If you can look past his weird design I think Zidane is probably the best FF main character. He's not a mopey jackass like a lot of them (and when he does get like that he has a pretty damn good reason for it) and he fits the lighthearted adventuring theme a lot of that game has perfectly

You could argue for Garnet, I guess, but then you have to include Eiko as well.

Eiko isn't human

I'm aware of that, hence the 'but'.

It took me a long time to really get into IX, because the first disc kind of bored me. I'd take it up and put it down countless times over the years, before finally resolutely giving it a shot 2 years ago. Once the story really got going, it was definitely a fantastic ride. I'd put IX up there among my favorites now (but fuck all y'all haters X is still the best ^^)

I really enjoyed FFIX. It was my first Final Fantasy that I played by myself throughout the whole game (before then, I used to watch my uncle or brother play). Don't have to apologize, in my opinion, but I'm glad you did.

I accept your apology, haha.. but really, IX is amazing. It's one of the few PS1 titles I regularly replay.

9 is probably my favorite PS1 FF. I've played through it probably 3 times since I got it at release (a few years between each playthrough of course) and it's just as enjoyable everytime. The whole "learn a skill by using a weapon" system was pretty neat.

I really wish Beatrix was playable though...

FF IX is my favorite in the series. Played through it 4-5 times. Absolutely love the characters and story.

I wasted so much time with the chocobo treasure farming. For me 7>10>9=8.
7 is no1 because of nostalgia it was my first console game for the psx and I played with a friend together. We played the first weekend always the same because we did not know we need a memory card and every shop was closed.
The graphic was non plus ultra for FF7 time standards.
I never finished 9 because I wanted to have everything but my brother got angry and deleted the savefile. Only god knows how many hours were lost this day. The same happened to FF10

As far as I can tell, the idea of VII being overhyped is true basically because of how much freaking hype it gets. It's a REALLY great game for sure, but the amount of ballyhoo around it is ungodly hehe.

X is pretty good and XIII is the prettiest (derp).

Still need to play IV, V and VI. Won't play X-2(only did for like 30 minutes) and anything after that.

So far VII=IX>>>X>>>>VIII. I-III are too "traditional" to really rate.

Kinda surprised to see a lot of ppl prefering 9 over the others... To me it seemed the least fun i've had to play. Sure the combat's system wasn't bad, afterall it was refreshing, but still i prefer the 12's one (too bad it has so many useless gambits, if only they worked a little more on it, it'd have been a pretty good game tbh).

FF6 and FF9 are the only 2 that i've never bothered to finish because of boredom :/
Guess i'm getting too old for those games now...

well IX was mostly awesome because of it's nostalgic look and setting imo. The setting was just something different.
You were used to something futuristic around that time (VII, VIII and X probably as well?) so IX was something different in that regard. To me that was really the most important difference between those games. And yeah that's completly ignoring game mechanics and stuff.

But yeah it'd probably feel different if you play it as a grown man for the first time as it IS pretty childish compared to the other ones.

[...] loved 12, never played 13.

Two years ago for the first time I played and beat 7. Thought it was terrible. Not a bad game, just didn't come close to living up to all the hype I've been hearing for the last fifteen years.

[...]

And I have to say that I'm really enjoying the experience so far. There's a lot of charm in this game that I never noticed before. Earlier when I first played it, I was so turned off by the fact that the main character was some sort of monkey man. And he was like twelve or something. Ugh, I cannot stand children in the least, and role playing as one of them fills me with distaste. And the love interest between Zidane and Garnet seems immature to say the least.

However if I blank out the monkey man and his teen queen, then the rest of the game is actually quite enjoyable. I'm hooked on the story, I'm loving the "equip items to learn skills" aspect, and the supporting cast is, at least so far, really fleshed out.

In the past whenever a Final Fantasy thread popped up, it would inevitably lead to people posting stuff like X>Y>Z>>>>>>>>>>>>>>W.

Whenever someone slotted in FF9 in one of the left hand spots, I always laughed at them. I mean, come on, he's a damn monkey. Who was that monkey from Babar? Zephyr? That's who he reminds me of.

But now I can see why people enjoy this game. And so I apologize to all you monkey lovers out there.

Edit: As aforementioned it's Zidane, not Tidus.

Dudeeeeeeeee I so much understand you.

FF9 was actually the first I played, so quite naturally it got my spot "best FF game ever".

But damn at first playing with a monkey man...Then the story unfolds and holyshit.

I loved sooo much the story and the medieval world around. Each character's quest for himself was also very touching to me in fact.

Even now, when I am in holiday, I get my very old PSX out of the box, put my FF9 in it and starts the game all over.
I think i more or less did that 8 to 10 times, easily.

That's pretty much the same for FF12, even though i found the characters to have much more less personnality.

Ah, FFIX. Good memories. How far have you gotten so far, OP? Like another poster said, the "monkey thing" does get explained, and honestly, with all the other cutesy/cartoony/silly things in the game, it really kind of fits anyway. Well, in my opinion, at least. However, I must fault you for making me want to replay the game again ^_^

The soundtrack is another great addition to the game. You have such varied tracks like Vamo alla Flamenco, Esto Gaza, You're Not Alone!, Dark Messenger, and of course Song of Memories.
