Following fatal incident, wounded pilot transferred from Chinese vessel to Japanese vessel
(AP) - Japan formally accepted the delivery of a Japanese pilot wounded in a mid-air collision and shoot-down incident earlier this week, after a Chinese commando team recovered their pilot and the Japanese pilot. Even though the commando team was fired upon by a Japanese UAV, with two fatalities reported, the Chinese side expressed a willingness to move past the issue, an action US analysts hope offers a climbdown from the recent set of incidents.

Colonel Wu Taifu blinked, unwilling to believe his eyes. The past day had started hard, with the casualties of Team Manta, but had ended on a high note with the peaceful transfer of the Japanese pilot and the departure of the Chinese delegation to Seoul. He had slept ten refreshing, luxuriant hours in the arms of his wife, the sleep of a warrior who expected peace. Now, with the clock nearing 0800, he realized he might never see her again.
Down the corridor, into the briefing room. Taifu buttoned up his blue jacket, hardened his brown eyes into something he hoped would convey the seriousness of the mood.
“Soldiers, we have been commanded by ATO River Snake to go into battle against the United States of America and the State of Japan. Our regiment's task is to eliminate the Guam Air and Naval Bases as viable military installations. We will...” He was interrupted by some of the younger staff officers, who rose and began to cheer. The pilots remained silent, however, knowing they might not make it back from the hardest target in the Pacific.
The colonel raised his hand, calming the tumult. “As I was saying, we will fly to the Guam launch points - 80 nautical miles for J-20s and 200 nautical miles for the H-10s - release our ordnance, and return. IOs and WSOs have programmed each bomb and missile with a target area. The fighters will launch 100 kg hitters with EO sensors to search for high value targets; the bombers will launch CJ-10s using GPS-INS to hit fixed installations. We have three squadrons of twelve J-20s each and a squadron of twelve H-10 bombers for the task, so this will be a near-saturation attack.”
He paused, made sure the regiment was paying attention for the next part of the briefing. “The mission will last about 7 hours. J-20 pilots, you will be flying escort on the way in until the H-10s reach 100nm outside their strike points; then you will peel off to your own strike points and release your ordnance upon hearing a regimental signal. Each aircraft has a separate ATO, so study your individual orders carefully. Now, get some food – we take off at 1230, and there is a refuelling outbound and possibly inbound if you are intercepted." Taifu paused, searched for a flat way to close the briefing. "This will be a challenging task, but - simply do our duty, and we shall emerge victorious." No euphoria or terror in the minds of his pilots - just a calm, lethal focus on the job at hand, Taifu hoped.

Seoul disarmament talks commence amid regional tensions
(Reuters) - The Third Annual Northeast Asia Security Summit began in Seoul today, amidst regional tensions between China, Japan, and the United States due to multiple fatal incidents over a set of disputed islands in the past few days.
...a live stream of the opening ceremony, which will be attended by secretaries of state and foreign ministers from the United States, China, Russia, Japan, Korea, the Republic of China (Taiwan), and North Korea. The heads-of-state conference is scheduled to begin Tuesday morning.
According to the joint opening statement, the aim of the talks is to create a multilateral disarmament plan between participant states, and encourage a formal method of political reconciliation between China and Taiwan, and North and South Korea. Most analysts remain skeptical that any real gains will be made however, in light of recent...
Kuroda Akio, slight, thin, reedy, age thirty-five, bent over the bright red metal of a trash can ten meters below the Seoul COEX building, dumpster diving. By Akio's feet sat a black duffel bag. He wore a flat blue sanitation worker's uniform and a billed cap pulled low over a pale, unshaven face. The uniform was loose and comfortable; a half-dozen large pockets allowed it double as a combat harness. It was also full-body, covering a tactical vest and crotch guard composed of plain-brown aramid weave over interlocking ceramic disks.
His expression remained blank as busy fingers found their target: a busted-up cardboard box holding a VSS Vintorez and two plastic magazines with twenty rounds of subsonic 9x39mm rounds each. He spread the magazines between two pockets of his jumpsuit and carefully zipped the silenced sniper rifle into the duffel bag. He adjusted his watch, tripped open its ears. Seven minutes to go. Then he turned and left, gliding noiselessly in his uniform.
He had trained for this act for months. Ever since he'd joined the Movement, they had opened his eyes to lethargy in so many of his countrymen. A nation of herbivores, they had called it, and they had instilled in him the necessity of dramatic action to galvanize the herd. Their Russian contact--a balding man with small ears and prominent front teeth that always seemed to be smiling--had provided the weapons through an intricate series of fronts and blinds. To the Koreans, the shipment would have seemed like something orchestrated by their northern brothers, but Akio had no intention of letting those misguided children claim all the glory. Vengeance must be public to have its desired effect. Today, he would avenge his daimyo, his idol, Ishii Shinobu, for the loss of that great man's son. Today, he would give his life for the Throne. Today, he thought, Kuroda Akio would prod his nation into reclaiming her rightful destiny.
He passed a few other maintenance workers in turn, making sure to slide close to each one. He felt a vibration on his wrist as he passed the final two men in the line; the watch had sniffed wires, the two were undercover security.
Akio noted it, stepped behind them, and followed them onto a service elevator, then onto the main conference floor. They turned a corner into a side hallway; Akio followed, removing his cap and crumpling it in his hand. The cap became an impromptu grip for a serrated, seven-centimeter glass blade sewn to its inside surface. He found the men fumbling with a door and closed the distance with two quick steps.
Akio surprised himself with the fluidity of his actions. His left palm muffled the rearward man's mouth, while his right stabbed deeply into the side of his neck and pushed the serrated edge forward, sawing open the carotid artery and windpipe. The other guard was fast but not fast enough; Akio executed a quick trap and control movement on the man's right arm, then rammed the glass tip just below the man's sternum, sawing back and forth, laying his aorta irreversibly open. Akio held the man down by the neck until the pulse in his palms faded to nothing.
The guards disposed of, the keycards and radio acquired, Akio found himself standing atop a utility catwalk watching the podium below and listening to the jokes passed between other, luckier men.
