I'm jealous of your mouse pad man!

We have the same Marshall at the rehearsal room. It's a really good amp.

Your set up looks like you play in a band as well. Do you? If so, what kind of stuff do you guys play?

Yeah i do. We play mostly classic hard rock/heavy metal covers with a few songs of our own; the song we cover atm are Rock Bottom, Doctor Doctor, Wasted Yeards, Highway Star and Paranoid.

Marshall Valvestates are awesome; i got that one for a ridicolous price (like 180 euroes when i've seen it go for 300+). It's a pity they aren't produced anymore.

I really like the sound of woodwind instruments. To both of you - do you play in a big band, orchestra or ensemble?

Have you heard of the band Jethro Tull? They've got a flutist/singer.

What genre do you normally play?
Good to know a fellow TL drummer / percussionist.

Nice!

We're playing rock, ska, punk, reggae-ish stuff at the moment. Loving the off-beats. We also cover some pop rock songs.

Definitely nice to know some fellow drummer/percussionists and musicians/music enthusiasts on TL.

Oh wow, we got almost matching tastes!
I play all of those genres, although I tend towards post / math rock more (toe, The End of The Ocean, Explosions In They Sky etc).

I've been playing flute for ~10 years; 7 were in a band, the last three have been with an orchestra. Love classical music. Did jazz band my senior year of high school too.

Yes!! One of my teachers in high school is a rock enthusiast, and he would always refer to me as "Jethro Tull" in class. X-D

I've always wanted to learn how to play the cajon. Is it something you think is doable for someone who wants to self-learn but has no drum/percussion background? I've played the violin for a long time and know about music though.

My little guitar <3

I've an old acoustic, too, but I have to replace the strings on it.

That's really cool. How long have you been playing?

Since March. I haven't been able to practice too much due to work, but I can play a few (easy) songs.
Guitars are amazing. I'm still awed by them, after almost a year of playing. So many things you can do and by just...plucking some strings.

Guitars are great. Whenever I get the chance I pick up a guitar and try to learn a few things from my band mates. I am really bad though. I do admire their ability to walk around the stage and to move freely and to all kinds of crazy stuff. Can't really do that behind a drum set or on a cajon.

Regarding the many things you can do by just plucking some strings. It's very similar with the cajon. I mean it looks like a wooden box but the amount of sound variety you get out of this simple box is just crazy.

Absolutely!!! (especially if you have some musical background from playing the violin)

It's a perfect instrument for self-teaching in my opinion. The great thing about the cajon is that it doesn't require independence of feet and hands which is something you keep drilling when you play a drum set. With the cajon you can focus on your hands and your hands only (you can add stuff for your feet later if you want). It also doesn't require sticks like a drum set which is another thing you won't have to worry about. All you got to do is hit a box in different places. At the beginning you need to distinguish between four different ways of hitting a cajon to create distinct sounds and accentuations. It's all fairly self-explanatory but I would definitely recommend to at least watch some Youtube tutorials about it.

One thing you will have to train and practice a lot for is to develop different kinds of beats. At the beginning you will find a beat that is quite easy to play for you and you will try different variations of it. At this point it is important to make sure to extend repertoire of stuff you can play on the cajon because if you don't you will soon realize that whenever you improvise that you'll fall back to whatever that really nice first beat was you taught yourself. A great way to develope independence from "standard go-to-beats" is practicing drum rudiments (paradiddles etc.) and trying different genres of music. (I loved to experiment with some Rumba rhythms, DnB and some jazz stuff for example).

Please let me know if you have any questions. I'm happy to share some experiences. Since you've played the violin, I think you have more than enough musical understanding to really improve quickly. The thing about a cajon is that you can take it anywhere to jam with some friends. You know that guy who takes his guitar to bonfires and sings and all the ladies go "oooh... sooo sweet." The cajon guy beats him by miles It's also a great stool.

One of my college majors is music performance actually, so I have played in quite a few wind ensembles and orchestras in my day.

I've heard of Jethro Tull, but I haven't really listened to them much. When it comes to flute, I mostly follow classical stuff like Bach or Mahler.

Erm that's kind of a tricky question cos we've gone through a shit ton of lineup changes.

I've been playing with the bassist for 3 years now, the other guitarist for one, the drummer for 9 months and we are looking for a new singer.

What do you guys play?

I, unfortunately, have no idea about any good bass books/tutorials/sites. Maybe some other TLer can help you out. Let's hope a bass player sees this I can ask our bassist though. I'll see him tomorrow and will post useful stuff here (if he knows any :p).

Dude! You're right. They are actually playing two locations really soon that are just a one hour drive away from where I live. Really bad days though (Sunday night / Monday night). I'll see if I can get a day off. That'd be epic.

Thanks for the heads up on the tour schedule!!! I wasn't aware their world tour started.
