A lot of people have been giving Bob Costas some heat recently for the comments he made during Sunday Night Football, in which he interrupted his half-time coverage to talk about guns. The most quoted statement is this:
"If Jovan Belcher didn't possess a gun, he and Kasandra Perkins would both be alive today."
The comments have gotten a lot of coverage in the media, on talk shows, on talk radio... Most people seem to think it was just bizarre to start talking about gun policy during the middle of a football game, and believe sports and politics should not mingle. A few have expressed much anger and even called for his firing, but he is unlikely to be fired for these comments. Still, these comments have attracted a lot of negative publicity, and a lot of unnecessary controversy.
Now, I just want to ask if Bob Costas should really be held responsible for these remarks or not. Why do we immediately jump to blaming this one person, when clearly there are other actors involved? I would argue he is not responsible for any of this, that there is another entity to blame: His microphone. No one has yet considered if maybe the microphone was to blame in this whole controversy. If the microphone wasn't there or wasn't turned on, it would not have captured his remarks, and there would be no knowledge of any of this. His comments would have caused no harm at all if there wasn't a microphone in front of him broadcasting them to the world. So maybe we should be asking why Bob Costas was given a turned on microphone instead of criticizing him or questioning his comments themselves?
This fact is clear: If Bob Costas did not have a microphone in that building, none of this controversy would have occured.
This is not the first time microphones have caused harm in someone's life. I'm sure you can think of examples yourself, when a turned on microphone caused immense controversy or even pain, emotional, financial, or otherwise. It could result in losing your job, being publicly ostracized, ending your marriage, anything. Clearly microphones need to be handled with great care. To ensure they are handled with care, we should consider granting permits for their use, so that only prepared and trained professionals could use them. We shouldn't allow just anyone to use microphones in any setting, there should be some controls in place to prevent these sort of events from repeating themselves into the future.
I know people are going to bring up the First Amendment, which guarantees things like freedom of speech. But it is obvious the founding fathers never intended any of this to occur. Microphones didn't even exist when that law was written, they probably could not have even foreseen something like a microphone coming into existence. And so their perspective was not rooted in modern conditions, and I'm sure many of them would have clarified the first amendment if they realized the consequences it would have in the modern world. They were just backward farmers, and it is clear they did not intend the law to be used the way we now understand it.
If that microphone had not been in that building, none of this would have happened. Bob Costas is not to blame, the microphone is to blame. And we as a society are to blame, for allowing a microphone to be turned on and placed in front of him.

I think it's silly to blame it on the microphone, personally.
It's not the gun's fault if I go on a rampage, it's just an inanimate object. and with that microphone comes responsibility, which he should've known by now, you can't just say anything that comes on your mind during a broadcast, especially a talk about guns at a football event. It's his fault only for the controversy he caused, and of the people who put him there in the first place.
By his statement he wished to do nothing but create even more controversy (hey it's not the man's fault it's the damn GOVERNMENT) and he was, or should've been conscious about that when he made it

Well, not everyone is given a microphone on national tv. Microphone control is a good thing, it's just that this time microphone control failed to filter out guys like Bob Costas.
