For the writing I chose to focus on dialogue. So while in a normal story I would have created a heavy description of the characters I opted not too because that is not my focus for the writing today. Hopefully you enjoy it!
A knock hit the door while Dorian sat contemplating his daughters impending suitors, “Come in” he said quietly.
“Sir, Lord Taurus would like a world” a man said without opening the door.
“I’ll be out in a minute,” Dorian said while standing up preparing for the walk to wherever Taurus may be. He picked up his book to take with him, quickly unlit the candles and opened the door to be met by a hired hand of Taurus. He was wearing a simple white shirt with brown pants and a small dagger at his hip. “Good to see you Harmon.”
“Good to see you as well Lord Dorian” Harmon said while leading him through the corridors of the castle.
“So what does Taurus want from me on this day?”
“Lord Taurus,” Harmon said emphasizing the lord “didn’t mention it, just said to find you quickly.”
“Peculiar that he did not tell you what he wanted, he usually does if I’m not mistaken. Most be of some importance then,” he said ignoring Harmon’s attitude from before. They had begun walking up the spiraling staircase of one of the four corners of the castle and on his last count it had been 500 stairs.
“In recent times he has become quieter to the point where even Lady Haley has become worried.”
“Well let’s see if I can fix this” Dorian said while they approached the door. “That dagger is practically dull Harmon, not very intimidating.” Harmon had a quick look at his dagger and a look of shame went across his face but quickly vanished as he knocked.
“Who is it?”
“Lord Dorian is here to see you Lord Taurus” Harmon said.
“Well send him in already.” Harmon opened the door without looking inside and held it open for Dorian.
“Thank you Harmon” Dorian whispered as he went into the room to be met by Taurus silently staring outside through the only window in the room.
“Please take a seat,” Taurus said without looking away from the window. Dorian slowly approached the seat on the other side of the desk and saw a map with figurines all over it representing battalions.
“I didn’t know we were in a time of war,” Dorian said while sitting down.
“We aren’t yet but with what has been going on it can never hurt to be prepared. You’ve been locked up in your chambers for so long you’ve been missing some key points,” Taurus said dismissively.
“Clearly you aren’t aware that even when I’m not around I still have more than my own set of eyes and ears looking around. I’m aware that the King and Lord Vayne are in a minor quarrel.” Taurus sat silently contemplating what to say next while Dorian allowed his eyes to wonder and get more of a read on what had been happening to Taurus. After more than a minute of silence, Dorian said, “So what did you need?”
“I need advice about what I should do?” Taurus said while turning to Dorian.
“We aren’t big players in this Taurus. The King doesn’t know us by name and we don’t even feel comfortable referring to him by his name when he is not around. Our job is simple, we choose the winning side if something happens. From what I can tell it will not even come close to a war. Vayne is far too smart to fight the King head on.”
“I’ve made vows to protect the king, though. I will not be known as the vow breaker if it comes to a war.”
“Choose the right side and you won’t have to worry that Taurus.”
“So what would you have me do?” Taurus quietly said.
“Start finding out which side the other lords are going to take. Find out if it will be based on geography or on something more. Go about it quietly though or you may get the attention who you will have wished you hadn’t. I’ll be back at this room at this time on the same day as this one in a week to see what you have found.”
“I look forward to it Dorian.”
“I do as well Lord Taurus. Now I’m going to go finish this up” Dorian said while lifting up the large tome that had been tucked underneath his arm.
“Why are you reading about all of the powerful families in the kingdom”
“Sharpening my sword in case the war comes around Taurus.” With that he got up and left with Taurus staring at him inquisitively.
