Summary: Facebook wants my ID, any advice?
Hey,
Just wondering if any of you have encountered this problem.
About a month ago, Facebook quit sending me the confirmation codes via text message. After a few days of unsuccessful log in attempts, I contacted them, and they responded with something along these lines.
"We appreciate you contacting us, in order to remove the phone confirmation system, please send us a government issued photo ID to confirm that you are you."
I didn't send them the information, and now have no idea what is up with my account. I've tried contacting them and they have both times ignored my original message and responded with some lame auto response.
Any way to get in contact with a real person at Facebook and has anyone dealt with this before?
thanks,
Ender

make a new account don't give them the photo

Definitely don't give them the photo.... Facebook has turned into one of the worst sites for maintaining privacy rights.

I made a new account and they blocked it. Now they want me to submit my phone number to them so they can "prove it's me". wtf...

Had to be done, Sorry! I do understand how some people might consider using it to stay in contact when they move around the world or to pick up sluts or to groom buisness contacts. But if you can, take this opportunity and quit .

I would quit the Facebook, unfortunately my family are nitwits and that is one of the few ways to communicate across the ocean.

Check with your (country) laws.
I'm not even sure about German law, but I think not everyone can demand a "copy" of my ID (only authorized institution, dont know if Facebook is one of them). And I'm very sure that I'm allowed to redact (black, pixelate, ...) information on the scan which is not needed to "auth" me (so I'd black everything beside my name & birthday for FB).
Again check with your own laws.

Check with your government to see if Facebook can even make requests for this kind of information. If they can't, send them a strongly worded email saying $#%^ you. No but seriously, if that is the case do send them an email stating that they cannot legally ask for this information and tell them to fix the problem or you will take legal action or somesuch. In the USA all you should need is either the email associated, or the phone number, but never a government issued ID. As for Finnish law, idk...check with your govt.

I find it amusing that you guys are raging against Facebook doing this while Blizzard does the same thing as well when there's an authenticator issue tied to your account.

But Blizzard provides that service per the request of the user for the user's security for an optional service. Facebook never requests government ID's in the first place so there is actually no reason why they would need one to reconfirm since that data wasn't originally even on their data base. And I would imagine that if government ID's were a mandatory part of making a facebook account their user base numbers wouldn't be a tenth of what it is today.

confirmation code via text? Well, this all seems a little strange to me to begin with. Why did they do that in the first place? Never had to do anything like this.

Tomorrow i'm gonna call my local police station to find out if it's legal for Facebook to ask for my information. This is solid advice.
