Hello random guy on the interwebz!
My name is Acurus #211, and I am a loseoholic.
I thought I would try and Blag about it to see if it might help. I have this problem when playing, that I guess a lot of people experience, but maybe not to the same degree that I do. I ENTER --> gg --> F10 --> n waaaaaay to early.
And the more I lose, the worse it gets. I have learned to stop playing when it gets to bad now. But there where a time when I would gg if I accidently made the 10/10 drone, instead of the 9/10 overlord, because I felt I had messed up to much, and could not win. Or if I accidently boxed the drones and hit "s". (I do this all the time because I'm stupid) This was when I was in Gold league, and it would not affect the game in any meaning full matter. But still, I just left the game and started a new one.
It is so irrational, and I know it, still I can not stop my hands from going "ENTER --> gg --> F10 --> n" I watch myself do it, and think : "You are so fucking stupid, you know that?"
So, how will writing a blag about it help? I'm not sure it will, but I figure it might do the following for me. First of all, I will try and write a post every day. Hoping that writing about it, and thinking each loss through more, will make me more aware of the problem, and helping me stick in games longer. It will also give me a reason to play every day, which will probably help my game a lot more than writing about it.
It will also give me a reason to write, and I really need to write more in general, cause I have a hard time putting my thoughts into words, and it is really annoying at work when trying to compose emails that have to look like they where written by a grown up. And I'm not really a grown up, just a kid trapped in a grown ups life.
So this is my plans for this blag:
I will play at least one game of starcraft each day, and blag about it. Some days I will try and include replays, and analyze the games myself. And If anyone read the posts and comments with their own tips, that would off course be awesome! I might also include VOD's of me playing. Not sure I will commentate while playing, but I will try and use it for my analysis.
And little about me and my Starcraft history. I first started playing Starcraft back in 1998. I played the single player and against friends at LAN's. I never really liked Brood War, as I felt there where to many units in the expansion. hehe
I think I played Starcraft BW two or three times on battle.net. And I got raped so bad, I never wanted to do it again. However, when SC2 was announced, I was a different gamer, and really wanted to get "good" at it. So I started reading up on it, watching it, and playing. And before I knew it, I was watching more Starcraft 2 then regular TV, and still do. It is so fun to watch! Can't wait for the first HotS season of GSL!
When it was first released I wanted to get into Platinum league. But when they introduced Masters league, I upped that to Diamond. And at the release of HotS, I finally made it!
However it is bitter sweet, as I have lost pretty much every game since then, and a demotion is not far away. I guess I just got a little lucky with the MMR at the beginning of the season. I do however think that I can play in the Diamond league if I can only get my ego and stupid feelings out of the game. And rather concentrate on playing my best. Because when I do play my best, I am pretty dam sick! :D
Hence this Blag.

honestly, if you want to get out of this (being like idra), practice never gging until your last building is eliminated. ok i dont mean hide pylons around the map or some shit and never gg that way, but get used to gging extremely late.
i used to do the same as you in BW. not a proper 4 worker split? ALT-QQ I'll take the draw and try again. I literally went through a stage where I didn't get past that split for like 10 games.
I see a cheese? fuck that rage first then ALT-QQ.
Too many bases and I can't stop it? rage for eco-cheese and ALT-QQ
Try to just never give up. No matter what. Once you get in the habit of it, you can start lessening the time where you gg. Maybe when there's just too big of an attack and there's no possible way to stop it, then you can gg after like the first 5 seconds of the engagement.
I wish you luck though.

Thanks! that sure sound like me.
Yeah I will definitely try and force my self to stick with it, even though I feel the game is lost. I just need to de-learn the F10-N muscle memory.

become less like idra and more like fantasy some pro tips: -never "gg" out of a game, just wait until your buildings are all eliminated -lift your buildings and fly them to the corners -hide drones/probes around the map and keep on building extractors/assimilators in obscure places. build new ones just before the old ones finish and cancel the one almost done -if there are islands on the map, just build infinity turrets/cannons/spores there -furiously micro like 2 units in your opponent's base to waste his time -even when you're beyond dead, get out some kind of cloaked unit(s) and be annoying as fuck with them
actual advice: just tell yourself not to leave games early and then don't leave them early. + Show Spoiler +On April 02 2013 12:49 FlaShFTW wrote: honestly, if you want to get out of this (being like idra), practice never gging until your last building is eliminated. ok i dont mean hide pylons around the map or some shit and never gg that way, but get used to gging extremely late.

I wont be doing your "pro tips", just because I do not want to be an asshole to everyone I play.
The actual advice is pretty good though. Although, I have done it, and it is not just that I gg and quit. But when I get into the "F10 --> n mood" It is not just that I quit, but I play very very bad to. So it is like a vicious circle that feed on it self. So just staying in the game, for the sake of staying there, won't really do much, I will still lose. I need to learn that I can win, even if I have done a few mistakes.

You're never entitled to a win. You're only entitled to playing the game.
From the Bhagavad Gita (ancient Hindu/Buddhist text):
"You have a right to perform your prescribed duty, but you are not entitled to the fruits of action".
I'd recommend you evaluate your motivations for playing SC2 and ask yourself, "Am I playing this game for the game's sake, or just as a means to an end?"

Lol, quiting the game because of worker splits messing up your game. When patch 1.5 came out i was getting 15 second lag at the beginning of the game and still winning in masters league.
Playing in the KR server, plat terrans don't know when to give up. 5 marines and 3 scvs vs 4 zeal and 3 stalkers, hold positions scvs so i can only attack with stalkers.

If you can, (not sure whether it is possible) actually disable the hotkey for f10, and make it so that you have to click manually. This might only be possible with a special keyboard though.
otherwise just remove the N key from your keyboard, so that you can't do it automatically, and have to click the leave button, giving you enough time to second guess yourself. Obviously you will have to rehotkey the build nexus button, but to be honest you should have done that anyway

Good blog, I think this is just one of many personal examples of why the 1.5x speed competitive game is very casual unfriendly. As many psychology threads have stated before, the urge to prove yourself to yourself is very big in starcraft 2. To my idea a lot more than FPS (which may seem odd, they should feel more 'personal'). I think it is exactly due to the fact that the game is so easy to learn and impossible to master. You know it reflects you and your limit, in the most honest way possible.
I love the game, but I prefer 2v2 because it makes me feel like I can push the blame on my partner if we fail (even if I know I screwed up, I think to myself, well maybe, if he...perhaps...).
I have read a great book that speaks about how you can help obliterate this feeling that the game reflects you and your skill (ceiling). I think it's called somehting like 'How to become a professional', but I read the Dutch version some years ago and I can't seem to find it. Basically what the book states is that anyone can become a professional at anything if they invest more than 10.000 hours of intense, focused, true hours into practicing and perfecting whatever they want to become a professional in.
This means that my former statement (the natural feeling you get in the game) that you are seeing your own failliure in a game of 1v1 of a true reflection is false.
You can do better, but you can only do better if you accept that the one who beat you had more time to practise his mechanics (perhaps even through a build that works good against just your build).
To solve this problem, make some rules for yourself. Starcraft 2 is not a game you play to win or prove yourself. You play it for fun. The moment you feel frustrated, tally it on a notepad and ignore the feeling - go on with your game. Play for a few hours (4 or 5) over the course of a week and then count how many times you have felt frustration. Then wonder for yourself: Is this really worth it or should I just enjoy Esports?

I ran across 2 guys on the Korean ladder who boxed all their workers and clicked on a single mineral patch, thus sending all the workers to one mineral patch at the same time, making for a slight delay in mining time, and they ragequit just for that.

The absolute worst thing as terran is if you spam and accidentally hit s (default hotkey for scv) and all of your scvs just derp around.

Same way with zerg (have to hit S to select larva) :D

A lot of us have this urge to gg too early, here are different solutions I recommand
Start-stop method - You play your best until you reach the point where you just wanna hit F10, then you take your eyes away from your screen, go back, repeat, this should help you last longer. Reinforcing your pelvic muscles - These are sooooo KEY if you ever wanna get rid of dis Think about sports - Yep, just when you start feeling that "gg urge", Rugby, Badminton, you know, they're all pretty effective
If you use all these tips, you can say 'bye' to premature gging.
