So today (or maybe yesterday due to timezones) I have been registerd on Teamliquid for 10years, posting about once a day. I used to be closer to two times a day but since the site grew you cant dabate anymore in the threads, plus I had a habit in reading the whole thread before I posted. I still come here several times a day. Actually I started hanging out here alot in december 02 but since everyone was so good here (worst were something like mid masters today I'd say) I felt like I was too bad to sign up. But then I quit competitive play and since I didnt really play (I still played alot) I figured I'd sign up anyways.

At first I was planning on doing a epic post of all the idiots and trolls during history such as Carlodajin... who possibly was the most retarded guy to ever set fot here. Unfortunately I cant use the searchfunction to find his posts about the [gm] tag but god was he annoying. But there were many others, maybe sun or orangeterran or? Anyways I figured that it would take too much work plus my initial failures in searching added up to disregarding that idea.

So I had to do something else and figured out that I should do some sience instead. I have (since bwchart came out 'D ) since the dawn of time been sweating when playing SC/BW and SC2. Also when I play while I have a flu or otherwise feel like shit I get much worse after playing. This got me thinking that I should monitor my pulse during playing and see what conclusions I could make of that.

So we have a 31year old competitive XC skiier. Assuming that gives me decent shape and 4 hours of SC to do the testing. I figured I should do some teamplay to guarantee the intensity in earlygame to even out the curve. I initially guessed that my pulse would be around 100-110 or so due to "feeling". My APM during the games were around 190 +-30. I think that APM should matter here while EAPM and skill is highly irrelevant. Also got eliminated but still in the game twice too, lowering the pulse.

So what did I find out? Well my pulse were around 85-100 during games and quickly dropped below 70 when searching. It was a bit tricky to see the display due to me being a shady individual playing in darkness. This was quite a bit less than I had expected and made me lower the effort when it comes to analasys. I did burn a little over 600kcal during the 4hours so if I was a progamer hitting 12h/day I'd burn 1800kcal just from the gaming. A bit more than a normal person would do iirc.

So in conclusion, playing SC is not a good substitute for long slow distance training. However it is most likely better than watching tv and on par with walking. Actually I have no idea what pulse I have when walking so disregard that.

10 years of TL and I didnt even manage to do a proper epic blog entry. I guess that sums it up quite well. I hope I'll see you in 10years from now.

What information did you use to calculate how many calories you burned by playing on the computer. Can you share the references?

I used a garmin EDGE 500 cycling computer that calculates it with the data from my weight, age ect. Dont know how accurate it is.

So if I understand you correctly, you are estimating your calories burned based off of your heartrate while playing a computer game using a tool that assumes you are cycling with the same heart rate? I'd be interested to know how close that is, but I'm guessing you are overshooting with your estimate.

Well I assume it calculates only based on heartrate alone. If i'd be cycling (more like rolling) or walking with that heartrate i'd be burning the same amount. What exatly you are doing comes more into play when we are talking about lactat levels and maximun pulse. Like I can reach my maxpulse when XC skiing, but if you have no technique you cant ski fast enough to reach that heartrate.

I'm interested to know if that's true or not. I think you use a lot more energy doing physical activity with a high heart rate than doing nothing with a high heart rate, but I'm not sure how big the difference is.

Another 10 year low count poster! See you in another 10.

Much like you, I tend to read entire threads before posting. I feel like I generally don't have much new to add to the conversation so I end up just not posting. Hence my very low post count even though I've been on TL basically every day many multiple times per day reading tons of threads.

10 Years for me November this year.

It's funny. I can still remember everything about when I joined TL.net. I was in this nice little library. It was dark out. I had joined a couple of other Starcraft forums before it. I remember not wanting to join TL.net because it took you 10 or so days before you could make your own thread, and I thought to myself "it'll be FOREVER before that happens!" Yup, I thought ten days was forever.

I also remember disliking my handle on other forums. So I thought hard before I chose my name. It was like naming yourself in Pokemon! Should I use my first name? Something related to the lore? It's got be cool, whatever it is. Ended up with one of my favorite handles of all time! I can't speak for anyone else, but it always sticks out to me when I'm scrolling down.

I loved the library I was in when I joined. I would print off 100 page FAQs for JRPGs. I was just learning about FAQs so I had no compunction about spoiling the experience for myself. I just saw it as a sweet way to get all the secrets! I am solely responsible for that library changing its printing policy.

It's also strange that I remember I was deeply, deeply unhappy then. But I can't remember why. There's some lesson in that.

I should technically be like 2007 (maybe 2006 I can't remember when I first lurked here but I remember going to WCG grand finals in 2007 so it was before that sometime ;D)

I wish I knew about TL back in the early days, I spent so much time on BW back then... like a silly amount, but I never knew about the competitive scene until 2006 or so.

Gratz on 10 years of TL! it's amazing how this site has such a strong userbase that keeps coming back! When TL was down for a few hours the other day I didn't know what to do with myself! haha. So here's to (hopefully) 10 more more years of TL!
