[Chess] Mundane Game

Have you ever had a game of Chess where when you play it, it feels blah, but when you go and analyze it afterwards moves you believed to be mistakes turn out to be the insane game winners?

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Bc5 3. Nxe5 Qf6

After an unexpected opening, I felt that black was just trying to rush a mate (Qf2#) and I can stop that by either going d4, Ng4 or Nf3, I didn't include f3 as I would lose material. During the game however I only thought of Nf3, although now I think d4 would have been the superior choice and I end up playing it on turn 5.

4. Nf3 d6 5. d4 Bb6 6. e5 dxe5 7. dxe5 Qf5

      I am extremely scared of 8...Qe4+ as I can only defend by Be3, in which I lose a pawn (9...Bxe3, 10. fxe3 Qxe3+), Qe2, in which I trade queens and lose the ability to castle or Be2, which only allows black to develop his pieces.

8. Nc3 Nh6

       Black wants to fork my Queen and Rook via Ng4 then Nf2.

9. h3! f6 10. exf6 gxf6?

       h3 blocks the Knight and then black makes his first major mistake by trading pawns.

11. Bxh6 Ke7? 12. Nd5+ Ke6??

      Why would black march his king out like that it's insane, and then I get all excited and practically yell at my monitor ''GET FORKED''.

13. Nd4+!!

       I rush the Nd4+ and after I move I realize there is a bishop covering the d4 square and my excitement goes away.

13... Bxd4 14. Nxc7+! Ke7 15. Qxd4

       Another fork saves my Knight and then Qxd4 prevents ...Qf2#.

15...Rd8? 16. Qb4+ Rd6 17. Bf8+!!

17...Kd7 18. Qxd6#

Right after Nd4+ I thought I made a huge mistake, however after I saw that he HAD to defend with the bishop and I saw the next fork, I was like wow.

Have you had a game where a move you made you think was a mistake but was actually genius? Also I think I could have analyzed this better but I think it was sufficient for me to learn from it.

4.d4 is probably better than 4.Nf3

6.e5 is kind of odd. You want to develop your pieces and get your king to safety (cause if you can do that without a hitch you've essentially won the game). Making more pawn moves is neglecting what should be your top priority. I like 6.Nc3, but 6.Bg5 should be fine as well.

On move 8, Black's threat of Qe4 is not actually a threat. You can defend with Be2 (or even Qe2) if he makes that move. Your knight is covering the e4 pawn as well. Either way, 8.Nc3 is a fine move, but you missed 8.Bd3, which forces him to move his queen again and let's you get your king to safety next move.

9.h3 is alright, but why not just 9.Bxh6? You mess up his pawn structure, and his knight is developed and your bishop isn't (so better trade for you, you essentially give up your undeveloped piece for his developed piece). Also as above, 9.Bd3 gains you a tempo as he has to move his queen.

On move 16 I feel like 16.Qe3+ is superior than 16.Qb4+. b4 is an odd square for the queen to be on, and your queen is much more active on the e file.

Just some random notes I thought I'd share about the game for learning purposes. Nevertheless well done
