's throughout the past year. I am a sophomore in HS. I am planning to major in Computer Science, with 2 high school java classes in the next 2 years and 1 C + ObjectiveC + iOS programming class done(all the programming classes are year-long, the iOS class being meant as an 'intro to computer programming' course). I am continuing to learn more programming during my own time.
If anyone can help me with this, and point me in the right direction I would be grateful. Thank you.
edit: Actually, I guess I'm a Junior now since it is the Summer.

i don't like this defeatist attitude. why do you think you can't get As and Bs? (really, you should try for all As if you need scholarship money.) i'm a pretty strong believer that if you're anywhere near average intelligence, you can get all As in high school.
the easiest way to get money from colleges is to get almost all As and get a high SAT/ACT score.
1 of 2 things will happen: 1) you will get accepted to less competitive schools with a really nice scholarship package. this is a good strategy if you apply to schools where you're easily in the top quartile stats-wise 2) you will get accepted to a highly ranked university with a really nice financial aid package. elite schools have huge endowments and if your family makes below X amount, they will provide you with a generous finaid package that lets you attend for free or with minimal loans.

this 100x over. unless you have a genuine, really bad learning disability (ie something worse than add) you should be able to get at least b's. high school is all about effort. shit, college is too even. but hs, it's mostly showing up, doing your homework and then youll know your shit.
academics are obviously the quickest route to money. if not through grades, then your sat. idk if they still do it, but for many years, you could get $$ for scoring high enough on the practice tests. there are also tons of smaller scholarships (like under 1-2$k) for sports, various ethnicities, churches, etc. your guidance counselor probably has info on local stuff

I got my scholarships mostly through a combination of grades and act/sat scores. Several of the colleges I had expressed interest in offered me something based off of just those scores/ my gpa. If you are still a sophomore, then you still have a lot of time to get those grades and sat scores high enough to get some decent money in return. As someone above said, just do your work in high school and make sure you know the material well enough for as many A's as you can and it'll help out so much. And don't get overwhelmed by this stuff, you are still a sophomore and that's a full year before a lot of people even think about scholarships or what to major in so you have an advantage there. Use this time to call financial aid departments of any colleges you are thinking about applying to and ask them. They deal with this stuff every day and can probably give you some good advice you won't get here on TL. There are lots of local volunteer, church, sports, leadership, etc scholarships out there that they can point you to.

You might want to consider need-based financial aid. These aren't scholarships. I know that the Ivies and other top-tier institutions offer need-based aid.

highschool is about effort, not intelligence, they basically grade your ability to put in effort which is why you earn scholarships, because they know you have the willpower to put in the effort required to learn.

If you want a scholarship, study your fucking ass off and you will get it.
That's all there is to it.

nah, i was high through most of high school and they still paid for over half of my college education at a private university. dont overthink it man.

Most of the people I know either got scholarship money from the school they applied to or financial aid. I'd say if you're planning to go to a public university, you'll probably get scholarship money (assuming your academics are good), and if you're going to private university you'll probably get financial aid. Scholarships that you explicitly apply for are great if you can get them, but generally very competitive because everyone wants free money. If I were you, I'd focus on making good grades and scoring well on your SAT.

Yea, scholarships that you apply to have insane competition, and folks wasting time gaming probably aren't in that league! Lol
It's scholarships that are automated if you meet certain thresholds for GPA, Act/SAT for mostly state schools that may require specific majors (like engineering) that you should aim for. Many of my college buddies at CMU had backup colleges with full rides in states like FL. What state are you in OP?

Why don't you just take out student loans? A four year CS degree from a decent school will get you a job almost immediately out of college and you can pay them off in a year or two.

Ok thanks a lot guys. Although, aren't there scholarships that you have to apply for? I posted this partly because I remember reading about there being scholarships you have to apply for that little to no one applies for because they forget all about applying for them, and the scholarship gets wasted.

I don't think that I 'can't' get A's and B's, it just is that I tend to reach a point when I start slacking off and my A's and B's in some classes turn to C's. In a couple classes I barely pass, like my Geometry class last year.
I am a huge slacker when it comes to home work and I made a habit of doing things last minute and sometimes even waiting until home room to do it. I lack self-control to get myself to sit down and do the dang thing. :/
Thanks for the advice!
