Twitch TV Chat, what is wrong with you?

Ok I tried to emulate what I usually see in Twitch TV chat, and the stuff I see is so much more dumber than what I can come up with. We all know that Twitch TV chat can be a flat out disgusting cesspool of stupidity and nonsense. Some of the worst things I've seen people enter into the chat don't make sense in anyway shape or form. I'd rather have a troll or some negative nancy typing stuff into a chat than some of the mentally impaired comments people have in the chat, it's just that bad some times and I'm sure you guys know it.

(bit of a rant)

Nowadays, if I'm trying to study a stream or just enjoy the stream without any distraction, the chat immediately gets hidden. BUT I cannot help but wonder WHO THE HELL IS BEHIND THE SCREEN THAT TYPES THIS SHIT? Like if I had all the goddamn money in the world I would create a team, to freaking track down exactly who types in this shit, do a psychological examination of them, invade their privacy and find out their living conditions, income, nationality, etc, and then fucking publish it as a mockumentary. That way, whenever you see something beyond all comprehension in a chat or in a comment, you can nod your head and say "Yeah, I know what kind of guy this dude is in real life" and then feel like a devout solitude monk on a mountain with the peace you have achieved in your inner self.

*takes a deep breath*

No really it's a mystery to me... I don't contemplate it obsessively, it's more like one of those thoughts that cross your mind while you're sitting in traffic on your way home from work. I fantasize a picture of this oddball nerd sitting there and typing out a dumb comment, and how they would carry themselves in everyday life. Or are they really a skinny nerd? Could be a dumb muscle head, could be an idiot that won't get very far in life, who knows. Perhaps they have a reason for putting out so much nonsense in the Twitch TV chats. Okay, they're actually and officially diagnosed as mentally retarded... yeah that's the only reasonable explanation I can think of.

I'm not asking the world to all of the sudden flood the chats with fancy high quality discussion, I'm just really curious to find out who the hell types out comments that make absolutely no sense. My faith in humanity gets really shaken sometimes when I read chat, which is why I almost never participate and simply just hide the chat before I experience any trauma.

PAX east is rolling around soon, and I wonder if I can spot or narrow down any of those type of people...

Yeah yeah, another rant about Twitch TV chat, hopefully coming from a different angle though in order to not turn you off. I mean c'mon has anyone here actually met a person who YOU KNOW types out some of those nonsensical comments in chat? I'm really interested in knowing what kind of people they are.

Those people are just normal people, more or less. The anonymous nature and fast pace of twitch chat rooms encourage trollish behaviour. Just look at the face emoticons often used (Kappa, BigNig, OMGScoots etc.), its like they were made with trolling in mind. Other than that, most people just aren't particularly intellectual, no need to question your faith in humanity over some people jerking around in an online chat.

I would be sad if anyone could answer your question, since that would challenge my firm belief that the people who spam stream chat and youtube comments and the people who post on TL do not intersect.

There's 40,000 people watching IEM right now. I watched four pages of chat scroll by, and except for someone copy-pasting a tweet from Stephano, nothing posted was worth reading. I'm sure that a large number of those 40,000 people are reasonable, intelligent human beings who would enjoy a meaningful conversation about the games that are happening, but as you say, whatever they or you or I might say would be immediately drowned in a sea of idiocy. So what's the point? It doesn't take very many spam posters to create an environment which completely shuts out anything else, which is why it's all you ever see.

To hazard a guess at the answer to your question, I would think they're just average high school students. Give your average 15 year old anonymity and a large audience, and the results won't be pretty. The internet shows us this time and again, and we the silent majority (at least I hope it's majority) just have to do our best to keep faith in humanity.

Well if the majority of them are just really excited teenagers then that's understandable. I kind of just snapped a little in the heat of the moment when I made this blog. I just couldn't see from the point of view of these people and understand them. I'm not saying that above anyone else in intelligence, but some of the things I see in chats or general comments just go right over my head. Seeing it over and over, made me boil over and lose it... So I hid the chat which is something that I think should be done regularly in big chats. In the IEM chat I see the mods banning and deleting messages constantly, I feel bad for all the work they go through. Ugh, what an ugly rant.

It'd be awesome if twitch gave you the option to divide into really small (like 50 people ea) chatrooms so you could actually have a conversation instead of the current chat that goes way too fast for any response to happen.

This is... a good idea...

With the volume of thousands of chatters it's impossible to be singled out, so people just spew whatever attention-grabbing crap they can.

In my opinion these people are completely stupid (sorry if i may offend you),
but why do you have to be the biggest asshole in a pc-game stream chat, that´s pathetic, even more than the balance "talks" on twitch, please everybody make a constructive discussion thread on TL or spend your energy in a more constructive way.
(sorry for the hard words, but this is something i wanted to say since a long time^^)

Chats also vary in quality considerably between streamers. Different standards of moderation, viewership numbers, demographic that likes the player, etc

Streams of female gamers are even better because you know at least 50% of the people watching probably aren't wearing pants and exercising furiously

I've often wondered who these people are too. I hope to interact with them in real life as little as possible and would love to be able to take steps to forever remove them from my personal Internet experience. It's a shame...

actually i think in real life they are the shyest persons you can imagine who feel big when they can battle on stream chats.
It also hurts the scene a lot, that we have so much of these angry people try to make small thinks big and hate on everything they can.

It's exactly the same situation with Youtube commenters... I wonder what the hell these guys are like all the time. The internet is a strange place. For now, I just imagine they are a pack of hungry five year olds. The personalities fit.

Not only do you have the benefit of anonymity on Twitch chat, there's also the fact that Twitch chat tends to speed by rapidly, which reinforces the lack of repercussions from statements made because not only are they anonymous, but they'll quickly disappear in a second. This, of course, works in conjunction with the whole spontaneous/adrenaline fueled chat responsive to livestreams.

I'm terrified to be living amongst these people.

J/k I'm not terrified but I would love to walk up to them and say "No, please don't do things like this."

Why do you care so much about what happens in a fucking chat?
It's just people trying to have a little fun, calm down.

haha...oh my lord. The things you find annoying I find absolutely hilarious and adorable. I feel like everyone on twitch tv chat (or a lot of them anyway) are like little babies . CUTE LITTLE BABIES. And they get so angry sometimes, post random things that have nothing to do with anything aka "I LOVE BANANAS", post crazy things, post really witty hilarious things.

So many interesting people on twitch tv chat. A lot of the time its just boring chat related to the game, I hate it when that happens. When there's a korean pop song or something, then it starts getting fun and interesting.

The one thing I'll admit to doing is copy/pasting some ridiculous statement so 2000x people copy/paste it as well...sometimes that shit brings tears to my eyes.

The fullscreen button in a magical invention, though I do find that chat can be good to get a simple answer now and then during streaming downtime such as commercials or breaks with nothing happening on stream

I just try and tell myself this is a small representation of the actual community, and normal people wouldn't do this. I kind of find it like people watching on the internet, you see some pretty crazy things.

As more and more really young people are getting on the net, and into game communities
especially, without anyone else knowing who they actually are or their age, the childishness
sort of gets ingrained in the culture because the older users don't really stop to think about
it they just see it as normal behaviour and try to fit in.

A bit overly simplified I know, but that's one of the bigger reasons I think.

Yeah, chat can get pretty crazy on big streams, but I find that the chats on smaller streams are often quite nice. Meet some pretty awesome people, and some chats become almost like a big family after awhile.

I've have been spending several hours a day looking for a better answer and I have removed my previous post because I found an actual solution:

This extension "In My Own Words" lets you replace words/phrases that are either typos or that annoy you.

Such as:
"thta" into "that"
"Thta" into "That"
"I hate you" into "You are nice"

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/in-my-words/ifallpipodahhpbnemkhiddofdkhlekg/details

As far as emotes, this part of the solution it isn't nearly as elegant.
Get https://adblockplus.org

I strongly suggest disabling all of the "ad blocking" (uncheck the lists) because emoticons are not ads and blocking ads will interfere with your browsing and bring on frustrations of their own.

Go to "Add Your Own Filter" and add:

http://static-cdn.jtvnw.net/jtv_user_pictures/emoticon*

http://static-cdn.jtvnw.net/jtv_user_pictures/chansub-global-emoticon*

or you can add:
http://static-cdn.jtvnw.net/jtv_user_pictures/chansub*
or just use
http://static-cdn.jtvnw.net/jtv_user_pictures/*
while this should block all emoticons, both of those options will also filter out subscriber-icons next to the username

(i'm stopping editing this, and feel free to use this post to come up with your own variations to suit your needs)

Now just all emoticons are hidden, but the rest of chat is left alone.

I tried just blocking this from within the HOSTS file and from image settings in the browser and javascript bookmarklets, but for some reason, this extension was the only one that worked.

However, in chrome, (as an option) you CAN just block all images from justin.tv and twitch.tv and it WILL block the emoticons, but it also blocks the navigation images and mod icons, but if you don't trust or don't want to install that extension, this is an option. The video streams still work and the site is still fully functional, but you have to mouse over blank images and read the pop-up text to know what to click.

-----------------------

Although you can't filter irrelevant chat and phrases that can be useful but also annoying, between these two things, you should be able to drastically tidy up the chat to be more visually appealing to look at and read.

I wish I could have found a non-extension solution, but it looks like this is the only way.
